Durante la invasión a Dinamarca en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los oficiales alemanes tenían la orden estricta de confiscar cualquier pieza de valor, incluyendo las medallas de oro del Premio Nobel que los físicos Max von Laue y James Franck habían mandado a guardar en el laboratorio de Niels Bohr. Sacar los pesados discos metálicos del país era imposible porque los fusilarían al instante por traición, así que al químico George de Hevesy se le ocurrió una idea brillante para salvar los galardones sin levantar ninguna sospecha.
Hevesy agarró un frasco de agua regia, una mezcla muy potente de ácido nítrico y ácido clorhídrico inventada en el siglo 8 por el alquimista Jabir ibn Al-Hayyan, y metió las medallas adentro. Ninguno de estos dos ácidos puede hacerle cosquillas al oro si trabajan por separado, pero cuando se juntan, el nítrico rompe la capa exterior del metal mientras el clorhídrico atrapa los pedacitos invisibles, logrando que el material sólido desaparezca por completo en un líquido de color naranja brillante. La Gestapo registró el laboratorio buscando los tesoros de los físicos, pero ignoraron por completo una botella polvorienta llena de líquido ámbar que estuvo guardada a la vista de todos en un estante hasta que terminó la guerra, momento en que los científicos recuperaron el oro del fondo del frasco para volver a fundir las medallas originales.

🧵 … attempt number unknown and I got #macOS #Sequoia installed on that M2 #MacBook Air. I don't know exactly why it worked in the end. I re-formatted the volume a couple of times, unmounted it, restarted the machine, tried again and again and at some point it worked.
Coming from #KDE / #Linux, macOS is so hard to use… why can't I have two-finger-tap *and* bottom-right click as right mouse button? Why is it either / or?
On Linux, I can even have three-finger-tap as middle mouse button and I am using this all the time to open links in new tabs.
It's feels like macOS has cut off 3 fingers of my hand.
But anyways… I am one of the few solo entrepreneurs who keeps software package files in a NextCloud repo so that I can install exactly the right versions again on new machines.
Which is essential, because installing recent versions of remote controls to event tech hardware might trigger a chain of updates in outboard gear, and updates might bring failures, and this eventually might stop an entire live show…

🧵 … so I decided to trash #macOS #GoldenGate on that #MacBook Air M2 I bought used. I want to install #Sequoia, since this is the last version with a #Firewire stack to run my #RME #Fireface400.
Of course, this is a dead end. Sequioa is old, and sooner or later it will not run recent software any more. But actually I don' even need recent software. I just need to record with some old Ardour, run TotalMix, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Dante Controller, and QLab.
But be it as it may… it is not what users are supposed to do with their #Apple computer.
Users are supposed to spend another 1200€ for a recent RME audio interface, and then get like 300€ for a high end recording project, that involves microphones worth 3000€. A business that is rotten.
Second attempt at installing Sequoia. First one failed with the reason that it just failed somehow. Now failing again. I can recover Golden Gate or throw the Mac into the bin?!
I wish macOS was as easy to install as Ubuntu Linux is.
