I just finished some #proposals yesterday. Last week I submitted a #paper. When I was a #student I worried about acceptance after submission. Now, instead of worrying, I feel relieved and excited to move on to other #projects.
Why the change?
* I'm more #experienced now.
* I saw the #work through, giving a sense of accomplishment.
* My projects are diversified, sustaining my work.I mention this for any struggling #PhDStudent. It gets better.

As a #ComputerScientist, I believe that #automation *can* make things better for us. Unfortunately, it appears that tech companies are giving up on trying to solve actual problems and instead are pushing solutions with problematic implications.
For example: #Facebook has shown me “Try a suggested comment” for posts from friends and family. This is not predictive text to help me type, this is replacing my voice. Am I wrong to want to #KeepMyOwnVoice?

#Twitter just #shadowbanned my PhD advisor Michael L. Nelson. He was covering how the wife of the US Speaker of the House had an anti-#LBTQ+ website and just took it down, but it’s still in #webarchives. Due to the #shadowban, we can view the tweets by URL, but cannot view the whole thread. He’s asked us to #retweet him in hopes of: (1) getting the word out about the shadowban, and (2) overcoming the shadowban (unlikely).

My wife and I just finished season 1 of the #TelevisionSeries “#Kindred” on #Hulu. It is based on a book by Octavia Butler. I really hope it gets renewed. I’d like to see what happens to the characters.

I wonder how many will pay. I'm not being facetious. At this point, I'm not sure enough have left #Twitter to make a dent in its cultural and sociopolitical impact and I'm concerned that competing platforms (e.g., #Mastodon, #Bluesky, #Threads) are losing each #TwitterMigrant back to #BirdSite.

Yesterday at #TPDL2023 David Pride presented “CORE-GPT: Combining Open Access research and large language models for credible, trustworthy question answering”
Rather than #ZeroShot question/answering, Pride’s team combines the #CORE #OpenAccess dataset with #ElasticSearch to create #FewShot prompts that leverage the strength of combining #search results with the #LLM’s (#GPT) #summarization abilities to produce an answer to a user’s question including citations.
