Right after the XDMCP class diagrams, there's a secton on VNC server support. lightdm has a VNC proxy delegator thing built in!

So fornicate systemd, I just need to add a stanza to lightdm's configuration to listen on port 5901 and call Xvnc. Which I did. And it worked in just a few tries. Success! Tuesday afternoon, maybe 10 hours after I started.

Rebooted a couple of times to verify it's really working, and it is. So now I can move on to the next thing.

Anyway, the information on the Internet was uniformly wrong about how to integrate VNC into systemd. Wrong in many interesting ways. I delved into the systemd docs and finally got Xvnc plumbed into it, and then the problem was that VNC didn't have any X clients to run. So I looked up which display manager Mint uses. It's lightdm.

(Question for the peanut gallery: does Ubuntu use lightdm? Canonical apparently wrote it, but Ubuntu might have migrated away.)

Linux Frage: Nutze unter Debian quemu als hypervisor/Vitualisierungs-Enige. In einer virtuellen Maschine nutze ich omnissa horizon client (vmware). Bei suspend/resume am Gast-OS friert das Durchreichen von Tastatur-/Maus-Events an den horizon Client/die Remote-Sitzung ein. Das lässt sich z.B. reaktivieren, wenn ich in einem terminal unter dem Gast-OS eine Tastatureingabe tätige. Andere (Konfig-Lösungen) habe ich nicht gefunden. Ideen?

FYI: If you used `gdmflexiserver` to launch a new session from something like `sway`, *this no longer exists upstream*.

Remedy: I switched to `lightdm`, which has `dm-tool` (which lets you switch to the greeter).

I finally got OpenHamClock auto launching on my Raspberry Pi 5, using the kiosk installer from them

Lightdm wouldn't auto login, no matter which setting file I changed, nor what I changed it to

Eventually, out of desperation, I switched to gdm3 and now it's working perfectly as I expected, lol

That was an hour of debugging I wish I had back, lol

So...on my laptop, the Desktop Manager hides possible users on login. That's good for rubber hose security (only if I have password root login disabled) #lightdm

But my phone is another story. All users are known once logged in. There is no "hide other users" password. I often read about people getting popped by the police for political posts. ICE murders and disappears people for this kind of thing. Would be nice to have a certain password to log into a curated "work" safe account with a browsing history and photos I share with my boss.

This is also a post about #GraphineOS which may be secure, but not against the old rubber hose security bypass trick. And every ICE roadblock with guns pulled out.

Spent last 2 days, during nap hours of the little one, to install #FreeBSD on my old HP EliteBook 840 G3 :ablobcatbongo:

It has been really interesting, faced some problems with hardware driver and crash that needed me to understand how to unload modules before boot, but at the end I've everything working fine for graphics and wireless drivers

Even installed #xfce and #lightdm to get a nice desktop environment

The pkg package manager is pretty similar to the #Linux #Debian apt so not totally lost here :ablobcatcoffee:

Still a lot to learn but the FreeBSD handbook is well writen

I won't stop to use Linux but it's a good experience ton learn here

Ich habe auf meinem #Linux Desktop Rechner mal ein wenig mit den Displaymanagern rumgespielt.
Hintergrund: Ich habe ursprünglich den #Fedora #Cinnamon Spin installiert. Inzwischen nutze ich aber nur noch KDE. Da #Cinnamon den #LightDM als Desktopmanager hat und KDE als Standard eigentlich den #sddm dachte ich mir ich wechsle um es konsistent zu haben.
sddm fand ich gruselig. Habe dann #gdm probiert. Noch schlimmer.
Ich bin jetzt zurück auf LightDM und bleibe dabei. sddm und gdm werden gelöscht

Als am letzten Donnerstag mein #glasfaseranschluss ausgefallen ist, kam es seltsamerweise gleichzeitig zum beinahe Komlettausfall meines #manjaro #linux Systems.
Von jetzt auf gleich startete die grafische Oberfläche nicht mehr, #lightdm wollte einfach nicht mehr starten.
Vom USB-Stick konnte ich das Manjaro #Livesystem starten. Die #grafikkarte (bzw. #onboard Grafik, AMD) funktioniert also im Prinzip.
Bleibt mir nur noch die Konsole und die Hoffnung, dass ich bei Rückkehr des Internets #sddm installieren kann oder ein #update Abhilfe bringt und es dann hoffentlich wieder läuft.
Für Anregungen, was die Ursache sein könnte und wie man das Problem lösen könnte, bin ich dankbar.

alright, so lesson learned: if you have the display-setup-script parameter set in lightdm.conf to automatically configure multiple monitors with xrandr and you change what inputs the monitors are connected to without fixing the script it will not just quietly fail, log an error somewhere obvious and continue. it will hang the machine on a black screen with a blinking cursor at startup and will not allow you to get to the login screen

this has been my frustration for most of today, i set that script up so long ago i barely remember it existed

Starting to check out #niri - still having some strange issues launching it from #lightDm where I lose all keyboard input. Launching it from console seems to work fine if I’ve already logged in with gnome (Wayland) or sway.

Probably just need to rtfm tbh

Weird #FreeBSD issue on my x260 #laptop - after the latest update (I’m on 14.3-RELEASE-p1) with Gnome 47, #GDM lost the ability to switch over to #Gnome (on #Xorg): the session just hangs. I can switch to a console and stop GDM without issue but can’t get past the login screen. I can login using #lightdm, for some reason, so it doesn’t seem to be a general issue with Gnome…

Warum ich heute müde bin? Weil ich kurz vorm Schlafengehen diesen Fehler-Screen auf dem Laptop bekam und dann eine Stunde genervt-panisch versucht habe, das Notebook wieder an den Start zu bekommen.

Irgendwas hat #GDM zerschossen. Also nicht Ich, sondern irgendetwas, denn ich habe seit Wochen nichts umkonfiguriert oder hinzuinstalliert, nur brav alle 1-2 Tage Updates installiert.
Ich habe keine Ahnung, was genau und warum das ausgelöst hat, aber mit #LightDM startet das Ding wieder ohne Murren. Das muss diese Instabilität von #Arch sein, vor der mich immer alle gewarnt haben. #Linux

Heute hat mich #manjaro #linux verlassen. Es ging damit los, dass nach einem Reboot #lightdm nicht mehr startete. Booten von Manjaro vom USB-Stick brachte es auch nicht.
Ein anderer älterer Rechner sollte übergangsweise als Ersatz dienen, alte Grafikkarte, kein Erfolg. Ich verzweifele.
Alle Rechner haben #grafikkarten von #nvidia drin. So krass noch nie erlebt.
Neues System ist bestellt und war eigentlich schon längst überfällig.
