  7. This week, we map the visual layer of the fediverse with current numbers (June 2026): Pixelfed, Loops, PeerTube, and ... Flickr?

Pixelfed: ~100K MAU across 700 servers. @dansup has been building it for eight years, mostly alone, turning down VC offers and funding it through a Kickstarter that raised CA$138K for a nonprofit foundation.

Meta started blocking links to Pixelfed in January 2025 which had the reverse effect - the flagship instance gained 200,000+ new accounts.

Loops: federated short-form video, also by dansup. mid-4,000s MAU, 26 servers. opt-in algorithmic feed (the default is chronological), trust-score moderation, no AI training on user content.

PeerTube: 47K MAU across 1,500+ servers. Framasoft (French nonprofit). the most infrastructure-heavy platform on the fediverse.

The visual web is the most expensive layer of the internet to decentralize. None of this was built on venture-scale economics.

Part 2 of the Fediverse Beyond Mastodon series. Part 3 will cover writing platforms: Ghost, WriteFreely, and micro.blog.

  8. Organize Your Fediverse Timeline — A Simple Method

Today I remembered my early days on the Fediverse, two years ago. After a period rich in discoveries and experiences, I’m sharing the method I use to organize my global timeline — aimed at those who sometimes feel a bit lost.

This method is straightforward and works across the various networks of the Fediverse.

First, once you’ve created your account, the very first thing to do — even before following lots of people — is to create lists.

I recommend starting with a list dedicated to the profiles you want to see consistently on your main timeline. In that list’s settings, enable the “do not hide from timeline” option, then add the profiles you want to appear directly in your feed.

Next, create other lists by theme (tech, art, monitoring, news, etc.). For these, choose the “hide from timeline” option. Add all new profiles to the list that matches their theme.

Once these lists are well stocked with quality content, you can integrate them into your main timeline gradually, one by one. Be sure to review each list’s settings and check “do not hide from global timeline” so the list’s content is correctly released into your global feed.

This way, you’ll have a clearer, more pleasant, and better-controlled timeline.

  14. Finally, it destroys the user experience. Interacting with ancient instances breaks modern features like quote posts, advanced formatting, and updated privacy controls. It creates a fragmented, buggy UX where users can't tell if a feature is broken or if they're just interacting with a digital ghost town. For the Fediverse to mature, it needs a baseline standard of quality — and that means setting an expiration date on obsolete software.

  17. IMO embedded activity doesn't make sense. It is not my activity, so even if I embed it, the recipient must ignore the value because it can not be trusted.

@silverpill @julian I think the value can be trusted because object.id (and object.actor and object.object) can be looked up by the instance that sent the Follow to confirm that it was valid.

Also thanks for pointing this out because I didn't implement handling Accept activities with object as a URI myself, and will do so.

  21. Our #mainstreaming problem. If you are wondering why I keep documenting the issues around the #ActivityPub #openweb reboot, this is why.

Next time, maybe we can learn. Maybe we can mediate our “libertarian cats” a bit better and get a less messy path. Because we cannot keep making the same mistakes over and over.

I have been through this mess more than five times over 20 years of working on #openweb use, outreach and community building. This is not theory. It is experience.

Decentralised spaces are messy by nature. That is part of their strength. But if we don’t learn from our failures, the same patterns keep returning. So at the very least:

Can we please fuck up differently this time?

    Document the lessons.

    Build the memory.

    Keep the commons alive.

    Mess.

28/6/26 To the artist who believes music can heal, unite, and spark change: your choice to step away from US Big Tech is powerful. By sharing your songs, stories, and show dates through the Fediverse, you are not just posting updates, you are building a Sovereign Creative Space where your voice belongs to you and your community, not to an algorithm or a corporation. 28. Next #ActivityPub question, this time about the delivery of activities:

Let's say a user on my server sends a post. I have a list of the user's followers.
    Do I…

    a) … webfinger each follower, then request the user, then deliver the activity to the inbox
    b) … directly request the user (i.e. I remember the URL rather than the handle), then deliver the activity to the inbox
    c) … directly deliver to the inbox (i.e. I don't care about the users, I only store the inboxes) without re-requesting the user profile

  30. @maxleibman I think your point about competing for follows is interesting. I don't think it's usually the direction things work, though. People usually follow topics they are interested in, via hashtag feeds, *then* follow people they found from that hashtag.

If people do decide to follow a hashtag rather than a person, though, that seems like it's OK? If someone decided they wanted to follow #ActivityPub instead of following me, for whatever reason, that seems like it's up to them.

  35. Pls boost: UPDATE 28/06/2026

$32 of $250 for meds and food for this month. $218 still needed. My birthday is on Tuesday, btw :’D Can you help with my meds? That $32 was already gone for food and basic necessities. I haven’t made it to a doctor in months, and the meds are what’s most urgent right now.

July is already waiting: $375 essentials, $225 building maintenance fee. $600 minimum in total.

Monthly pledges sustain me and my work the most, due to my disability. One-off support works too. Boosting this is also support.

I understand we’re all struggling here, and I’m simply adding my own survival request to the mix. Please know I will still share weekly roundup mutual aid requests and continue the mutual aid infrastructure project regardless. Solidarity and survival aren’t transactional. Take care and stay safe out there.

  37. I need someone who knows #ActivityPub to clear up something for me.
    - If I follow a single account on an instance, it federates to my instance so that searching for content on my instance includes the instance of the followed account, including posts by accounts I don't follow, yes/no?
    - if an account on a federated instance I don't follow reposts a post containing a hashtag, I can find that post via hashtag search even if the original instance is not (yet) federated, yes/no?

  39. @teohhanhui I've been playing with #activitypub ideas in codeberg.org/cmars/medina recently (very incomplete and slightly incoherent rough sketch). I had this idea of a hub or relay where the identities are moderated but the clients own their keys and data in a portable #sqlite db which could be hosted by an instance or relayed. Exploring that balance between moderation and autonomy. I'm also testing some of these ideas with #veilid in another project that I haven't shared yet.

Looks like you're using #iroh which I haven't tried yet. It's hard for me to commit to side-projects right now, but very interested to see how your project goes!
