'Sange' (散華) is a ritual offering of flowers. Early each morning at Hōnen-in 25 flowers (commonly camellia) are dedicated to a statue of Amida carved by Genshin (源信 942-1017).
The flowers represent the 25 bodhisattva who help Amida take the souls of the dead to paradise. -
💔🙏AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER👑🗡️
Banbukyō-ji (萬無教寺 aka Manmukyō-ji) sits on the Philosopher's Path beneath Zenki-san (善気山).
Thanks to its links to Hōnen, it is better known as Hōnen-in (法然院), and because of the many camellia that grow here it's nicknamed Tsubaki-no-dera (椿の寺).

Nishida Kitarō's (西田幾多郎 1870-1945) famous poem is immortalized in stone on the path. It is an angry retort to blind nationalism.
people are people,
and I will be myself.
regardless,
the path I follow
I will follow on…

Towards the middle of April parts of the canal beside the Philosopher's Path (哲学の道) become a river of petals.
The phrases 'hana-no-ukibashi' (花の浮橋 'floating bridge of flowers') and 'hanaikada' (花筏 'flower raft') both describe water thick with petals. -

In Buddhism the equinox is known as 'Higan' (彼岸).
Higan translates as 'Other Shore', a reference to the far shore of the 'Sanzu-no-kawa' (三途の川 'River of the 3 Crossings'). Similar to the River Styx in Greek Mythology, the dead would cross the river to reach the afterlife.

👣🗾SCATTERING EARTH🤏⛰️
For 25 years Kurita Kōichi (栗田宏一) has walked the length and breadth of Japan, gathering small samples of soil from each settlement (whether hamlet, village, town or city) he passes through.
At Hōnen-in (法然院) he made a dedication of his life's work.

'Ao-onigiri' (青おにぎり) is a stone's throw from the Philosopher's Path.
The small store was quite recently brought to the attention of a global audience thanks to the hit Netflix show "Waffles + Mochi!", which explores food from around the world.#Kyoto #Japan #Aoonigiri #青おにぎり #京都 #onigiri #おにぎり #PhilosophersPath

👹🍚THE OGRE & THE ONIGIRI👏🍙
Strong gusts put paid to Nao-chan's plans for a soothing tea ceremony beneath the cherry trees along the Philosopher's Path (哲学の道), so she packed her traveling tea kit and headed instead to one of Kyōto's best onigiri eateries for lunch🙌

A number of shrines and temples sit close to the Philosopher's Path. Here's a previous thread all about Ōtoyo-jinja (大豊神社), one of my favourites🐁⛩️🧵⬇️

👣THE PHILOSOPHER'S BLOSSOMS🌸
The Path of Philosophy runs between Nanzen-ji and Ginkaku-ji.
It came to prominence after the philosophers and Kyōto University professors Nishida Kitarō (西田幾多郎 1870-1945) and Tanabe Hajime (田辺元 1885-1962) used the trail as an exercise route.#PhilosophersPath #PhilosophersWalk #Kyoto #Japan #sakura #cherryblossoms #桜 #京都 #哲学の道

We had 3 full days in Kyoto - Day 1: #PhilosophersPath. Day 2: #FushimiInari. Now on the way to Day 3: #Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Once again in one of these magnificent #Japanese trains that looks both like it was made last week, from the condition, and in 1970, from the style.
The woman having a snooze in the #Photo... that people feel safe to sleep on public transport is endlessly endearing.

Another #Photo of #Japanese drains after leaving the #PhilosophersPath. I just can't get over how much I love the constant sound of running water that I encountered in Japan. Everywhere you go, water, and the management of water abounds. It makes me realise that despite living in the subtropics, a metre above sea level in a river delta, running water isn't a feature of where I live.

Another #Photo of old #Japanese drainage and water infrastructure. Of course this is the #PhilosophersPath so it's not just any old infrastructure. The arm-length koi swimming along in it were a fun surprise, given it's not a wild river.

How about “Domestic Gormenghasts of the Kyoto Urban Fringe” as an exhibition title? This narrow, oatmeal-looking place is on such a narrow strip of land, and appears to have been forgotten by time. I wonder if the area around the #PhilosophersPath is economically distressed, or just home to a lot of very old #Japanese people.
Another western tourist in the #Photo, in sensible shoes, leggings, and with a camera.

A small #Japanese building in the grounds of Honen-in Temple, off the #PhilosophersPath.
Using a short depth of field, and centre-converging perspective can create an interesting sense of movement and gravity, drawing one toward the centre of the #Photo.
