So Quickbooks Online decided unilaterally to "upgrade" our Shopify integration—without telling us, much less asking for our permission—with something that requires our bookkeeper to manually assign the destination account and create a sales receipt entry for every single transaction, adding an hour or more of manual work per day. The previous integration did this all automatically.

Shopify gets worse and worse with every passing month.

Today I got an email notification that "A more powerful QuickBooks has arrived", noting that I'll start seeing major changes and "enhancements" rolling out in the coming weeks.

I don't want any of this. I had software that worked as I wanted and did what I needed. These SAAS providers need to find a way to make evolutionary changes opt-in rather than forced. I don't need a new learning curve to add to my workload.

Not what I paid for.

The whole renaissance of software development with AI and wonderful modern tools is going well. #quickbooks #intuit package has a "digital assistant" button on the top right hand corner. That pulls up this workflow if you press it.. They could easily have vibe coded this solution... for all its complexity.

Yeah, that's way deeper magic than #VNC provides, unfortunately.

Honestly, X11 forwarding is the closest to that, but then you're still browsing files on the server, rather than your local machine.

Of course, my answer to the latter conundrum is to just use a cloud drive for all my storage on that machine, so files I save from #QuickBooks (the only thing I use that machine for) appear on my local linux machine after about a minute.

So, between just running QB maximized and using Goog Drive for syncing my work files, vnc is ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh good enough. :BlobFoxLaugh:​

I've struggled for about a year with the decision of what to use for accounting when Windows 10 goes out of support this year, as my only windows machine at work is a headless old windows box that I only use for running #QuickBooks.

It seems the entire #accounting industry* has gone to web-based solutions, and I can only conclude that they are all horrible and clunky as frick. And it's not from lack of trying on my part.

I'm also amazed at the number of web forms I encounter in the wild where pressing Enter doesn't do anything, even when the button in question is highlighted. UI designers don't know anything anymore.

The art of UI is really in its "Lord of the Flies" moment right now. :'(

* Which, to be clear, not the industry I'm in, but I'm beholden to the "solutions" they currently offer. Taking a HARD look at #GnuCash, because I'm just not feeling the web-based stuff.

Mastodon may be free but boy has it convinced me to finally spend money to get off evil platforms. #Amazon and #Meta done, now to replace the #gmail account I've had since its eternal beta. Microsoft's going to be the hardest as my wife relies on #Quickbooks and wisely won't use the web version.

I currently use Harvest for my project management tool. Project budget tracking, time keeping, invoice management, etc.

I would like to move away from this to something that I can host locally.

I'm a single person company.

The minimum that I would need is:
- time tracking
- project budget tracking
- project expenses
- invoice sending
Nice to have:
- automated invoice reminders
- multiple currency support
- reports (time spent, annual reports, etc)

Today I edited a file I have not touched in at least 30 years, since the days of Windows 3.1. And it still does something on Windows Server 2025. My customer can now once again use Outlook to send an email from QuickBooks. WOW. It's like it just decided one day that 4GB wasn't enough and started running like molasses (this is accessed via VNC, so swapping is doubly harmful).
I replaced the 2x2GB sticks with 2x4GB, and everything is way more than "right as rain."

I gotta learn #GnuCash quickly so I can get off of this benighted software. This is my only PC and I only use it for #QuickBooks Pro Desktop (I will not use their cloud "solution").

I signed up #quicken #quickbooks as it supports HMRC’s payroll and VAT gateways. The payroll part never worked. So I ended up using HMRC’s free basic tools.

VAT worked but at £35 a month - just to submit my VAT return - when there are other services that charge that PER YEAR!!

I don’t need all the time tracking and invoicing shit. I want the basics to work first. Then I might consider the rest.

Cancelled it all just now and a feel a weight has been released from shoulders - all the menus and pops up and upselling shit is now no more. I used to get stressed just logging in. Should have acted on the when I first used it.
