Who was Bernard Charbonneau? 🧶

Bernard Charbonneau was raised in the Bordeaux bourgeoisie. He obtained his agrégation in 1935.

In 1945, he decided not to pursue an academic career and, ‘eager to live in the countryside, he obtained a position at a small teacher training college in the Pyrenean foothills, in Lescar, France, where he remained until his retirement’. L'enseignement ressemble beaucoup à ce qu'Ellul appelle la "pré-propagande" - le conditionnement des esprits avec de vastes quantités d'informations incohérentes, déjà diffusées à des fins inavouées et présentées comme des "faits" et de "l'enseignement". Ellul poursuit en désignant les intellectuel·les comme étant virtuellement les plus vulnérables de tou·tes à la propagande moderne, et ce pour trois raisons :
1. iels absorbent la plus grande quantité d'informations de seconde main, invérifiables ;
2. iels ressentent le besoin impérieux d'avoir une opinion sur toutes les questions importantes de notre époque, et succombent donc facilement aux opinions que leur propose la propagande sur toutes ces informations indigestes ;
3. iels s'estiment capables de "juger par soi-même". Iels ont littéralement besoin de la propagande.
En fait, le besoin de propagande de la part du "propagandé" est l'un des éléments les plus puissants de la thèse d'Ellul.

En 1945, il décide de ne pas faire de carrière universitaire et "désireux de vivre à la campagne, il se fait nommer dans une petite école normale d'instituteurs du Piémont pyrénéen, à Lescar, près de Pau, où il reste jusqu'à sa retraite." I found echos of this theme in Plato's Republic where he talks about various types of people etc. There is a thread of elitism all through history. You might enjoy Jacques Ellul *Propaganda* and *Technological Society Ellul was well known.
Anything by Jason Stanley. Bernays considered the *father* of propaganda/PR. Which brings us to Ewen *A Social History of Spin* "First throughout the interview, Bernays expressed an unabashedly hierarchical view of society. Repeatedly he maintained that although most people respond to their world instinctively, without thought, there exist an "intelligent few" who have been charged with the responsibility of contemplating and influencing the tide of history." ibid

... education is largely identical with what Ellul calls “pre-propaganda”—the conditioning of minds with vast amounts of incoherent information, already dispensed for ulterior purposes and posing as “facts” and as “education.” Ellul follows through by designating intellectuals as virtually the most vulnerable of all to modern propaganda, for three reasons:
1. they absorb the largest amount of secondhand, unverifiable information;
2. they feel a compelling need to have an opinion on every important question of our time, and thus easily succumb to opinions offered to them by propaganda on all such indigestible pieces of information;
3. they consider themselves capable of “judging for themselves.” They literally need propaganda.
In fact, the need for propaganda on the part of the “propagandee” is one of the most powerful elements of Ellul’s thesis.

L'enseignement ressemble beaucoup à ce qu'Ellul appelle la "pré-propagande" - le conditionnement des esprits avec de vastes quantités d'informations incohérentes, déjà diffusées à des fins inavouées et présentées comme des "faits" et de "l'enseignement". Ellul poursuit en désignant les intellectuel·les comme étant virtuellement les plus vulnérables de tou·tes à la propagande moderne, et ce pour trois raisons :
1. iels absorbent la plus grande quantité d'informations de seconde main, invérifiables ;
2. iels ressentent le besoin impérieux d'avoir une opinion sur toutes les questions importantes de notre époque, et succombent donc facilement aux opinions que leur propose la propagande sur toutes ces informations indigestes ;
3. iels s'estiment capables de "juger par soi-même". Iels ont littéralement besoin de la propagande.
