Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent
I belong to a couple of in-person book clubs, and this was the book for my mystery book club this month.
This is a murder mystery set in Dublin. Lydia Fitzsimons is married to a judge, has a son she smothers, and a beautiful home with secrets.
Most of the story is told through Laurence, the son’s point of view. All he wants to do is be allowed to live his own life, but mother gets in the way.
Laurence’s parents live a good life. His father loves his mother so much, he finds it hard to say no to her. Lydia wants a lot and she will do whatever she must to get it.
Laurence eats to feel better. He gets bullied at school and his life is miserable.
When a young woman disappears, it sets off the mystery. Laurence thinks he knows what has happened but how can he be sure until he investigates? It doesn’t help that the love of his life is the sister of the missing woman and that at one time his father was a suspect.
Can Laurence figure it all out before it’s too late?
I loved this psychological thriller. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but I hope it is not the last. This book pulled me in and wouldn’t let go until I got to the last page.
If you love a good thriller that keeps you guessing, you need to read this one.
An interesting little side note was that I bought this book used. Halfway through the book I found a note written in blue ink. It said, “I love you.” Toward the end of the book there was another note in blue ink that said, “I still love you.” I wonder who wrote the note and for whom it was written. What was that all about. This isn’t a romance novel. Let me know what you think.
