My #GNU #Linux Journey – Part 1: Discovering the Arch Way
When I first installed #ArchLinux, I quickly realized it wasn’t like other systems. Nothing came preinstalled. No GUI installer. No sudo. No editor. Just a prompt. And that was the best thing that could’ve happened.
Here’s what I actually learned:
That a Linux “installation” is often just a well-organized file extraction. No registry. No black box like in #Windows.
That #pacman is a powerful tool and #sudo doesn’t work until you configure it. I had to add my user to the #wheel group and use #visudo, a special editor to safely modify sudoers.
That my user password, not root’s, is used for sudo – which felt secure and efficient once I understood the logic.
I didn’t just get a system running – I learned what a system is.

For this weekend I've chosen "install #archlinux on a laptop".
Not because I long to say "I use Arch, btw" lol - it's just to prove to myself I can actually #rtfm and complete it. -

Quite happy with my new #fedora setup. #openFrameworks works (mostly) on it, and I have been able to replicate my old i3 setup with a few tweaks to account for different ways of doing things. Some apps that I used to use are in different places (or I have had to find alternatives), but all in all it's been pretty painless. I'll still keep #archlinux around on my other laptop, but for the one I'm keeping around for video coding I am hoping for more stable times...

Started diving into #dlib and #openframeworks implementation of face-tracking. First step: get the damn thing working on #archlinux! Wrote a blog post detailing how I got to the first milestone: https://roosnaflak.com/tech-and-research/set-up-ofxfacetracker2-on-arch-linux/

Reinstalled #ArchLinux on my #ROGAlly Z1 Extreme, dual booted with Windows 11. KDE is a nice interface but is pretty awful to use with only a touchscreen so I installed #phosh with my custom #squeekboard layouts and #TouchpadEmulator. This could be the best UI for "desktop mode" on touchscreen gaming handhelds if it handled fullscreen games (especially with UI scaling above 100%) better and supported Variable Refresh Rate. It is so nice for everything besides gaming.

installed Arch onto the Pinephone. It does feel smoother than Manjaro did. I have noticed 2 of the same bugs tho.
*1 - sometimes when trying to type a capital "C" using the soft keyboard it will register a backspace.
*2 - random lockup/freezing that needs a hard reboot.
both these problems were present on Manjaro & I believe I had the keyboard issue on pmOS also.
Need to test if my mic works for calls now.

Ah, what a lovely morning to figure out why my desktop suddenly isn't starting...
(I figured it out. I just needed to update my graphics drivers)

I got the last Windows game I really cared about working through Linux a week ago, so I've taken my ROG Ally X and installed CachyOS on it and have it working like a Steam Deck would. I think it's time to do the same for the arcade machine (though running Attract Mode). Maybe I'll write up a blog on it if anyone would be interested?
This is one of those times where I kind of want to set up a declarative configuration so that maybe other people can use it as well for their own.
I may do it with decman: https://github.com/kiviktnm/decman?tab=readme-ov-file

Так с меня хватит, надоела эта лотерея перед каждым обновлением, перешел в #archlinux на #linuxlts ядро.

Okay, next big thing: get `svt-av1-psyex` packaged up for installation on Arch Linux. Figured the easiest way would be to grab the PKGBUILD for `svt-av1-psy-git` and tweak as necessary. Also, need to add Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support because reasons.
-
If you want to write a #PKGBUILD on #ArchLinux :archlinux: build it in a clean chroot. Don't rely on makepkg.

A wild #AUR #PKGBUILD update appears :pokeball:

Testing Galene videoconference server software
During the Covid-19 pandemic Jitsi-Meet was one of the more popular software among some people for videoconference calls. However, Jitsi-Meet is not very secure. If people choose a very simple room name and no password then it can happen that suddenly strangers join your video call. Self-hosting and maintaining Jitsi-Meet is also not super easy.
Galene is different because it comes with the feature to create users, and users can have operate privileges to create invite links for other users. The invite links can be time limited.
I’ve tested self-hosting Galene and I was happy to see that it ran pretty well on moderate hardware (VPS with 1 GB RAM, with a swap file. Using Debian Linux as OS).
The question remains how many calls and users it can handle very well.
Galene has community provided packages for Yunohost, Arch Linux (AUR) and FreeBSD. A drawback of Galene is that it appears to be a one person project but there’s many one person projects and software can be forked when a project becomes dormant for some reason.
Off-topic : On the same VPS I’ve also installed Prosody with Yunohost and after getting the DNS settings right, as suggested by Yunohost, video-calls with Conversations IM app worked out of the box. Very cool! Thank you people at Yunohost!!! :)))

#Archlinux fun-of-the-day: My updater needs external updates to update my updaters build chain 🤡

@erici @archlinux I would say you can't install or update packages from #aur without inspecting the pkgbuild.
Aur helpers like #paru make it easy. They even show you what has changed in the build script while upgrading.

#ArchLinux #EndeavourOSLinux #GarudaLinux #EndeavourOS #Linux #Paru #Pacman #yay
Someone recommended I try yay for package management on an #Arch system, vs paru. It is my understanding that these applications are abstractions of pacman, which i presume is an abstraction of something... but i'm new to Arch Linux, and I'm not sure that matters at this point in the timeline (approaching the #Singularity). In any case...
I said, Yay?
Yayo! N'yuk, n'yuk. And I didn't really say that. But I did spend some time playing with images I found upon 🤷 googling the word, #yayo 🤷👯💃👯💃🤷💃 👯💃👯

🚀 Oh, look! Another Arch-based distro promising "blazingly fast" performance because that’s never been done before. 😂 It's like Linux for people who think typing "CachyOS" repeatedly will unlock some magic speed boost. 🖥️✨

oh yeah and my semi-regular report: #ArchLinux mainline kernel is still broken for my #IntelGraphics integrated GPU, still on LTS until this gets fixed
i'm going to have to learn how to debug the kernel to figure this one out once LTS breaks, aren't I?
