A year ago, I built a gaming PC (that doubles as a pytorch experiment runner) and I wanted to do things correctly and I had some pocket change, so I activated Windows 11 Pro through the Microsoft Store knowing very well I could have used an activation script.
Today, I upgraded my motherboard. Windows failed to link the digital key to the new hardware, and there was nothing I could do. So I contacted support.
The support worker is kind and follows a protocol. He checks the registry, makes sure everything is in order, checks my order history to verify that I did in fact pay for windows. Then I never would have guessed what comes next.
He opens powershell. Types a line in that I know much too well.

Windows support used a hack to circumvent a bug in Windows, the same hack that I avoided by paying for Windows. I'm not sure what to feel about this, just thought I'd share.
