@tg9541 I have the Kahneman on my bookshelf. 😀 Ah so you have seen "Institute for Propaganda Analysis" from which the 7 signs of propaganda came from. (Interesting homework, apply the list to commercials/ads you see!) the How much of Plato have you read? Machiavelli (read his far more interesting Discourses)? I found echos of this theme in Plato's Republic where he talks about various types of people etc. There is a thread of elitism all through history. You might enjoy Jacques Ellul *Propaganda* and *Technological Society Ellul was well known.
Anything by Jason Stanley. Bernays considered the *father* of propaganda/PR. Which brings us to Ewen *A Social History of Spin* "First throughout the interview, Bernays expressed an unabashedly hierarchical view of society. Repeatedly he maintained that although most people respond to their world instinctively, without thought, there exist an "intelligent few" who have been charged with the responsibility of contemplating and influencing the tide of history." ibid
This seems to echo Lippmann's view as well which Dewey was opposed to. Oddly Chomsky thought Dewey was as a bad as Lippmann. "Among those who participated actively and enthusiastically in Wilson's war
were the progressive intellectuals, people of the John Dewey circle,..." - Media Control ChomskyThis should do for now...

This book was recommended by my therapist. I am so glad I found it. This author's life mirrors some of my own. I felt the heartbreak of breaking free from a broken family, and I felt the struggles of starting a higher education after almost no real schooling (thanks, mom). I had to earn my GED first, but close enough.
Honestly, it was so hard for me that it took a couple of years to read it. It has a special place on my bookshelf.

I had a cardboard box in my office with a few extra copies of YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION, which the kittens had recently taken an interest in attempting to devour. Usually when I was on calls! So! I put the books on my bookshelf, and moved a bunch of tchotchkes down a level to make room for them.
Unfortunately I forgot that was the shelf Lily sometimes sleeps on

Another author to be in my bookshelf: #InoueYasushi 1907-1991. Finished reading "Chronicle of my Mother", so heart-touching story and worthy to be recommended!

I pulled Larry Clark’s Tulsa down from my bookshelf today. It’s a book that always hits hard. Shot in the late 60s among his own friends, it isn’t observation from the outside, it’s someone documenting the life he was in the middle of. Raw, direct, and still uncomfortable to look at.
.
Curious how others feel about it now.

#GardnerDozois 's yearly #SciFi collections are slowly taking over my bookshelf. This one from 1991 starts extremely strongly with Nancy Kress's 'Beggars in Spain', which I believe she later reworked into her most well known novel. She really is the best writer in SF at handling themes of class and wealth inequality I think. Other highlights are by Alexander Jablokov, Geoffrey A. Landis, Rick Shelley, and two Greg Egan stories I already own in his Axiomatic collection. I was a little surprised that there were so many stories that were more fantasy, horror, or alt history than SF, but the quality was high so I didn't really mind. #Bookstodon @bookstodon

I just saw a picture of Anne Carson and my day is turning out to be pretty slow, so if someone needs a random Anne Carson quote, reply to this and I'll send them one, randomly picked from one of the Anne Carson books on my bookshelf.

I am selling some used books to clear space on my bookshelf. Most in near perfect condition. They are priced to sell. Take a look:

" The Guide for the Perplexed" sits as yet unread on my bookshelf. I'll get round to it at some point, I hope.
Alberto Manguel's "Maimonides: Faith in Reason" uses this Cordoban statue for an illustration and notes it was erected in 1964.
I'd like to know more about the decision to commemorate the great Jewish philosopher in the city of his birth. At the time of the Civil War, Francoist rhetoric had an ugly antisemitic streak. What had changed by the sixties? Was it a purely local initiative?

**Reposted for Alt-Text and photo**
Had this on my bookshelf for a while now and I've finally made the time to read it. Probably going to do a few pages a night as a sort of pallet cleanser.
I'm a massive fan of this world and it's stories, and whilst I wait for #WindsOfWinter and #HouseOfTheDragon I've got an itch to scratch.

Still going with the nature stuff! Sharing a nature book from my bookshelf every day. No explanations, no reviews.

@gyptazy this is really tempting. I’m planning to move my matrix server to the cloud from my onprem server and maybe I’ll try to host my mail again… I tried it once, but the underling infra was not really reliable, so I lost a lot email, including a job offer 🙃
Definitely the status page (#UptimeKuma) (for #Tutter #Blintflix and my other not so important pet projects) could move from my #Rock5 in my bookshelf to the cloud.
And $10/mo is super generous! -
@tml Yes, why not keep it? I still have my #SonyEricssonP900ChargingStand in my bookshelf. #YouNeverKnow

Now that #Purim is over, we can talk about my favorite #Jewish holiday, #Pesach
I have 20 haggadahs in pdf form in Dropbox, for easy sharing, and another 30 on my bookshelf. I’m trying to decide if this is average, excessive, or if I have work to do.
I am always looking for more #charoset recipes, especially #NutFree ones.
I’m planning (at the moment) for four seders this year (all virtual) including my own. I could do more. It’s never enough.
What are your Pesach plans #Mazeldon?

It's storytelling with capital letters, but I do appreciate the reference-fest in Stranger Things. It made me pick this one out of my bookshelf, it's the norwegian translation of A Wrinkle in Time that I read as a kid. It's printed in 1980, I guess I read it a year or two later. Thankfully neither Mrs. nor Mr. Whatsit manifested. Has read it for at least one of my kids in later years. Weird and fun! #strangerthings #awrinkleintime #books #MadeleineLEngle
