5/5 Ely Cathedral 2
To finish this second set from #ElyCathedral, here's a view from inside the octagonal Lantern in the roof. The painted panels open and give you this view. The glass and painting is Victorian.

2/5 Ely Cathedral 2
You can book a tour up into the Lantern of #ElyCathedral. I stuck my camera out when they opened a panel without being able to see what I was shooting and got this.

2/5 Ely Cathedral 1
#ElyCathedral helpfully provide a mirror to help view the ceiling, but it works well for snaps too. Norman #romanesque arches and a Victorian painted ceiling.

1/5 Ely Cathedral 1
Last week I had a short break in E Anglia starting with a visit to the stunning #ElyCathedral - best known for the octagonal lantern built in the 14th century after the original roof fell down.

To finish this set here's a handheld #vertorama looking up and down the nave. Handheld is always a gamble - and there's a lot of post.

4/5 Southwark Cathedral ...
has some well-preserved/restored momuments. This shows Alderman Richard Humble (d1616) , and his two wives Elizabeth and Isabel.
From the ‘Southwark School’ of monuments made by a group of Flemish refugee sculptors who lived on Bankside.

I always like to include a #blackandwhite image in a set from a church as they bring out the patterns of light and shade..

The magnificent altar screen was first erected in 1520, but like much here is as much 19th/20th century as medieval. The gilding dates from 1930 and most figures were carved from 1905.

1/5 Southwark Cathedral
This week snaps from #SouthwarkCathedral. It only became a cathedral in 1905 and is often overlooked in the city of St Paul's and Westminster Abbey, but it dates from 1220 (though reconstructed in the late 19th century).

Here's a rather scrubby bit of land snapped through railings made rather special by winter sun.

5/5 West Ham Engine House
Two details shots today from around the beam engines that once lifted West Ham's sewage up to the Northern Outfall sewer so it could run down to the Beckton sewage works.

4/5 West Ham Engine House
Two snaps today. The first shows the beam of one of the engines - pushed and pulled by the cylinders under the LH end. The second is under the RH end showing the link from the beam to the flywheel that ran the bucket pumps for West Ham's sewage.

3/5 West Ham Engine House
The view that greets you when you enter. The boilers were behind the far wall and you can see the cylinders for each of the two engines on either side. The second snap shows a close up.
There are two cylinders for each engine: 30" HP and 48" LP. The engines turned at 12 rpm.

2/5 West Ham Engine House
A pair of beam engines were used to lift West Ham's sewage. The engine house still contains the cylinders, beams and the pumps. Here's a big wheel on the pump side of one of them.
