Fighting the urge to just litter my social media feeds with "vacation photos", but this was absolutely a bucket list destination for me.

  8. Now I have a working app. The table in the first screen capture is compiled into the Teensy. A Tkinter app on my Mac reads it and generates the UI in the second screen capture. All the controls change the sound in real time.

I can make several good drum sounds, and it's just a matter of tweaking them. The reverb sounds like a walkie-talkie in a bucket, though. I may have introduced a bug...

scary, innit? i’ve lived long enough to accumulate a bucket load of anecdotes of how people just “don’t get it”

one instance involved a work mate who emptied the “cold” ash from a coonara heater into a sensible, safe, metal bucket, and put it outside on her back porch.
a full week later, the porch started to burn…

just as swimming lessons have always seemed essential in a country obsessed with beaches, it would seem some sort of #FireSafety information campaign would be useful. Disaster porn might reward the press well enough, but it does nothing to address ignorance

  13. On websites that link to things like
https://www.llewellyn.com/encyclopedia/article/244 (and a lot newer ones that link to ones that link to it)...there's this tale of a psychologist Alan Richardson who conducted a study with basketball players. I think I've even heard of it: you have a control group of players do do nothing, you have a group that practices, and a group that imagines themselves practicing. The legend (and since no one cited their sources beyond mentioning his name, that's effectively what it was) was that the 'imaginers' had just as much, or almost as much success as the 'practicers'.

This turns out to be a real set of studies. And unlike in 2013, where this was locked behind a paywall where even people who were interested in knowing what was in it couldn't access it........scihub gives us access now.
    https://sci-hub.tw/…/doi/abs/10.1080/10671188.1967.10613388…

    1) A huge risk of p hacking . p < 0.05.
    2) Low sample size. N=literally dozens
    3) replicated with diminishing, but positive results. The sort of thing you'd expect to see when someone got lucky with a high p value and then tried to replicated it, and found *something* there
    4) the papers above discuss the outcome in terms of
    * symbolic activity versus motor activity - ie sitting and thinking of chess is different from sitting and thinking of moving your hands and getting a ball in a bucket. Which in turn is different than a complex social problem like 'becoming president of the US'. Generally there's tasks that require thinking about, and having a clear idea of what constitutes a win condition (similar to A* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A*_search_algorithm ) can get you there quicker
    * possible ways that imagined practice could impact the structure of your brain, and the information that is most at hand
    things like that
what it does *definitely not* say is

"situations and opportunities will come your way" if you focus on visualizing your goal alone, that is not something you can "count on", at least based on the particular

Now granted - the above two scihub links are only discussion links of a third paper, which isn't online

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14143283

That might be an interesting read. But even so, the data seems to support exactly what athletes tend to want - a quick way out of working hard at practicing and meditation to still the mind. And one thing that is always available is our desires. It would be *so convenient* if visualizing our desires were enough to obtain them, but it seems like this is not in the cards unless your desires fall into a certain category of things.

eg #mindpower extrapolates incomplete, and inacessible science without a real hard link to its source, and surprise surprise, it took the data beyond what it actually was valid for
  14. CW: very large toad

friends, don't let anyone tell you that animals are dumb.

this ginormous cane toad found its way into my room and into the cats' water dish - apparently the only little pool of water it could find during a recent dry period.

it started coming back night after night.

at one point, i put on my garden gloves, put it in a bucket, and dumped it in my azolla pond outside.

the next day, it was back.

i put the cats' water dish up on a table next to my bed (these toads don't really hop up high).

the next night, i saw it near where the water dish used to be.

that toad was learning, thinking, strategizing, remembering, and being sneaky.

so yea, next time you read some news article that's like "can you believe it?? animals can remember things!!", just shake your head because animals HAVE to be smart and learn and remember where resources are in their environment if they want to survive. and not just resources - where the threats are, etc.

  15. I've #written 384 pages in my #journal so far this year.  My average is ~6.5 pages per day. I expect this will pick up as I go along. I have a lot of writing to do.

This is what I mean by I use my #fountainpens for #writing. I've emptied 6-8 of my pens over the last two weeks.

The reason for all of this writing in a journal? I am doing something of a brain dump. Putting as many things from the past as I can remember down in writing. Many of these memories will later be woven into #fictional #stories that I am working on.

This is the reason that I am writing them manually. I don't want these #memories to be online in any form. I don't want #AI companies using my memories to train their wretched systems.

The best part about this? #Security. These journals are locked in a fireproof safe. When I am done with them, I will shred them with a diamond cut shredder. I will then take the cut up pieces and either put them in a bucket of water and make a slurry out of them, or I will burn them.  They will not be recovered, ever.

  22. Gemstone Beach is about 70km NW of Invercargill, on the road to Te Waewae Bay and Tuatapere. It's famous for its colourful stones. Sapphire and garnet have been found on the beach.

Now a Queenstown dude called Michael Reedy has applied for a 10-year mining permit over 47ha of the beach. Locals are not amused.

"I don’t think one man should have that power over a tourist destination that brings money to our area."

The applicant insists there won't be any diggers or trucks.

"Mr Reedy said it was a non-mechanical operation and he would be walking up and down the beach looking for high-quality sapphires and gemstones.
"It won’t even include a spade. It will be just me and a bucket, walking down the beach."

