My next stop was in Windsor. On the radio, the hourly CBC news announced that the border was closed as were all the roads leading into Windsor. I turned around and headed home, amazed by the 60 km long line of transport trucks that lead to the border along the 401.

25 years ago today I was driving to two site visits to inspect the safety of customer machines. My first stop was the Ford plant in Chatham, ON (now closed). While doing the inspection I passed a glassed in break room on the shop floor. Inside, a tv was playing CNN. On the screen the first tower was burning. Around me, crews who had been installing equipment were downing tools and leaving.

D. H. Lawrence, English novelist, poet, playwright, and critic was born on this day in 1885.
Lawrence was infamous for championing sexuality. Four of his most famous novels: Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928) were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of romance, sexuality, and use of explicit language.
The most infamous of these trials, The Lady Chatterley Trial occurred when the unexpurgated edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover was published by Penguin Books in Britain in 1960.
The trial of Penguin under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959 became a major public event and a test of the new obscenity law.
The 1959 act made it possible for publishers to escape conviction if they could show that a work was of literary merit. One of the objections was to the frequent use of the word "fuck" and its derivatives and the word "cunt."
The verdict, delivered on 2 November 1960, was "not guilty," resulting in a far greater degree of freedom for the publication of explicit material in the UK.The prosecution was ridiculed for being out of touch with changing social norms when the chief prosecutor, Mervyn Griffith-Jones, asked if it were the kind of book "you would wish your wife or servants to read."

Diana Rigg, British actress, died on this day in 2020.
She was one of the iconic figures of the 1960s along with the Beatles, Bobby Moore, and Sean Connery.
Her role as the secret agent Emma Peel in The Avengers on ITV looking magnetically sexy in trademark black leather jumpsuit, was truly a sign of the times. Rigg’s breakthrough TV role as Mrs. Peel left her shocked at becoming a sex symbol overnight.
