Edit: I checked the Arch repos and the reason why is because those haven't been updated to GNOME 51. So, it will take some time before GNOME 51 is deployed, even on Arch which is interesting.

I think my first blog post is going to be ✨my thoughts✨ about GNOME after using 50.5 for about a week solid.

The only reason I am not on GNOME 51 is because Garuda Linux hasn't updated to the latest version yet. This is fine, I would prefer they make sure everything looks good before doing so (as updating GNOME versions historically breaks extensions and I think that is what they are waiting on).

Accomplished the explicitly installed package list broken down by Extra/ChaoticAUR Repo, Flatpak, Distrobox Container, and AppImage managed by Gear Lever.

It was easy because 'pacman -Qqe' is a beautiful command that prints an explicitly installed packages list in alphabetical order.

Love that, does serious werk and makes it so I might actually do some practice with Python today and the prototype file manager!

I literally am very silly, got confused why some of my AppImages weren't launching on my fresh install of Garuda Linux, GNOME version. Realized that some of them were based on fuse2 rather than fuse3.

Investigated my installed versions of Fuse, discovered by default, fuse3 is installed but not fuse2, given how many AppImages haven't migrated to fuse3...This is crazy work. ROFL

However, as with anything Arch-related, I looked up the package name for the version I needed (I talk about the names that I figured out only after looking them up above). "sudo pacman -S fuse2" The magic spell that solves my problems, is typically "sudo pacman -S (write what you need to install here, hun)".

I will be making notes of what I installed to fully set this damn thing up in order to remember what is going on with this machine. As that is usually my first task after setting up my computer, because it helps having an understanding of what is installed on your computer. ROFL Right after my grocery trip.

Garuda Nix is an interesting mashup: NixOS underneath, with Garuda’s Dr460nized or Mokka desktop experience on top. You get NixOS’s declarative approach plus Garuda’s opinionated settings, theming and Chaotic Nyx packages.

It’s a neat way to combine two very different Linux philosophies into one distro experience while keeping what makes each interesting.

I'm happy to report that the $0.99 m.2 adapter and AX200NGW Wi-Fi 6 m.2 card on AliExpress WORK on both my 2014 MacBook Air and 2015 MacBook Pro!

The AX200NGW also works on my other laptops, a HP 14-dq1025cl and a ThinkPad A475.

@BrideOfLinux CachyOS has been great on Fox, my HP EliteDesk 800 G3. Zero complaints. It has recovered nicely from all of the storm-related power outages we've had this year and kept going without issues.

And Shelly is so good that I've installed it on all of my Garuda Linux laptops. Octopi has now become the tool that I use to install Shelly.

@datenteiler I have a 2012 MacBook Pro, a 2014 MacBook Air, a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina, and a 2014 5K iMac.

All of them run beautifully on Garuda Linux (Arch).

I did have to install and configure mbpfan, and the old Broadcom Wi-Fi cards have fallen out of support, necessitating a DKMS driver or replacing the card with a USB adapter (or I hear that the Apple to m.2 Wi-Fi adapter on Aliexpress also works).

Interesting. I wonder if Fedora's use of tuned-ppd over power-profiles-daemon explains the slow performance on my laptops compared to #GarudaLinux and #CachyOS.

Boot times and application launch times are consistently faster for me on Garuda and CachyOS than on #Fedora, which is why I switched.

I know that the answer here is complex, and I haven't found an answer that actually works for me. I'm on a laptop, and use a secondary monitor as my primary. Whenever I have both the laptop screen and the secondary monitor active, there is a massive performance drop. I've tried attempting to make the laptop screen use the UHD graphics and the HDMI connected laptop use the separate GPUs (I don't think it worked, and don't remember what I tried). Is this something that just can't be overcome? I can give more details/logs if needed. #archlinux #garudalinux #kde #wayland


Editing to add here that I figured it out, and as usual, it was something stupid. I let my snaps go unmanaged, which took up a huge amount of space and left almost no room for the swap file. I took care of the oh, 130gb of unnecessary backups. Lo, and behold, the system works much better. #mutualaid #mutualaidrequest #mutualaidrequests #homelessness

I've had such great performance and reliability from #GarudaLinux on my MacBooks that I purchased a new battery for each of them, making them fully-functional and portable once again!

