M.C. Escher and CP Violation

I’ve had these pictures for quite a while and can’t remember where I got them from, but I used to show them in my lectures on Theoretical Particle Physics when I was in Nottingham to illustrate CP-violation and used them in this morning’s lecture at Maynooth.

The following picture by M.C. Escher is called Day and Night:

If you look at it you can see two kinds of symmetry emerging. One is a kind of reflection symmetry about a vertical axis drawn through the centre of the picture that applies to shapes but not to colour. The other is between black and white. But it is obvious that the picture doesn’t display these symmetries separately: to get a picture unchanged from the original you would have to do the mirror reflection and change black to white (and vice-versa).

The mirror reflection in the image can be taken to represent parity (P). Strictly speaking parity refers to a reflection through the origin in 3D rather than a mirror reflection, but it’s just for illustration. We know that a parity symmetry is violated in weak interactions just as it is in the picture.

The other possible symmetry, between black and white can be taken to represent charge-conjugation (C), the operation that converts particles into anti-particles and vice-versa.

While P is not an exact symmetry of weak interactions, it was long thought that the combination of C and P (CP) would be. Actually it isn’t. The story of the discovery of CP-violation is fascinating but I don’t have time to go into it here. It suffices to say that the Escher print also displays CP violation.

First lets do `C’, i.e. convert black to white and vice-versa. The result is:

Now reflect about the vertical mid-line to illustrate `P’:

If `CP’ were an exact symmetry then that image would be identical to the original, which I reproduce here:

You can see, however, that while some elements of the picture do look the same after this combined operation (e.g. the birds), others (e.g. the buildings at the bottom) do not. Although CP is not an exact symmetry of this picture, it is almost (just like it is in particle physics).

Switched to the 60mm Macro lens, which I don't shoot with often enough, to get a final #Photo as the last rays of the sun illuminated the summit of #Fujisan. A moment of #Japanese industrialised modernity captured in #Urban #Landscape, and perhaps a little tribute to Hokusai.

Heading back to #Tokyo from #Himeji, we stopped along the way to see #Fujisan. This from the balcony of an empty Korean restaurant. There's a concept in contemporary photography - the #PostmodernSublime, which holds that the industrialised world is so overwhelming in scale, as to provoke the same terror the natural world inspired in the German Romanticists. I feel like I came close to that with this #Industrial #Landscape.

You never know if the degree of construction you see in a town you visit is gradual renewal, or a wholesale remaking of the place. Are you witness to the serene continuity, or the end of history? This #Photo looks like I had the focus really dialled in on the could-be-anywhere apartment building, rather than the #Japanese two-story in the centre. I think it's because of how lit the apartment is - the way it pops from the dark sky.

Another “worth the trip to get it" #Photo, featuring the ubiquitous #Japanese lantern. Himeji has enough grit to be interesting to an #UrbanLandscape photographer, but feels so safe & deserted at night, that these sorts of shots, with long exposures, are readily available. I love the way the lantern floods the far wall with red, then the shadow of the bikes in yellow light on the wall, and finally the blue-white in the distance.

Same day, new city - Himeji, where we travelled to see one of the most amazing castles in the word - and its not the beautiful, white, 400 year old traditional #Japanese UNESCO world heritage site. This #Photo reveals a clever #Architecture moment - angling the glass facade to reflect the sky. It looks like a Great Wave - and I imagine would make an interesting subject for a modern Hokusai.

A single person grabbed mid-stride for this #Photo. I think part of what makes #Japanese #Urbanism feel so different from where I live, is the lack of footpaths - and it's not because everything is grassy nature-strips. It's just the whole "walk in the narrow streets" thing, that has an almost medieval feel to it. As always, the ordered chaos of the city's electrical nervous system, running riot overhead.

A #Photo depicting what looks to be the effect of weather on a traditional wooden #Japanese building. Presumably, this is from water on the timber, and the light areas are where the eaves and sills are keeping the rain off. Once again, the delightful riot of architectural styles and technological ages visible in Japan - it's like overlaid chronological strata in the one location.

I stopped for this #Photo when I noticed the multi-story place in the background, illuminated like a #Japanese lantern, and stepped like a pagoda. The more I looked, the more it came together. The reflection on the water, the curving road into the distance - a sentimental, picturesque quality. Then, the armco railing, chainlink fence, electrical infrastructure & pylons, modernist architecture on both sides - a thrilling discordance.

Impromptu #Photo experiment with #LongExposure. A beautiful little #Japanese building, so thin as to be almost two dimensional. A fun aspect of these sort of exposures is how some objects are blurred, and some crisp, depending on how susceptible they are to breeze.

At the end of the day in #Arashiyama walking back towards the station, and looking for somewhere to have dinner, we found the ultimate #Cat shop. This #Photo is probably one of the best results from our #Japanese trip.

I had trouble passing up shooting this adorable, tiny purveyor of crunchy treats.

Getting a good #Photo in #Arashiyama is difficult - the crowds, the deep shadows, and the bright sky all conspire to limit what you can do. All the photos you see online are from 4 to 5 o’clock in the morning. When you actually go there, it's wall to wall tourists, like most famous #Japanese tourist destinations.

Definitely worth seeing, though.

We had 3 full days in Kyoto - Day 1: #PhilosophersPath. Day 2: #FushimiInari. Now on the way to Day 3: #Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Once again in one of these magnificent #Japanese trains that looks both like it was made last week, from the condition, and in 1970, from the style.

The woman having a snooze in the #Photo... that people feel safe to sleep on public transport is endlessly endearing.
