It finally happened 🤩
Movim can now handle video calls with a SFU!
It works with exactly the same flow as the full P2P (Muji) version: you start a call in a group chat and others can join, but with a huge bandwidth optimization behind the scenes. ✨
To switch your group chat video call to SFU, simply invite an SFU XMPP service into it. That's it!
And here's a little surprise 🎁!
The upcoming #Movim release will come with a bundled SFU #XMPP service that you can connect to any XMPP server, thanks to the widely deployed XEP-0114: Jabber Component Protocol 👀. This service wraps the #Galene project.
Thanks again to @nlnet for making all of this possible 🫶

We've been a little quiet lately 👀, but silence just means we've been heads-down building something exciting.
The next Movim release comes with a special surprise 🎁: a fully integrated SFU service, powered by #Galene, that plugs directly into your XMPP server and lets it handle large group calls effortlessly 🌬️.
And of course, it will rely on fully standardized XMPP, as always.
Fun fact: pair the Movim SFU with @ejabberd and your video calls run on a 100% French stack 🇫🇷😁!
European tech doesn't have to play catch-up, it can finally lead! 🇪🇺
Huge thanks to @nlnet for funding this project 🫶

> Currently investigating the #Galene video-conference server to see how it can be integrated in Movim properly.
You can use the work already done for Libervia 2 years ago, with a SFU component using Galène https://www.goffi.org/forge/goffi/libervia-backend/src/branch/main/libervia/backend/plugins/plugin_comp_conferences
And the accompanying spec (that I need to update to re-propose, just need to find a couple of hours): https://xmpp.org/extensions/inbox/av_conferences.html

@debacle @gnemmi @smn @movim Hey, SFU (big conferences) is not just on the roadmap, there is a working prototype for nearly 2 years now (based on the excellent Galène), with corresponding specs in XSF /inbox. Well was working actually, broken right now due to big changes in web frontend, but should be back soon.

C'est un des projets tech qui m'impressionne le plus en ce moment.
Demain matin on va tester Galene.
https://github.com/jech/galene

RE: https://mastodon.thenewoil.org/@thenewoil/116431847668611345
People often take us for "extremists" when we tell them we don't use #Zoom and other surveillance systems masquerading as commercial products. They should rather call us insightful.
Why? Yet another example: when you go to a Zoom meeting, you give them #biometric information. Of course they will tell you it's to protect you from #AI and #deepfakes
Don't believe the hype. Use #Galene -> https://galene.org/

Instead of having a lot of standalone Ansible roles on my forgejo instance, I have created my own collection.
Let me announce you the first release of the "jriou.general" Ansible collection 🚀 https://git.riou.xyz/jriou/ansible

Had an opportunity to use my own #galene installation for Shadowrun today. It worked quite well for a game.
Sound even seemed clearer than our usual of discord or Google meets. -
Thinking of switching to #galene for my games again.
Actually, I was thinking of running a #mumble server, but I wanted a web interface so my kid's friends could use it without installing anything, but for some reason I failed with that.
Galène on the other hand is easy to install and does handle a lot of participants in a video chat without issues.
The UI is a bit barebones though. -
Testing Galene videoconference server software
During the Covid-19 pandemic Jitsi-Meet was one of the more popular software among some people for videoconference calls. However, Jitsi-Meet is not very secure. If people choose a very simple room name and no password then it can happen that suddenly strangers join your video call. Self-hosting and maintaining Jitsi-Meet is also not super easy.
Galene is different because it comes with the feature to create users, and users can have operate privileges to create invite links for other users. The invite links can be time limited.
I’ve tested self-hosting Galene and I was happy to see that it ran pretty well on moderate hardware (VPS with 1 GB RAM, with a swap file. Using Debian Linux as OS).
The question remains how many calls and users it can handle very well.
Galene has community provided packages for Yunohost, Arch Linux (AUR) and FreeBSD. A drawback of Galene is that it appears to be a one person project but there’s many one person projects and software can be forked when a project becomes dormant for some reason.
Off-topic : On the same VPS I’ve also installed Prosody with Yunohost and after getting the DNS settings right, as suggested by Yunohost, video-calls with Conversations IM app worked out of the box. Very cool! Thank you people at Yunohost!!! :)))

Skype will shut down soon. I wanted an open source alternative so I tried Galene (https://galene.org/) multiple times to call my dad and it works very well.
For now, I spawn a disposable instance on OVHcloud using OpenTofu and the OpenStack provider. Then I configure the software using Ansible. The code is available here https://git.riou.xyz/jriou/galene-cloud.
Tomorrow, I would like to only host a TURN server on my VPS and self-host galene on my homelab.

