  1. From the wrap up [my comments in square brackets]: “The TGA [Therapeutic Goods Administration - surely one of our least agile/active regulators] has spent the last year reviewing AI scribes… its findings will be released [soon], and any breaches [apparently some of the 12 or so in use may be in breach of the law] will be acted upon.

“Chief executive of Patients Australia Lisa Robins believed all scribes should be regulated, as summarising a patient still involved decision-making by AI.

“Dr Stevens [RACGP's Digital Health & Innovation chair & advisor for one of the biggest AI scribes - potential conflict of interest?] had concerns that extending regulation would only stifle future innovation. [never heard that one before /s]

“… DRW [Digital Rights Watch, they did a report] is calling on the newly established AI Safety Institute to test AI scribes and publish a list of approved tools… similar to New Zealand's approach, where the national AI advisory group reviewed tools and last year gave approval for clinicians to use two AI tools: Heidi Health and iMed.

“Ms Deveny [Chief Executive, Consumers Health Forum of Australia, which recommends asking a no. of questions about your doc’s use of AI that could potentially take up all your appointment time] said ensuring doctors were using AI safely could also be enforced in other ways, such as compulsory checks and balances built into the software, or during practice accreditation… every three years.”

What did the patient say in the end?: “Ms Green said her trust in AI has been splintered by what happened and now would only give consent for AI if she had an established relationship with the doctor.

“"I love AI … but the essential ingredient is the human. At the end of the day what's happened here is more about the lack of human involvement," she said.”

  3. I'm done using AI - Brett Codes

(…) I was able to essentially connect Linear to Claude Code and have it build out a non-trivial project from start to finish without me editing a line of code. The work got done faster than I could have done on my own. And I barely had to think. While that sounds amazing if you're a person who profits from more work getting done, there are immense drawbacks to this, which I'll share more about in a moment. I share this anecdote to say: I understand what the LLM-based coding harnesses are capable of. I write this all from the perspective of an experienced lead engineer who used these tools in earnest for more than a year. And I cannot in good conscious continue to use AI for coding (or anything else) any longer. (…)brettcodes.com

I do not like this world where people are using AI to generate art, music, writing, and software. So I will not use AI.
    This.

    Excellent question. 🤔
Reading through Deutsche Welles’ coverage of the rivers running dry (Rhine, Danube, etc) and local consequences (barges only a quarter loaded & cost implications for various industries, nuclear power stations reducing generation because not enough water or water temperature too high, etc) there’s a lot on local short term mitigation but little mention of action on the longer term beyond motherhood statements (like need to reduce fossil fuel burning). It’s very disappointing. ☹️

“Dieter De Cleene is a science journalist at De Morgen. While the contrast between the rising climate bill and the towering profits of the cause of the problem is getting worse, the bill essentially falls to those who are least responsible. Such a BIG central idea & true that it’s not being picked up in this context. Yes, the need for reform, then the bigger questions: how, to what, with what, and all the rest of it. Mature political discourse & debate in safe ways for everyone. I long for it - maybe we all do, each at our own level. Thanks for sharing your observations & initiating!

Excellent! Count Binface is really giving it a good run. Makes a good point that while many of those - misled by the lies - who voted for Brexit are “statistically dead”, it’s the young who are & will be wearing the consequences. Glad his team won the debate. 😀🙏🏻

  19. MANAGING SYMPTOMS.
    NOT SEEKING #ENLIGHTENMENT

People sometimes mistake me for someone spiritual. I am not. I am practical.

I #breathe consciously because it hurts when I do not. I fast because it hurts when I am too heavy. I walk because the body needs #movement I meditate because disorder is painful. I pay attention because not paying #attention has #consequences

    That is all.

There is no halo around any of it.

For years, I have lived with the aftermath of a major stroke, hemiplegia, weight, discomfort, and all the indignities that come with a damaged body. None of it was beautiful. None of it was noble. It was simply what had happened.

After enough years of suffering, I began to see that the body was giving me facts.

Breathe. Move. Rest. Eat less. Get up. Walk. Pay attention. Do the next thing.

    That is the whole system.

The body is not asking for #philosophy. It is asking for #breakfast. Then breathwork. Then a #walk. Then rest. Then perhaps irritation. Then perhaps #laughter Then the next thing.

    And the next.

    And the next.

It is not unlike ChatGPT. There is no little person inside either of us running around with a clipboard. There is just the next movement, the next word, the next breath, the next necessity.

For most of my life, I made all of this into a problem. I had fantasies about death, ideas about enlightenment, thoughts about escape. I believed I had to understand everything.

Now I see something much simpler.

There is only life while it is being lived. There is waking. There is sleeping. There is waking again. And one day, there will simply be a last time I go to sleep.

I cannot experience death. I can only experience life.

So death has lost its reality for me.

Not because A Course in Miracles tells me there is no death. Not because I believe a doctrine. Because when I look directly, death is never here.

    Life is here.

    Breathing is here.

The body is here, demanding #attention again.

    Probably lunch.

Nothing matters in the way I once thought things mattered. And yes, I will still get irritated. I will still get pissed off. Someone will say something stupid. Technology will fail. The body will complain.

    But irritation passes.

    The weather passes.

    The #body passes.

    The next thing appears.

    And I do that.

No freak out. No spiritual drama. No need to become anyone.

    Just the next thing.

Yes. If there are no consequences, why bother?

Even if Telstra are fined, say, what does that do? Just makes the sloppy poor service more expensive for those forced to use it.

Frightening. 🙀 Two smart people very much taken in & manipulated & not in a good way. Nothing in common except maybe loneliness; & the first guy’s cat died (sounded like he had no one to talk to about his feelings about that; quite common in our society - no one wants to know about your grief, few have mastered the art of just listening & letting you be sad… gross overstatement, but covers some truth). 😿

Elon Musk’s X or whatever bit of his empire runs the Grok version of ‘AI LLM agentic thing pretending to be nearly a person’ never responded to enquiries (in their rude & usual arrogance). 😡

The researcher & reporter ask what are the harms with more subtle cases? 🤔 Feel like we all want to know that… are we in mind control experiments if we use these things… 🤔
It could be nice to have some reassurances. 😮

  25. On the recent Telstra outage, looks like there are/will be few if any consequences. ABC reports:
“The Telstra incident has led to further questions about what more the government could do to protect customers from future outages.

“Senator Hanson-Young said tougher regulations were needed.

“"There's no right to compensation for customers or penalties on the companies for failed mobile phone service," she said.

“"We need stronger laws, stronger enforcement and stronger penalties."”

“Every new heat record is another reminder that burning coal, oil and gas has consequences.” What a shame a lot of politicians won’t be around to be affected by the inevitable consequences. Same with certain classes of shareholders, dominated by wealthy but elderly people. Wonder what the under-represented young think about all this? 🤔

Great stories! Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻
Imagine if we did this today: “(And in a very Ancient Chinese approach, he was allowed to live but most of his attendants were executed for allowing him to grow into such a brat. Only a handful who were known to have boldly rebuked him were spared.)” Of course I’m thinking of the US & current incumbent 47.