Hardcase is light and portable, and the Retina display on Wolffe is just gorgeous.

Both of these were complete dogs on #macOS under Open Core Legacy Patcher, but on Garuda Linux, they fly.

@Steve12L I use Garuda Linux almost exclusively on my computers. I run the "Mokka" KDE Plasma variant. It's a nice tone-down from "Dr4gonized," but it still has plenty of character.

It has been VERY stable and runs on my VERY old 2nd-gen ThinkPad, my Intel MacBooks & iMac, and my daily driver 10th-gen HP.

#GarudaLinux is the distro that restored my faith in #ArchLinux after the Manjaro debacle a few years ago.

@meuon I love me some #Fedora! Fedora was the end of my distro-hopping for quite awhile. It’s rock-solid, has a great feature set like you discovered, has safe and stable updates, and ran on damn near everything I installed it on without having to go find drivers. Easy to recommend.

For a production environment, Fedora would be my first choice. For my personal use, however, I use #GarudaLinux. It boots in ⅔ the time and everything runs faster overall.

@Natanox I’ve tried #CachyOS on a few of my laptops, and I like it quite a bit.

For some reason, it does not like the Wi-Fi adapters in my laptops, however, and will only connect at 2.4 GHz. That, and missing OOTB hibernation support made me move my laptops back to #GarudaLinux. For the year or so that I have been using it, it has been remarkably stable. The only real issues that I have had have been ones of my own making.

@feed I use Garuda Linux on all of my laptops and iMac. The built-in tools are top-notch and it’s been VERY reliable.

I also appreciate the opinionated nature of #GarudaLinux. Anyone can put out a generic #Arch distro. Garuda made choices and is sticking by them…even if I then have to re-do the desktop theme… 😜

I have installed Garuda Mokka, and it is lovely! KDE, but smoky, gray, with pops of muted rainbow. I quite like it. It took me about a few hours to get the basics configured, I shall do the rest after sleeping. Then visiting the Hungry Chickpea and getting pie because I'll hunger for a meal and then pie!

This time I will get a salad and the chicken wrap (as the chef will be there to make a version without the egg included because I cannot with soft or hardboiled eggs).

Success has been had, I have done the thing again: Messed with the configuration file to make Vivaldi Browser launch using Win Key+B, installed Mullvad VPN and enabled its daemon.

This time the command read "systemctl enable --now mullvad-daemon.service". Finally using the "--now" flag that @wendigo kept telling me about! After all this time, I stopped being so timid over silly shit. 😂 I finally got tired of waiting for the reboot for a service to be enabled. 😅

My mission was accomplished with only a few updates getting in the way as both the Desktop and Laptop Garuda installs needed them! The other issue will require further research and hunting in order to resolve it. However, I do have the config files Garuda Sway and have started to read them. If I get anything useful out of them, that is anyone's guess! ROFL Maybe I will learn yet how to link Fastfetch to Alacritty, and make it display automatically. It could be super simple, or unimaginably hard.

Wow, that Set-up for Garuda Sway was faster than expected. Using what I remembered from my experience with Distroshelf and how it worked the last time…I quickly got it up and running on my Garuda Sway install.

I will probably update some things with the theme of Sway, as I like it but Foot Terminal needs some help…That will come later on over time. As I learn some more about C.

Also, I started to read the Sway default configuration file, I also downloaded the Fedora additions to Sway from their gitlab so I can see what they did. As it would be easier to learn how to make modifications. This will eventually make it easier for me to mess with Niri.

As I tried to install the Sway WM alongside Dr460nized Garuda, a weird conflict caused a blank screen after logging in.

