  1. It's interesting here... that I now follow all kinds of #philosophers from all over the world (not doing the kind of #philosophy I do (which is #ContinentalPhilosophy), though, but still, interesting) whereas previously I tried to avoid following philosophers -- I wonder if it is because here there is a feeling conversations-conversions are possible?

  2. Philosopher Mary Brenda Hesse

considered the use of #metaphors and #analogies in scientific models.
Instead of obsessing over the justification of scientific knowledge, she highlighted the need to think about its generation. How do scientists develop their ideas about the world and come to discover new things?
The cognitive power of metaphors, in her view, resided in their capacity to create similarity. The use of metaphors is an act of co-creating, not discovering, similarities between a metaphor and its physical target system. Such an act of metaphorical co-creation is inevitably shaped by cultural context.

  3. Philosophers, literary scholars & others skilled in #hermeneutics & similar techniques: where can I find a good, open-source introduction to hermeneutics of suspicion?
My dodgy brain is not at its best today and everything I find that looks useful is paywalled. 🤬

  7. Happy birthday to #philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) who, amongst other things speculated about a teapot orbiting in space.

This lino block print of Russell's Teapot is part of my series of Imaginary Friends of Science of charismatic thought experiments. In this case, the alledged china teapot, in orbit between Earth and Mars is an analogy….

  8. In Buddhism the equinox is known as 'Higan' (彼岸).

Higan translates as 'Other Shore', a reference to the far shore of the 'Sanzu-no-kawa' (三途の川 'River of the 3 Crossings'). Similar to the River Styx in Greek Mythology, the dead would cross the river to reach the afterlife.

  9. We had 3 full days in Kyoto - Day 1: #PhilosophersPath. Day 2: #FushimiInari. Now on the way to Day 3: #Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Once again in one of these magnificent #Japanese trains that looks both like it was made last week, from the condition, and in 1970, from the style.

The woman having a snooze in the #Photo... that people feel safe to sleep on public transport is endlessly endearing.

  10. How about “Domestic Gormenghasts of the Kyoto Urban Fringe” as an exhibition title? This narrow, oatmeal-looking place is on such a narrow strip of land, and appears to have been forgotten by time. I wonder if the area around the #PhilosophersPath is economically distressed, or just home to a lot of very old #Japanese people.

Another western tourist in the #Photo, in sensible shoes, leggings, and with a camera.

  12. "At this very crucial juncture where the long-term stability and existence of our structures is under threat, we will need #philosophers (inside and outside the academy) to envisage alternative ideas for us. This is to engage in what Eric Schliesser calls #philosophicprophecy. Borrowing from Quine, who echoes Midgley, philosophical concepts are, he says “devices for working a manageable structure into the flux of experience.” To engage in philosophical prophecy is to “create a shared horizon for our philosophical future.”

  14. Review: Nightfell – A Deeper Delve

I previously gave a review of the great grimdark RPG Nightfell (made for D&D 5E), but I didn’t go into enough detail. I hope to rectify that here and delve deeper into what this setting offers.

Interested in a game with rules on lunar phases with new classes and races in a world where the sun has died and the moonlit world rules? This is it!

  15. Review: Nightfell

I recently discovered and became enamored with a grimdark setting for D&D 5E called Nightfell. So much 5E material ends up looking alike both in rules and art style, but Nightfell is a game that attempts to do something new with the 5E rules and presents a stunning dark fantasy look, which I find very refreshing!
