New House Projects – Weather Watching V0.5
I've always been fascinated with the weather. I can still remember the daily routine of charting the weather in kindergarten with meticulous scientific rigor: Each morning one pupil, on a rotation, would peer out a window and then mark down if it was sunny, or cloudy, or possibly raining...

New House Projects – Network 2.0
Ok - So, take one of this project didn't go as planned. I don't regret the choices I made, and while I'm very happy with how everything is working today. it's not the setup I had hoped for. So, where did I end up?
Firstly - I ended up ordering a firewall from Protectli, the VP2420, which I ordered with Coreboot BIOS. Performance has been great, it was easy to setup, and the

But then why didn't the memory compression make it usable with 4GB?
It's like it just decided one day that 4GB wasn't enough and started running like molasses (this is accessed via VNC, so swapping is doubly harmful).
I replaced the 2x2GB sticks with 2x4GB, and everything is way more than "right as rain."I gotta learn #GnuCash quickly so I can get off of this benighted software. This is my only PC and I only use it for #QuickBooks Pro Desktop (I will not use their cloud "solution").

New House Projects – Network Planning and Setup
We're in the process of moving from our apartment to a house to call our own. It will be somewhere I can drill holes, make improvements, and really nerd-out. The new spot has, if you can believe it, access to symmetric 2 Gigabit internet service for under $100/month. Ordering a service at this speed is unnecessary for me, as it is for most people, and actually is likely t

Books Read: 2022
Having forgotten to make this post at the end of 2022, this post is a little tardy. But, I organize my reading into year based 'Collections' on my Kindle, so knowing what was read isn't too hard to figure out. Figuring our the order in which I read them proving a stiffer challenge!
I started the year with a couple of books on time, and historical time keeping. Firstly, I read 'Longitude: The True Story of

Books Read: 2023
(I'll try to get my 2021, and 2022 posts up soon too.. totally forgot to write them!)
Firstly, my reading has really declined this year! Though I continue to work from home, I have struggled this year to find gaps to do much reading. I do most of my reading during lunch, or in little pockets throughout the day. This year however, I did not do a good job of actually taking a lunch at work. Something to be a

I had a disk fail in a #ZFS mirror. I removed the bad disk from the pool, and then swapped in a new drive.
(For reasons, I didn't just swap the disk and use a replace command)
I then, mistakenly, used the 'add' command which made a stripe, not a mirror.
Ugh.
With solid backups in place, I threw caution to the wind and tried to 'remove' the 2nd disk.
Took a while, but ZFS moved the data to the other disk and then I was able to add (attach...) it correctly and remake the mirror.

I've just passed my AZ-900 Azure Fundemtnals test. I've been in IT for 15+ years and have just never been a certification guy. Fun to get one, however basic it is. I've now accumulated some useless internet points!

Installed Fedora 37, using UTM, on my Mac. Excellent to see how easy that was, and how many packages are just ready.
MATE Desktop installed. Reboot. Easy.
This can only mean one thing: I have no option but to upgrade my Fedora 35 server. I love to see another great release, but it always makes me wonder if I really am crazy for using Fedora as my bare metal server OS. Time to do some ZFS installation testing!
-
And, to complete the world's most boring thread... Fedora 37 is now installed and everything looks great. MATE is there. All my apps are there. VMs look great. ZFS is working. Samba is up.
I update my workstations in step with current, but was, for some reason, more nervous about my server. Painless.
Thanks to everyone who gave me the 'ol internet thumbs up!

Question for the room:
I have a server running Fedora 35. Safe to go from 35 right to 37? Should I step through 36? Should I just wipe and reload?
I'm 100% prepared to do a clean install, just wondering if this is easier, or possibly more fun 😅
It's for my homelab, so it's not exactly mission critical.

Wow! I didn’t think they’d do it, but TC Electronic has updated their ‘Icon’ series of audio plugins to be compatible with Apple’s M series processors.
The plugins themselves are great standalone, but having the little desktop controller makes it easy to get ‘hands on’ and make tweaks based on the sound and not the visual on screen. Plus, I’ve found them to be a great teaching aid for people just getting into mixing.

