When one considers how things have gone since 1930 or thereabouts, it is not easy to believe in the survival of civilization. I do not argue from this that the only thing to do is to adjure practical politics, retire to some remote place and concentrate either on individual salvation or on building up self-supporting communities against the day when the atom bombs have done their work. I think one must continue the political struggle, just as a doctor must try to save the life of a patient who is probably going to die. But I do suggest that we shall get nowhere unless we start by recognizing that political behaviour is largely non-rational, that the world is suffering from some kind of mental disease which must be diagnosed before it can be cured.

I always appreciate a good write-up of outages and Google had one for their outage on the 12th. They put in new policies around quota handling, but then that had some unexpected side effects. Since they didn't have a feature flag to turn it off quickly, recovery took a little bit longer.
One reason I like this is it makes you think of what features need to go into APIs/services and how everything fits together. Google runs planet-scale infrastructure, but I think there are takeaways for projects of any size in write-ups like these.

I am convinced that the phrase "root cause" and it's loftier sister "RCA" (root cause analysis) have become semiotic objects that have grown past their raw definitions.
We are using them like this:
OH: "I haven't used Google in my browser search for a year but I still use the word 'google it' to mean search the web."
OH: "The RCA ticket is opened at the beginning of the incident even though we have no idea that a RCA can be run."
