  1. In my latest paper, I develop a comparative study of Iris Murdoch’s moral philosophy through the lens of phenomenology, Platonic ethics, and critiques of modern selfhood. The essay argues that morality begins in perception, where clear vision becomes the foundation of justice and love.

  5. “The #novelist #IrisMurdoch, whose lengthy, involved, brilliant #novels are probably the kind of thing most people don’t read any more, understood #attention better than most.” Well, I know some people who still read her. Otherwise this piece on our #attentiondeficit by #MarkKingwell is very good.

  7. The Conversation: How I found an unexpected connection to science in the works of Iris Murdoch – by a molecular biophysicist. “So far, I’ve used ten out of Murdoch’s 26 novels to illustrate topics as broad as alcoholism and its effect on the liver, sex hormone signalling, evolution, molecular crowding and electron microscopy.”

  8. Ah, Aeon Essays strikes again with a piece that’s 3,100 words long but can be summarized as "Love, not rules, because... reasons." 💤 Apparently, Iris Murdoch’s #philosophy is all about ignoring our massive egos, but who has time for that when there are so many rules to break? 🍿

  9. This very good piece on the #moral #philosophy of #IrisMurdoch (linked to below) makes me feel guilty about booting one of her #books off my most notable books I read in 2024 list in my recent mea culpa re that list - linked to here: doncurren.blogspot.com/2025/08/mid-...

  16. Thinking of writing up my talk on Colours in #IrisMurdoch but wondering where to put it, then I remembered I’ve a Pika account (pika.page) and I’ve not checked in on dev progress since Christmas! Will add to my to-do list 😀

  17. I’m at the #IrisMurdoch conference, running around looking for an HDMI lead so I can do my talk on #IrisMurdoch and colours! #Chichester

  27. "For Murdoch, the most crucial moral virtue was a kind of attentiveness to detail, a wise, trained capacity for vision, which could see what was really going on in a situation and respond accordingly. The sort of psychological insight and attentiveness to detail necessary for writing fiction was also, for Murdoch, what enables a person to live a morally good life."

  28. CW: war, philosophy

During intense #bombing raids, I hide in the corridor of my apartment. Two of my friends (both #philosophers) hide in the bathroom. I always think about #IrisMurdoch and #PhilippaFoot that found shelter in the bathtub under the stairs. History doesn’t repeat, but it surely rhymes. I am lucky to be able to be writing this post and some random essay. But I still find my thoughts coming back to Iris and Philippa. What did they talk about in London during WWII?..

  29. #LaurenceSterne (along with the likes of #IrisMurdoch) disprove the notion there's no such thing as a philosophical novel in English. "Tristram Shandy" plays with the philosophical ideas of Locke.

And more, as the exploration/adaptation of "Tristram Shandy", "A cock and bull story" suggests (1:24) youtu.be/wXzuUJZuqUI