It's too bad that an SSD failed in my server. But, thanks to #ZFS and #sanoid, I am not concerned. The pool is redundant, and it syncs to two separate offsite systems every 30 minutes.
For good measure, I'm now also sync'ing to a different array in the same server.
The 2nd disk in the mirror shows no signs of trouble, but if it also decides it's had enough I'm confident downtime will be minimal.
-
I have a 32TB #ZFS 'RAID10' array with a sad disk. I really only need ~20% of that space, so I pulled the bad disk, and added a new drive to the system.
I created a single disk pool and used #syncoid to send the data over from old to new. I then exported both, re-imported the new single-disk pool, changing it's name to match the 'old' pool.
Rebooted. Worked great. The system didn't miss a beat.
Adding a mirror.
And .. welp .. that is a LOT of checksum errors.
The best laid plans...

@jerzone This is totally the stuff I would nerd out on! Great line of thinking!
For me a smart home isn’t yelling at a voice assistant to turn on a light… That’s a voice activated switch.
It’s when the system can look at all the data I feed into it and make choices and changes based on my preferances.
Extremely geeky these days, but as with all this tech stuff, it’ll get easier and more accessible over time. #ToTheFuture

Today’s office. Congratulations to a wonderful couple and two great families.
Tail end of a wedding gig. It’s not easy money, but it is a lot of fun.

@jerzone @hikingdude I can’t wait to see all the new bike paths this funds…

The ability to follow a hashtag on Mastodon is so excellent.
This is, by far, the easiest way for me to find 'my people' within the fediverse.
I am a very happy Olympus and OM Digital Solutions user and it's been great to find so many others within the same system!

It’s #Amtrak day for me. We're zipping up the Northeast Corridor on the #Acela today, as the last leg of our 8 day trip around the US visiting family.
Of the three possible First class menus we lucked into geting the options we most wanted. Creme Brulee french toast was great this AM, and I'm looking forward to Lasagna later.
Great high speed link north from Washington, DC, avoiding any rough air from tropical storm #Ophelia, and then we’ll ease into town this evening on the #Downeaster.

Nice, relaxing trip back to New Hampshire from Boston on Amtrak’s Downeaster. The train is pretty full, which is great to see. And, as always, the staff is excellent.
We may not be doing Acela speed anymore, but the seats are still nice and we have plenty of space to relax. Neat to see the food options on this route, which are a bit nicer than other similar routes.

My wife and I like to buy a calendar each year from a photographer who's work we like. 2022 is drawing to a close and it's time to order for 2023.
Any reccomendations?
We've had a beautiful calender from Mortem Hilmer this year, and may just order the new one.

I can’t believe how inexpensive the Digidesign or AVID PRE units can be scooped up these days. 8 channels of great, clean, gain recallable and controlable from within Pro Tools for … ~$250? Yes, please!
I have a ‘blue face’ one already, and a ‘gray face’ one heading my way. I suspect they are litterally identical, but I’ll be cracking them open to compare.

On board Acela again this AM, heading back to Boston from Washington DC. We’re looking forward to getting underway and our hot breakfast being served.
We’re a little bit disappointed that the menu is the same as Thursday. The food was awesome, and I’m sure it will be again, but we’d have loved to try a few different today. Luck of the draw. We’ll just have to ride again!

Another great, full day in DC yesterday. We did some kite flying, checked out an excellent exhibit on Photography at the Library of Congress, saw an Orchid exhibit at the Botanical Gardens and even stood atop the National Mall.
It’s been a great trip, but I am very much looking forward to a restful journey home!#travelusa #travel #WashingtonDC

We had an excellent time last night seeing #MattNathanson at #TheMusicHall in #PortsmouthNH. Matt, and the opening act #StephenKellogg, were excellent.
The night was cold, but the crowd was warm and they were both having a great time telling stories and jokes between songs.
