  2. New blog post: “AI” status games

In his book “The Status Game: On Human Life and How to Play It”, Will Storr uses the idea that humans crave status to explain many facets of human behavior. The book was written before the rise of LLMs and “AI”, otherwise I'm sure it would have had something to say about it. This post is an attempt to examine the “AI” phenomenon through the lens of status games.

  3. @lucas_brouwers @wsslmn @hans Mega interessante link Lucas. Mijn gedachten gaan allerlei kanten op, vooral mbt digitale identiteit.
Ik vis er drie boeiende passages uit:

    - An American news executive put the dilemma precisely on the tour: What do you do with a paying subscriber who sends an agent to fetch the day’s top stories? Nobody on the tour — not Reddit, which blocks 22 million attempts on its front door a day, not the companies that route the Web’s traffic — had a way yet to give an agent limited, temporary permission.

    - One observation from the study tour’s debrief stayed with me. Participants felt the reader was missing from much of the week’s conversation, and several worried that the technology companies already understand publishers’ audiences better than publishers do. The group’s own corrective was to know your readers better than the platforms do, and to remember that people who pay for news have always been a small share of the population — and that is enough. As one U.S. local publisher put it, nobody subscribes to learn what the mayor said at a press conference. They pay for the backstory that comes from knowing the mayor.

    - Every host that was thriving pointed to direct relationships, and so did the conference. Substack’s Hamish McKenzie, interviewed by Kerstin Hasse, argued that the media economy has been rewritten by creators and that the next phase is networks of niche publications under a looser definition of who belongs to a brand. His sharpest line: In the age of agentic AI, “the e-mail list is the best insurance for the direct relationships that you could possibly have.”

  12. #Google's moronic #AI just declared that there was a "480 person" piano in the wonderful fantasy film (of which I have many stories to tell) "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T" (1953). This despite the fact that Dr. T (Hans Conried) repeatedly speaks of having 500 boys playing his piano and the film is literally named "5000 Fingers" -- not "4800 Fingers". Jeez.

  13. The future of AI? (2) The older you are …

What is for sure is that AI has a future – it’s among the technologies that will stay for a long time, and dominate an era, or more than just one. Humankind won’t do away with it. And that can be a scary prospect. In a scenario described by "The Economist" in its May 16th edition,

Eventually humans could, like horses in the age of the car, become uneconomical. Income may go mostly or entirely to owners of capital, who then go on to spend it on things that are made by AI and robots using natural resources that they monopolise.

Scenarios elsewhere suggest that AI may do away with all of humankind, capitalists and workers alike.

My current experience with AI is that it is extremely useful. Read here how AI can work for a shortwave listener who listens to programs in languages he doesn’t know himself.

But there are drawbacks. Tibetan isn’t so readable, because there isn’t enough data for bots to learn from. The same may be true for other languages, be it because their use becomes restricted by nationalist governments, be it because parents put an emphasis on more "useful" languages than those they themselve speak as their native one. Besides workers, AI may also throw languages and national identities under the bus.

When the internet became widely used, it raised hopes that it could become empowering. That was before "Facebook", "X" and other platforms of their kind swamped the new medium. Many decades earlier, in the late 1920s, German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s radio theory tried to take stock of the – then brand-new – medium’s potential: instead of broadcasting stale banalities, radio should be "transformed from a distributive into a communication device" (Der Rundfunk ist aus einem Distributionsapparat in einen Kommunikationsapparat zu verwandeln). A few years later, radio became Goebbels’ distributive device. It was a fast negation of the medium’s positive potential.

Thirty-five years after the end of Nazi rule, in 1970, Hans-Magnus Enzensberger built on Brecht’s theories, in his media construction kit. Having seen the use of the medium by the Nazis, he didn’t just see an either positive or a trivial effect of the media, but restrictive and liberating elements alike. Their effect as means of production depended, not least, on the forms of ownership. Capitalists, or the masses?

Your age could play a role, too, when you try to assess the use or the risks of AI. It’s understandable when young people fear AI, even while making use of it themselves. Older people may be more playful. Wang Meng, a Chinese author and former party official born in 1934, certainly is.

    Help yourself to a translation!
