  1. Ok, so a draft is done. Still rough, but an overview of the educational philosophies and pedagogical approaches that can relate to film school education, and perhaps more broadly to practice-based arts.

It still needs a rewrite or two before submission, but I like the idea of getting a draft out there. Perhaps it’s even of interest for some of you…

  3. My research into educational theory and philosophy and how to relate them to the teaching practices in film and media arts schools continues. Here are some notes from a talk I gave on April 16th, which I believe will form the basis of an article I plan to finish before the summer.

  5. @Pepijn

    Have sat on several horses.

Pet peeve: "boost for scientific accuracy" - you aren't going to get anything that even slightly resembles a representative sample, even if you look at it through dark glasses after 6 beers.

I have previously said that any post containing a poll and asking for boosts to improve accuracy must have "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" as one of the poll answers, and I stick by that assertion.

  7. "[I] am flustered by a noise heard. Empirically, that noise is fearsome; it really is, not merely phenomenally or subjectively so. That is what it is experienced as being. But, when I experience the noise as a known thing, I find it to be innocent of harm. It is the tapping of a shade against the window, owing to movements of the wind. The experience has changed; that is, the thing experienced has changed…"

Lo spazio digitale, esattamente come lo spazio urbano, riflette le disuguaglianze, i pregiudizi, le forme di esclusione che caratterizzano le società umane. 9. "Boys and girls alike do cooking and carpentry work, for the object of the work is not to train them for any trade or profession, but to train them to be capable, happy members of society." - John Dewey on *Fairhope school* in *Schools of tomorrow*

This is in direct contrast to what many of our generation were subjected to!

  10. re-reading some quotes of John Dewey this morning.

"Dislike to employ scientific knowledge as it functions in men's occupations is itself a survival of an aristocratic culture. The notion that "applied" knowledge was somehow less worthy than "pure" knowledge, was natural to a society in which all useful work was performed by slaves and serfs, and in which industry was controlled by the models set by custom rather than intelligence." - Democracy and Education

  11. @tg9541 I have the Kahneman on my bookshelf. 😀 Ah so you have seen "Institute for Propaganda Analysis" from which the 7 signs of propaganda came from. (Interesting homework, apply the list to commercials/ads you see!) the How much of Plato have you read? Machiavelli (read his far more interesting Discourses)? I found echos of this theme in Plato's Republic where he talks about various types of people etc. There is a thread of elitism all through history. You might enjoy Jacques Ellul *Propaganda* and *Technological Society Ellul was well known.
Anything by Jason Stanley. Bernays considered the *father* of propaganda/PR. Which brings us to Ewen *A Social History of Spin* "First throughout the interview, Bernays expressed an unabashedly hierarchical view of society. Repeatedly he maintained that although most people respond to their world instinctively, without thought, there exist an "intelligent few" who have been charged with the responsibility of contemplating and influencing the tide of history." ibid
This seems to echo Lippmann's view as well which Dewey was opposed to. Oddly Chomsky thought Dewey was as a bad as Lippmann. "Among those who participated actively and enthusiastically in Wilson's war
were the progressive intellectuals, people of the John Dewey circle,..." - Media Control Chomsky

    This should do for now...

  13. I was trying to post this on my blog, but it seems to be not cooperating these days… So here comes a long thread on #Pedagogy, #FineArtsEducation, #4ECognition, #Phenomenology, #Dewey, and #Vygotsky
    _______________________________________

I have a feeling there will be several of these…

This fall term I will be on a research leave. I am temporarily (and voluntarily!) relieved of all my regular duties in order to spend time doing research — the research I would normally do in my free time, in the moments between meetings, on the weekends… Suddenly that is my main job; I’m not quite sure how I’ll respond once the term starts again, but I’ll do my best to manage.

And what will I be researching? A couple of things: (1/5)

  14. My friend Peter Suber has put together a handful of quotes from John #Dewey about the nature of a "#public," if only to remind us that our ideas have histories. Dewey doesn't think of publics in terms of communications, as we tend to these days. Interesting! suber.pubpub.org/pub/nnpkmt91/

    Here's Peter's own toot about it: fediscience.org/@petersuber/11

  15. I have been using #Goodreads for way too long. It is time for something different. Nice-to-haves would include an Android app that can scan barcodes and add to categories, Goodreads import, support for both #Dewey and #LibraryOfCongress systems, integration with #Calibre, and ability to keep my reading and library info private. I've seen #libib and #LibraryThing recommended. #BookWyrm too, though I'm looking more for personal categorization than social sharing. Suggestions? #AskFedi

  16. #Democracy "is but a name for the fact that human nature is developed only when its elements take part in directing things which are common, things for the sake of which man and women form groups- families, industrial companies, governments, churches, scientific associations and so on. The principle holds as much of one form of association, say in industry and commerce, as it does in government" - John #Dewey (1948)

  17. "It is immensely clearer than it has ever been before that the democratic way of life commits us to unceasing effort to break down the walls of class, of unequal opportunity, of color, race, sect, and nationality, which estranges human beings from one another."

  18. #Addams, #Dewey & #James pointed to where there is most struggle to survive as where the most vital experiences of life exist. Addams went so far as to say that if we "shut ourselves away" from sympathy with those experiences, we can mobilize only "half our [own] faculties."

  19. Given his stature in philosophy, and for all its apparent incongruence, John #Dewey's "mystic experience" is surprisingly unknown. Yet its conclusion is a thing of serene beauty. He described it to Max Eastman, maybe 60 yrs after the fact, for Eastman's book 'Heroes I Have Known':

  20. "It is not the rise of the irrational as such...that must give pause to those who would use #intelligence as a director of instinct & passion. It is the deliberate cultivation of the irrational. For the cult is not spontaneous & natural; it is intentional & purposeful."
    - John #Dewey, 1918... two days before Armistice, to be precise.

  21. #Nietzsche's yes-saying #philosophy can be read as a poetic formulation of what later occurred as the universal approach to #instrumentalism in #Dewey's philosophy. The moral disposition resulting from wholly embodying either is the same: Come what may, I will find a way to use it.