We were testing #galene as an alternative to #discord video/voice-chat in online #ttrpg sessions today. (In addition to #irc as a chat that is)
It worked fine. Galene has really low ressource demands and we had multiple people in the chat on two continents with good quality video and multiple simultaneous screenshare windows at the same time.
If discord enshittifies too much I think we at least have a way to play our games. -
Thank you so much to everyone who joined the live #auction this afternoon via #Galène! We are so happy with the turnout and thrilled that a few of our most valued memorabilia will be safe in the hands of #FreeSoftware community members. #FSF #FSF40

If you missed your chance earlier this week to bid on the silent #auction items, we've re-opened a few of them on #Galène: https://u.fsf.org/466 #FSF40 #memorabilia

We are now bidding on auction item number five! Not only does the GNU party by Etienne Suvasa (1993) decorate the cover of Introduction to the Command Line, it is also a fun reminder that computing in freedom is worthy of celebration. Find out a bit more about this lively artwork and bid via #Galène: https://u.fsf.org/46b #auction #FSF40 #memorabilia

We are now moving on to the Internet Hall of Fame medal, which isn't only quite stunning in its polished frame - it's recognition that the #FreeSoftware movement is important to the Internet. Check it out and bid via #Galène now: https://u.fsf.org/46b #auction #FSF40

Two stunning prints of the artwork by Gary Torrisi studio that grace the cover of Using GCC - The GNU Compiler Collection Reference Manual for GCC that could be yours! Take a closer look and bid via #Galène while there's still time: https://u.fsf.org/46b #auction #GNU #FSF40

Our live #auction is starting off strong with a hand-drawn, early version of the iconic GNU logo, the "GNU head" by Etienne Suvasa from 1992, is encased in a gorgeous golden frame. Read about its wide appearance throughout the world here https://u.fsf.org/46b before bidding on #Galène #auction #GNU FSF40

I've used Galène to call my dad today instead of Skype. The video quality was better. There was no voice interruption. I just need to finish the setup there and there (create valid TLS certificates, translations) and the solution will be ready.

We hope to see many of you at the live #FSF memorabilia #auction this Sunday, March 23, 2025 at 14:00 EDT (18:00 UTC)! If you are planning to participate, please read through the terms and conditions before joining us on #Galène: https://u.fsf.org/46a #FSF40

I tried to set up a Galene server this morning on a disposable instance on a cloud provider. The web interface failed on every call. Forbidden on the root page, not found on others. Even the TURN server didn't work. That was supposed to be easier than my previous self-hosted try, but it was worse!
-
I sent in a pull request for #Galene to not allow unmuting until camera/microphone is enabled (https://github.com/jech/galene/pull/247). Definitely on the side of user error there, but we might as well have some kind of guardrails... =)

🎉 The #NLnet Libervia-AV project is officially complete! 🎉
https://nlnet.nl/project/Libervia-AV/
I've successfully implemented one-to-one calls, desktop sharing, group calls & more, plus ported #Galène #SFU to #XMPP.
Huge thanks to everyone who supported this project!
I'll probably post a blog about the work done around the end of the summer.
Now it's time for some vacations 😎.

Happy to announce that I've got an extension on my current #NLnet A/V grant for #Libervia to work on S.F.U. (Selective Forwarding Unit), it's a service needed for large A/V conference rooms, à la #Jitsi.
However, the delay is really short (hard deadline in August), so lot of work planned in coming weeks.
It will be based on #Galène and parts will be available for whole #XMPP ecosystem.
Thanks again to #NLnet and @EUCommission #NGIAssure for their support.
