  5. HTC Unveils VIVEE: The Pocket-Sized AI Companion with evolving personality

On October 26, 2026, HTC officially introduced VIVEE, a pocket-sized AI companion designed for personalized interaction. Unlike static virtual assistants, VIVEE responds to physical stimuli such as petting, patting, and rotating, developing a unique personality through consistent user engagement. The hardware is notably compact, measuring 60x60x50mm and weighing 114g, featuring an OLED screen that displays various UI expressions. For connectivity, the device supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC, with an IPX4 waterproof rating. To address privacy concerns, the device includes physical switches for the microphone and speaker, and HTC has committed that user data will not be utilized for training AI models. VIVEE starts at a pre-order price of $99.99, approximately 667.7 RMB.#ai #hardware #mobile #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

If I am using a smartphone I usually want to interact with the outside world, therefore depending on external online services usually isn't undesirable and I just wish I could get rid of these annoying warnings.

They train users to not care about those warnings at all, having the opposite effect of what's probably intended.

“This always blows up in our face,” the moderate Liberal tells The Saturday Paper. “There are many reasons, but the main one is that the Brethren are not engaged in day-to-day politics, so they have no feel for what persuades swinging voters and they end up being way too aggressive. Not only does it put people off, it attracts endless media scrutiny.”
The same Liberal source points to the Liberal Party’s internal review of the 2025 campaign, conducted by former Howard government minister Nick Minchin and former NSW state minister Pru Goward, which essentially admitted that party officials felt they had no choice but to rely on Brethren volunteers.
“The ageing of Party members has added to the problem of providing sufficient numbers of booth workers over the years, and some campaigns were grateful for the assistance of volunteers who were also members of the Plymouth Brethren,” Minchin and Goward wrote.
The review also noted “there were divided opinions about the value of having Plymouth Brethren members handing out Liberal Party” how-to-vote cards and recommended better training of all booth workers to ensure clear messaging and consistently appropriate engagement with voters as they approached the polling booth.
“The Liberal Party does not, nor should have, a religious affiliation test. Protestants, Catholics, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu followers supported the Liberal Party,” Minchin and Goward wrote. “It will need further investigation to determine why such exception has been taken to the role of the Plymouth Brethren; no doubt Brethren members themselves are reviewing their involvement.”
Despite the discomfort among moderate Liberals concerning the Brethren’s involvement, Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie says she remains deeply troubled by the hostile questioning of the Brethren’s involvement in the 2025 election campaign, which she says amounts to little more than religious persecution.
“Utterly disgraceful,” McKenzie tells The Saturday Paper this week. “I was absolutely shocked. I sort of logged on as a participating member and I could not believe the line of questioning, not only from teal MPs, from Greens senators, but also from the Labor Party, questioning why this particular church would pray for our country.
“If people of faith, irrespective of which church, synagogue, mosque, temple they worship at, believe in our democracy enough to actually get involved at election time, that should actually be a good thing. People shouldn’t be barred from participating in a free and fair electoral process simply because they are men and women of faith.”
With the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters now set to write its final report, the recommendations of which could lead to the Plymouth Brethren losing its tax-free status, many of the committee’s members are wondering why Bruce and Gareth Hales appeared so disrespectful and evasive in their answers to questions.
“I guess they’re not used to being held accountable,” observes committee chair Jerome Laxale.

  11. I wanted to know whether AI assistants actually read our site, so I grepped the nginx logs for the user agents. The numbers looked encouraging:

    ClaudeBot 1136
    GPTBot 420
    PerplexityBot 356
    Applebot 230
    ChatGPT-User 213
    OAI-SearchBot 196

Then I checked where those requests actually came from, and a third of them were not who they said they were.

The companies publish their IP ranges

This is the part most people do not know exists. Every serious crawler operator publishes the address ranges their bots use, specifically so that you can verify them:

    • openai.com/gptbot.json — the training crawler
    • openai.com/searchbot.json — the one that builds the index ChatGPT searches
    • openai.com/chatgpt-user.json — live fetches when a user's question triggers browsing
    • search.developer.apple.com/applebot.json — Applebot, which serves Spotlight, Siri and Apple Intelligence

Each file is a list of CIDR prefixes. Checking a log line against them is twenty lines of code and no dependencies:

  13. I continue to be very impressed with the free version of Affinity Studio for RAW image development and photo post-processing. Powerful, polished, plentiful features, and easy to use.

I upgraded my desktop computer last month and now can use their Machine Learning tools, such as object selection in the RAW develop studio. Wow! Everything stays local to your machine and no training is done with your data.

Yes, it's not open source, but it is free and you only need an email address to register. Looks like the free version includes everything except advanced AI tools.

As I said, I know nothing about the players here, but I know about ISO process. The national delegation structure means that the process is only as open and fair as the political establishment wants it to be. 20. OsmAnd - Why Offline Search is So Hard
    youtube.com/watch?v=aScKKQvZx3U

A concise and beautifully presented walk through how OsmAnd majorly improved its offline search.

Over the last years they realized that offline search is not really good at finding addresses. This is mainly because it was assumed that all (postal) addresses follow common rules (e.g. town→street→house) which is not the case. They are wildly different across the globe and people type them in various forms (out of order, incomplete, with abbreviations).

After that introduction, I suspected that the solution might just be training some neural network. BUT, it's much cooler...
They are using some clever algorithms where they basically find the matching places for each search word then intersect those sets of places with each other.
Of course it's not *that* easy, so definitely go watch yourself.

The current result is an order of magnitude faster and not even restricted to addresses only.
