  6. So so weird! Using to capture footage from old DV video tapes and all seems to be going well. But using the dv2 format I get clips where audio is sped up with several clips. So I tried dv1, seemed fine, but doesn't take these files. Neither does the mov format. So I tried the raw format and that worked fine. But now there's one clip where audio is pitched down by more than 2 steps. So weird!

  11. Guess what? Updated to #MacOS #Tahoe this morning and now my RME Fireface 800 can go to the trash, because #Apple silently dropped #Firewire support 😒 . That really is planned obsolescence at its best, and I would have expected at least a warning before the upgrade, or a long term support option for latest XCode/iOS SDKs on legacy OS versions.

Can anyone recommend a laptop with #Firewire 800 that also runs Linux well?

  30. Nice! I was able to use with my card and without any configuration on . I won't be sticking to it because of the short term support, but happy to know that part of my old PC will work just fine under Linux!

Thinking about going with instead because of the longer support cycle. That or .

  31. Thinking about repurposing my old . It’s an i7-3770 with 32GB of DDR3 800 MHz RAM (though CPU-Z reports 672.5 MHz?). Intel HD graphics 4000, my GTX 950 died. Currently running but should wipe it and run a distro. Oh, it has a card for DV capture. It’s important that keeps functioning.

I wonder if adding a “new” dedicated GPU would still be worth it?

It also doesn’t help I don’t know yet what to do with it. I have my for video, photo and music…

FireWire was such an amazing bus technology. I often wonder what could have been, if it had won out over the vastly inferior at the time USB standard.

I guess today we have Thunderbolt as its spiritual successor, enabling a lot of what it offered, and then some. But I still miss #firewire

  33. @amadeus @itsfoss since I became a #bitwig user in the early pre-release days, I have tried twice to switch from mac OS to #Ubuntu. But I eventually relapsed both times since it felt I was spending more time troubleshooting than making music. But being forced to ditch 1000€ worth of perfectly working hardware (#MOTU 828 mk2, #UAD appolo quad...) because of "dropped #Firewire support" makes me absolutely mad. I'd love to get some tips from someone who went through this process successfully.

  34. Good grief is finicky! Not sure if it's actually the being troublesome or just the FireWire interface on . I takes several reconnects and reboots (of both camera and computer) for the camera to be properly recognised by the OS.

And even during import I've already had a data connection loss. The FireWire cable is brand new, but the Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 2 -> FireWire adapters aren't. So...

  37. Reminder that #USB is, and always was, a bad design; as usual for Intel. We had #Firewire, a true bus, and not the worst option of many, polling, like USB. We could have had everything USB-C offers now -- reversible plugs, power-negotiation, multi-protocol -- with Firewire decades ago if USB hadn't taken over. Firewire even had Ethernet-over-Firewire, at 400MBps, fifteen years before Thunderbolt would do the same.

Firewire didn't need a different plug for the computer-side and for the device-side (USB-A & USB-B) because it was a true bus. You could hook any two devices together via a normal Firewire cable and you'd get instant two-way communication. This is how the PS2 did link-play. USB pushed the workload on to the computer. USB-C solves the "who is the host and who is the client?" problem by putting a tiny *computer* into the cable, that's how insane USB has become.

Firewire has been gone so long now that most #Apple #Mac users probably don't even know that you could plug a Mac into another computer via Firewire, power it on holding T and the internal disk drive would appear *as an external HDD* to the other computer.

  38. I remembered I may have some files on an old hard drive and was presented with these lovely connection options.

Amazingly I still have the #firewire 800-to-400 cable but the only computer I can plug it into (2009 MacBook) has a dud battery.

So now I need to buy either some kind of FW adapter or mini-USB to USB-C cable.

I never looked into the sata option, anyone know what that is?
