  1. The scenery of the famous sightseeing spot Arashi-yama in Kyoto, reproduced with LEGO and displayed at Umeda Station. The caption says 50,000 pieces are used for the diolama, and it took 400 hours to finish this work.
Unryu-zu (雲竜図, lit.: picture of crowd and dragon, based on the ink paintings work in 18th century by Soga Shouhaku 曾我蕭白, housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) also needed 150,000 blocks and 800 hours.

  2. #Walking the Okōchi Sansō #Garden, #Arashiyama, #Kyoto, #Japan. The place is absolutely beautiful, but considering its size, the length of the trail, and all the elevation changes, it felt more like a hike than a garden stroll. 😄

  3. A stroll through Sagano's famous bamboo (short and sweet to make it look as if it was peaceful and empty😅).

  4. The cherry blossom viewing season is at its peak in Arashiyama (嵐山), the area of Kyōto with preserved nature and tradition. Sakura, the bamboo forest, the river and Moon-Crossing Bridge, the first early-blossoming azaleas, and the little-known lookout for those who know and hike up that far, are all here for your viewing pleasure.

  5. Towering bamboo reaching endlessly toward the sky Walking through the Arashiyama bamboo grove in Kyoto feels almost otherworldly. As the wind moves through the forest, the stalks sway softly, creating a quiet natural rhythm. #Scape #Kyoto #Arashiyama #Japan #BambooForest #photography

  6. Happy New Year! Down coats keep the frolickers warm during these cold January days in Arashiyama (京都の嵐山), a wide open area of Kyōto with a big river and the legendary Moon Crossing Bridge (渡月橋). People were also there 😉 , but many varieties of ducks and other birds were the stars. The calendar was given to me by an Imperial family member who leads the largest ikebana (flower arranging) organization in Japan (池坊の生け花カレンダー).

  7. 😇THE TEMPLE OF THE 2 BUDDHAS😇

Nison-in (二尊院) is named after its two statues: Shaka Nyorai (釈迦如来 Buddha) blesses the world's newborns, and Amida Nyorai (阿弥陀如来) greets the dead.
It's unusual for a temple to have two principal images.

  8. One of the loveliest features of the hut is a small box, 'tōku-bako' (投句箱), for posting your poems...keeping the original purpose of the thatched cottage alive.

  9. Nearby Tenryū-ji (天龍寺 'Temple of the Heavenly Dragon') was completed in 1345 for the 7th anniversary of Emperor Go-Daigo's death. Ashikaga Takauji (足利尊氏 1305-1358) settled on the name after hearing of his brother's dream.

  10. At the plaza's heart is a small fountain and dragon sculpture, inspired by the golden creature Ashikaga Tadayoshi (足利直義 1306-1352) saw emerging from the Ōi River (大堰川) in a dream.

  12. A straw 'mino' raincoat (蓑) hangs beside the door at 'Rakushisha' (落柿舎), indicating that the host is home.

The small cottage was home to Mukai Kyorai (向井去来 1651-1704), chief disciple of Matsuo Bashō. It was here that Bashō composed 'Saga Nikki' (嵯峨日記) in 1691.

  13. The rain goes by many names at this time of year...

🌧️Saikau (催花雨) = spring rain that hastens the blooming of flowers
    🌧️Kokū (穀雨 April 20ish) = "grain rain"
🌧️Zuiu (瑞雨) = rain that helps grain crops sprout
🌧️Kanu (甘雨) = rain that falls at the right time to moisten plants

  15. telling of autumn,
    the scent of
    kinmokusei
    秋告げる香りはなってキンモクセ
    -Saeko Takada (高田さえこ).

As autumn deepens the fragrance of sweet osmanthus, harbinger of Kyōto's finest season, gently hangs in the air.

  16. The river upstream of Togetsukyō is called the Ōi-gawa and downstream the Katsura-gawa. It is known as the Hozu-gawa around the Kameoka and retains this name until it reaches Arashiyama (嵐山).

  17. 🌙THE MOON CROSSING BRIDGE🌉

Blossoms at Arashiyama's (嵐山) 180m long Togetsukyō Bridge (渡月橋).

It is said that one night, glancing across the Ōi River (大堰川) from the Kameyama Palace (亀山殿), Emperor Kameyama (亀山天皇 1249-1305) was bemused by an odd illusion...

  18. On the ruins of Shōtoku's hermitage the great Buddhist priest Gyōki (行基 668-749), sponsored by Emperor Shōmu (聖武天皇), established Saihō-ji (西方寺). Enshrining Amida, the Hossō sect temple was named after 'Saihō Jōdo' (西方浄土), the Bodhisattva's 'Western Paradise'.

  19. Over 120 species of moss grow like an unbroken carpet of green across much of Saihō-ji's garden.

In order to protect this mossy paradise, since 1977 guests need to apply for admission. Before entering the garden, visitors first hand copy a sutra excerpt (写経 'shakyō').

  20. Although moss was never really a great consideration for the creators of Saihō-ji's (西芳寺) gardens, ruination and a series of devastating floods by chance created Japan's greatest moss garden.

So much so that the temple is better known as 'Koke-dera'.

  21. It takes three men to navigate each flat-bottomed boat.
Each team takes a turn at the rudder, oar and a pole (used to guide the boat away from rocks and push it clear of the more dangerous parts of the river).

  22. 🐚SHELL GAME🎴

To while away those rainy afternoons...a game of 'kai-awase' (貝合わせ).
Traditional or seasonal scenes are painted in elaborate detail on the inside of shells. The aim of the game is to find pairs amongst the shells (each half related in some way).

  23. even if it does not rain
they plant on bamboo planting day-
    a mino-raincoat and a rain-hat
    降らずとも 竹植る日は 蓑と笠
    -Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉 1644-94).

It was believed that bamboo planted on the 13th day of the 5th month would flourish. In China this day was known as 'Chikusuijitsu' (竹酔日).

  24. 🎋BRILLIANT BAMBOO🎍

The bamboo groves of Sagano (嵯峨野竹林の道) may be world famous, but there are many -equally gorgeous- places to see bamboo forests in and around Kyōto.

Mukō (向日市), a short train ride from the city, has a whole park dedicated to bamboo!
