The leader of the first was killed during the time of President Obama.
The leader of the second is now "president". -

CW: coup in Chile
Today in 1973 a terrorist organization by the name of CIA supported a coup in Chile that overthrew and murdered the democratically elected President Salvador Allende and replaced him with the fascist dictator Pinochet who continued to murder lot’s of people.
28 years later the US got a tiny fraction of what they deserved and can’t stop whining about it.
Never forget that the date in Chile is more important and worse!

Heute vor 25 Jahren. Eine lange Zugfahrt, in der wir wenig mitkriegten. Dann plötzlich Nachrichten. Und am Abend ein denkwürdiges Konzert.
Und ich als 20jährige mit meinem 17jährigen Bruder alleine in Berlin und der Frage, was jetzt mit der Welt passiert.
Diese 2 kleinen Stücke Papier rufen auch weiterhin starke Gefühle hervor.

25 years ago today, I was driving up I-85 from Athens, GA to here (Durham, NC) with @Harena. She was using palm.net to check up on relatives in the NYC area (everyone was fine).
We kept hearing (on the radio? later? not sure) about how people couldn't get through to their friends and relatives because the phone exchanges were jammed, but email was working fine on our Palm VIIx PDAs.
So that was... cool?

Twenty-five years ago today I got to work late. JPL's enormous East (parking) Lot, normally full to bursting at that time, was completely empty, and indeed the gate at the top of the hill was closed. Never seen that before. I got out of my car and asked the guard what was going on.
He looked at me. "Turn on your radio," he said. I did. And that's when I found out.

I remember two American war declarations clearly. The Gulf War/Desert Storm with GHW Bush... I was sitting in front of the little TV in our basement rec room watching him…January 1991
and the day GW Bush invoked Article 5 and declared war on Afghanistan.
I was again, sitting in front of a TV, the only time I went to the home of the parents of my girlfriend at the time.
I remember that day in 2001 thinking, wondering whether it was the right thing to do.
It was right for Canada to abide by the NATO treaty. But the subsequent 13 years and hundreds of dead Canadians, for what is now, the same Afghanistan as before, if not worse, makes it clear following blind rage does not solve anything.

Here is a story about the response in Vancouver at YVR.
It was the same at Gander, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax (not sure if there other Canadian airports that turned into refuges)

Having now finished Brain of the Firm, I’m extra saddened with the fall of the Allende government, today in 1973.
Incredible things were achieved in project Cybersyn, with extremely limited means, only to be destroyed by the Pinochet junta.

around this time 25 years ago I was in an IRC chat and people were talking about something that had happened in New York.
The rest of the day is a blur.
Our world really did change that day, and not for the better.
War, racism, and bigotry sprouted from that day like never before in my life and it continues now. We really never recovered as a global society, mainly due to the way politicians used that day to justify actions that had nothing at all to do with Osama Bin Laden while leaving the root causes that gave rise to terrorists willing to murder thousands to fester and grow.
The only positive of that day was the humanity that came together to embrace the USA in its time of shock, grief and mourning. Nearly every country in the world, including Russia and Iran, stood in silence and mourning with the relatives of those killed and the USA itself.
It's that humanity and unity that I'll remember today and celebrate. The other stuff, the world and society destroying stuff, I'll keep doing my best to fight against.

Ich erinnere mich gut an den Abend in einer griechischen Kneipe, die Fernseher waren an u wir wunderten uns, dass ein SiFi-Horrorfilm gezeigt wird .. bis wir verstanden, dass es real war.Heute ein glasklarer Artikel vom Historiker Timothy Snyder in der Sz. Sehr lesenswert, wie er die Zusammenhänge zw damals und heute herstellt - erschreckend. Wir dürfen nicht nur gedenken, sondern auch verstehen.

My next stop was in Windsor. On the radio, the hourly CBC news announced that the border was closed as were all the roads leading into Windsor. I turned around and headed home, amazed by the 60 km long line of transport trucks that lead to the border along the 401.
The world was changing all around in dizzying ways.

25 years ago today I was driving to two site visits to inspect the safety of customer machines. My first stop was the Ford plant in Chatham, ON (now closed). While doing the inspection I passed a glassed in break room on the shop floor. Inside, a tv was playing CNN. On the screen the first tower was burning. Around me, crews who had been installing equipment were downing tools and leaving.

Heute vor 25 Jahren. #Nineeleven . Schon wieder so lange her! Einer der Tage, von dem jeder wahrscheinlich sagen kann, was er damals gemacht hat, wo er damals war. Ich war damals im Büro, wir starrten auf die Bildschirme. Unvorstellbar, was wir da sahen.Als wir nach Hause kamen, sagte unser Sohn " der zweite Turm ist gerade eingestürzt ". Ein Jahr vorher waren wir noch in New York und auch in einem der Türme auf der Aussichtsplattform gewesen.....