I suspect this is due to the login manager used for Garuda Sway is "QtGreeted" that doesn't seem to play nicely alongside sddm which is used for Dr460nized Garuda.

Once, I learn more about Sway, I might switch full-time to Garuda Sway. As gaming customization can easily be applied to any version, it just takes a little patience!

A good thing about getting better with dealing with Linux in general, I remembered how to 'enable' a service so that it creates a symlink that will start after every reboot! I had Mullvad VPN installed but forgot to configure it properly by enabling the "mullvad-daemon.service". The Garuda Konsole is configured to make pull up commands commonly used together. This jogged my memory pretty quickly, Garuda Linux is going to become my new Ubuntu, something that I loved for so long.

LOL I got used in the habit of using Wireguard configs. It's nice to make things easy on one's self!

Huh, so VLC couldn't play any of my...videos and it was pretty strange that MPV media player worked just fine. Garuda Linux is a strange one, I normally have zero issues with VLC (if I do, they can be fixed by installing packages).

I even checked to see if all the codecs were installed, they were. I didn't find any other codecs that could be installed aside from the ones already on my machine. That was a head scratcher, as other distros VLC tends to work the best.

I just uninstalled VLC and will be using Strawberry Music Player for my songs.

Update, I got the urge to try a new distro, but that initially failed. Oh well, Garuda Linux it is as I got a little tired of openSUSE Tumbleweed, and I was hoping to install Nitrux.

However, it failed due to being unable to write its unique init and xfs file system on my SSD.

I backed up all my stuff so this is a non-issue. Garuda is going to save the day yet again.

Update: I got Garuda Linux installed and it is very nice! Colorful, solid, worked right away without issue with getting it installed on this laptop! I could install everything easily either through the Garuda tool or Octopi.

Wayland is the only display server, I am glad that Garuda Linux believes that Arch can be like this...Freaking hell, it feels so slick. Leveraging the power of Arch without making it a ballache. I do need to do one more restart before getting even more software installed.

Hey anyone running #GarudaLinux - I'm not but two of my friends are, and I have a couple of questions I was hoping could be answered.

1. One of them can't upgrade their system at the moment as librewolf can't resolve the dependency libvpx.so=11-64

2. The Other hasn''t been able use Blender for the last 2 months because Python is incompatible (apparently a function name changed to do with string manipulation)

Any advice on how I can help them fix this?

Since having Plasma and COSMIC on the same machine causes all sorts of issues, I’ve assigned the task of keeping an eye on COSMIC to Hevy.

COSMIC is still missing features I’d like to see, but it’s coming along nicely.

* The artifacts around the windows are coming from the COSMIC Screenshot utility.

One of the nice things with Garuda Mokka is you get some ricing, applications, tools etc. ootb. But all can be adjusted, turned off or even deinstalled quite easily. Everything has been added as separate packages, not meta packages. Which means I can deinstall KDE Connect separately, without any complaints about Plasma Meta being broken. That's great 👍🏻.

The Garuda Mokka spin is a customized version of KDE, using the Catppuccin color palette. Beautiful and of course all goodies that can be expected, like Snapper btrfs snapshots etc. Noice.

Appo is back and better than ever! He was running macOS as a BlueBubbles host, but I never used it, so he sat unused for nearly a year until I brought him back to life with Garuda Linux!

He’s a bedroom PC connected to my TV and stereo HomePod mini pair at the moment. Whatever I can’t play though my AppleTV I can play on Appo and still get stereo sound on the HomePods!

@rklinux #GarudaLinux is my new favorite distro. It’s #Arch, but opinionated and comes with some very nice built-in tools.

I use the #Plasma “Mokka” edition. I was so impressed with its speed and flexibility compared to Fedora that I started installing it on every computer I own. It’s not as friendly as Fedora, but it has some great built-in tools, and I’m at the point now where I can manage things by myself and fix my own mistakes…mostly.
