Bought an #SSD Upgrade to the #Powerbook G4 12" 1.5GHz
- chenyang mSATA Mini SATA SSD to IDE 44Pin
- Transcend MSA230 128GB mSATA SSDOpening up this computer takes some commitment. And while I was in there I also lubricated the CPU fan to fix some noise. Then booted the computer from an external #Firewire disk and restored the #Sorbert Leopard image.

So so weird! Using #dvgrab to capture footage from old DV video tapes and all seems to be going well. But using the dv2 format I get clips where audio is sped up with several clips. So I tried dv1, seemed fine, but #FinalCutPro doesn't take these files. Neither does the mov format. So I tried the raw format and that worked fine. But now there's one clip where audio is pitched down by more than 2 steps. So weird!

🔥🎩 "FireWire on Pi: The Epic Saga" 🎩🔥— A tale of clinging to obsolete tech like a toddler to a security blanket, when all modern solutions have moved on. Why wrestle with a Raspberry Pi to revive a relic when even Linux is on its way to ditching that old friend by 2029? 🤔🚀

Okay #hardware #nerd types and #DataHoarders or #DigitalArchivists...
I'm using #Ubuntu #Linux on an old #iMac with #dvgrab to download the exact copies of all my #MiniDV tapes in #DV format.
But I have to say... This thing is a monster.
Can anyone recommend a laptop with #Firewire 800 that also runs Linux well?

Nice! I was able to use #dvgrab with my #FireWire card and #DV #camera without any configuration on #Fedora #Linux. I won't be sticking to it because of the short term support, but happy to know that part of my old PC will work just fine under Linux!
Thinking about going with #AlmaLinux instead because of the longer support cycle. That or #ZorinOS.

Good grief #FireWire is finicky! Not sure if it's actually the #miniDV #Camera being troublesome or just the FireWire interface on #MacOS. I takes several reconnects and reboots (of both camera and computer) for the camera to be properly recognised by the OS.
And even during import I've already had a data connection loss. The FireWire cable is brand new, but the Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 2 -> FireWire adapters aren't. So...

FireWire was such an amazing bus technology. I often wonder what could have been, if it had won out over the vastly inferior at the time USB standard.
I guess today we have Thunderbolt as its spiritual successor, enabling a lot of what it offered, and then some. But I still miss #firewire

@amadeus @itsfoss since I became a #bitwig user in the early pre-release days, I have tried twice to switch from mac OS to #Ubuntu. But I eventually relapsed both times since it felt I was spending more time troubleshooting than making music. But being forced to ditch 1000€ worth of perfectly working hardware (#MOTU 828 mk2, #UAD appolo quad...) because of "dropped #Firewire support" makes me absolutely mad. I'd love to get some tips from someone who went through this process successfully.
