  6. theguardian.com/law/2026/may/0. "In #written #submissions for this week’s #trial, Hugh Southey KC, representing Ansari, said: 'The claimant is not a #member of #Hamas. His only association with the #organisation is his instruction as their solicitor in the de-proscription proceedings lodged in April 2025.'" The #police might as well argue that a suspected criminal's solicitor is a #criminal! Maybe they think so!

  7. #RulesforRadicals” was written at a time of epic social upheaval in the #UnitedStates, and it was read avidly by #VietnamWar #protesters, #feminists, #civilrights #activists and warriors on #poverty. More than half a century later, a new mini-genre of “how-to” #books about #dissent and #activism has emerged, drawing lessons from past #protests for the era of “#NoKings” rallies, #BlackLivesMatter marches and the campus pro-#Palestinian #encampments.

Coincidentally but intriguingly, three of these books were #written by #Jewish #authors who, explicitly or not, are offering advice on resistance drawing on Jewish wisdom, role models and historical precedents.

The three books — “How to Be a Dissident” by #GalBeckerman; the forthcoming “On Courage” by #JuliaAngwin and #AmiFieldsMeyer; and “Be a Refusenik!” by #IzabellaTabarovsky — arrive at a moment of #protest fatigue and #political #polarization.

  8. "As a #Jewish #food #writer and #anthropologist of sorts, #JoanNathan had always been interested in her own family’s history. The “Julia Child of Jewish #cooking” has even #written about it in her recent #autobiography, “My Life in #Recipes.”

But many details about her father’s family, some of whom had perished in the #Holocaust, were scant.

On a recent Thursday morning, #Nathan spent two hours at the Ackman and Ziff Family #Genealogy Institute in #Manhattan, where those secrets would be uncovered as part of a new program called “Histories and Mysteries.” Nathan learned about the fate of a great-aunt, who was confined at #Theresienstadt, and her grandson, who by a circuitous, ultimately tragic path is remembered by #Catholics as a #martyr.

She discovered not only what happened to those relatives, but saw photographs of them and their homes, and read newspaper articles and letters about them."

  9. "A collection of #poems #written by a #Jewish #partisan during #WorldWarII has been preserved and revealed decades after being hidden from both the public and his family, offering a rare personal account of life among Jewish fighters in the forests.

#MordechaiDunitz, born in 1922 in the town of #Zhetel, now in #Belarus, survived the #Holocaust with his sister, Pania, after the two escaped the #Novogrudok ghetto and joined partisan fighters in the #Naliboki Forest. Amid battles and daily struggles for survival, Dunitz found a way to express his thoughts and emotions by #writing #poetry.

The poems were written in secret on thin, fragile scraps of paper and kept out of sight for decades, unknown even to his family."

  10. "[#HowardJacobson] has #written and spoken about how unmoored he has felt from his country, society and fellow citizens during the brutal conflict in #Israel and #Gaza, and has attracted opprobrium for doing so; in #Howl, he explores not simply a feeling of being out of joint with the times, but of experiencing the reawakened fear of #displacement and #violence that #antisemitism provokes. He knows, one suspects, that some #readers will find this utterly enraging, not to say morally repulsive, and he confronts them head on; in Ferdinand Draxler, he creates a man who wholeheartedly believes that #7October has allowed #Jew-hatred to flourish untrammelled, who argues – to anyone who will listen, and even more to those who will not – that it has provided the alibi for #antisemites to do what they wanted to do all along.

Unsurprisingly, Howl is an immensely uncomfortable #novel; it is also, like most of #Jacobson’s work, a comic one."

  16. I've #written 384 pages in my #journal so far this year.  My average is ~6.5 pages per day. I expect this will pick up as I go along. I have a lot of writing to do.

This is what I mean by I use my #fountainpens for #writing. I've emptied 6-8 of my pens over the last two weeks.

The reason for all of this writing in a journal? I am doing something of a brain dump. Putting as many things from the past as I can remember down in writing. Many of these memories will later be woven into #fictional #stories that I am working on.

This is the reason that I am writing them manually. I don't want these #memories to be online in any form. I don't want #AI companies using my memories to train their wretched systems.

The best part about this? #Security. These journals are locked in a fireproof safe. When I am done with them, I will shred them with a diamond cut shredder. I will then take the cut up pieces and either put them in a bucket of water and make a slurry out of them, or I will burn them.  They will not be recovered, ever.

  17. Just watched one of the most recent #RiffTrax - "Champagne and Bullets" (1993).

I don't know anything about the guy behind the original movie, which stinks, but it was a vanity project, written, produced, directed, edited by, starring, and even featuring songs written and sung by him. And he is a fellow who absolutely, positively was not capable of doing any of those things.

My partner brought out one of her favourite sayings in these types of situations: "Oh, to have the confidence of a mediocre white man."

    Makes a good RiffTrax, though.