If that's the case, why does he need an "exclusive" mining permit when he can already remove stones just like everybody else?

    ICED
    (For Renee Good)

    I imagine myself reversing time
    With foreknowledge, the bullets empty
from your limp body and re-enter the barrel
The blood dissipates from the snow
I stand between you and them
I distract you, persuade you to move
You hesitate but my voice is hypnotic
    You turn away to leave
    All is safe

I am the avenger, the dispeller of spells
I swallow the thorns from the sides of men
I eat the hurt from hurt people who hurt people
I suck the marrow from the men who are quick to lose it
    From weak-men who say, F__king b___h!
From hard men who pour oil on fire, and burn
    from the flames inside them
From child-men whose hate seethes like a viper’s breath

    But I am no god
I can’t change any of this
I can only rewind and watch the videos over and over
and with each viewing my stomach twists in more knots
How can humans be so inhumane? Where is Empathy?
How do we return to the path as pilgrims who can feel
the stone in each other’s shoes?
How does my breath blow life back into your lungs
    and yours into mine?
How do we feel the blood flow in each other’s veins?
How do our hearts beat in sync like the unborn child
    in a mother’s womb?

    I reverse time
I make angels in the snow
I melt ice in my mouth
    I blow away the cold
so you can feel safe again

    I want to reverse time
I want you here and now – warm and alive
I want these words to unwrite themselves–
    like it never happened
    like it all never happened

    ~~

    Demilitarized Zone

    When the room goes silent
even the kettle wants to sing.

The clock and its incessant ticking
marks time as if it were a funeral director.

All the walls are listening in, waiting
for some action that they can later
    gossip about while you sleep.

When does a home become a house?
When the walls close in, or the roof blows off?
Or when eggshells replace the tiles?

When is the distance between two hearts
    an artery too far?

Perhaps, a heart is a crumpled crane
and when it’s flattened out, it’s an origami page
you can’t un-crease or rebuild from memory.

A door slams from an unexpected wind–Sorry–
comes the muffled apology from behind the door
which now feels like another wall
    I can’t dematerialize.

    ~~

    Grave Notice

    All cemeteries are cancerous.
The parasitoid and the predatory eat one
    from the inside out.
Your grief has no space in a decaying heart.
My rot is my lot, my last hurrah.
It is an honor to return to Nature. Remember
the life – not the trigger, not the crack of death fire,
not the powder residue on guiltless hands.
    My body is a nobody.
Even if reduced to ash, it fertilizes.
    It serves its purpose.
It is not merely fodder for this weeping.
    It heeded Mother Earth’s calling.
The soul is not a hole in the ground.
My absence is still a presence.
I will always, always be around.

    ~~

    Writing Myself into Existence

    My muse is a fugitive
My thoughts kidnapped, my words the ransom
I can’t unride this carousel of delusions
I am caught in a vortex rotating on a spindle of time
    I am churning, burning, yearning
I am unlearning who I am

Identity is a falsity – you are never who you are
You never get where you’re going, you never arrive
    Know thyself, say the sages
    Who themselves know not themselves
I let go of line, meter, stanza, and rhyme
    I orchestrate my own sentence
All instruments are tuned to lamentation
The universe hums its own hymn, regardless

    Nothing makes sense
    nothing needs to make sense
until it does, until the monotonous buzzing recedes
and I sense a coming becoming, a wave behave,
    the timpani of an epiphany,
    a revelation reveals itself

The wind turns the page, and I am at the bottom
of the well of understanding, drawing myself up
in a bucket of words, liquid and fluid
folding over me and into each other
reshaping the dream into inked reality
    And then it’s done

    ~~

    Flame Blower

No, I will not burn for you!
There are no flames inside me
that can be equated to amóre
    Fire is a limiting metaphor
You really can’t set fire to the rain
Who in the throes of love – or loss –
    would even try?

And no, this girl is not on fire!
    Sati, that banned ritual widow-burning
on the pyres of late husbands,
    is harsh, draconian, oppressive
    So don’t even suggest it
    Terms of endearment shouldn’t sound
    like an inquisition

Let’s get real, calling anyone hot
or smokin’ is such an old, tired cliche
    and, frankly, diminishing
Passion isn’t a blaze, a fiery outburst, an incandescence
    That’s too brief, short-lived, transitory

You are not a candle in the wind,
in the window, or even in the dark
And you can’t incinerate yourself from both ends
    Love isn’t a burning, it’s a flexible churning
It’s gravity and energy multiplied by time
It’s holding space, making space, and growing
    It tolerates flare-ups and meltdowns
It steps up during flame-outs and burnouts

    Love isn’t an arsonist!
It may spark warmth, light up an affection,
fuel a desire, but ultimately it bears witness,
it sits and listens, it has two sturdy – yet weary – shoulders:
one for compassion, the other for kindness

Love isn’t a verb, a verse, or any such verbiage either
It feeds on memory, barters with give-and-take,
    trades on authenticity, grace, truth
When all the fires of loss die out,
love still holds out a hand and says:
Come with me, let’s go out, catch some rays.
    Here’s some sunscreen, though.
    You don’t wanna get burnt.
    Again.

    No. Never again.
