Malva subovata, the #seamallow, is a species of flowering plant in the family Malvaceae, native to the shores of the western and central Mediterranean.
These flower profusely. I recall them years ago when I visited along the coastline of their natural habitat.
This beautiful, but sparse specimen in #caulfieldsouth #Australia, gives just enough to illustrate its flowering beauty.

Coda
There's little in taking or giving,
There's little in water or wine;
This living, this living, this living
was never a project of mine.
Oh, hard is the struggle, and sparse is
The gain of the one at the top,
For art is a form of catharsis,
And love is a permanent flop,
And work is the province of cattle,
And rest's for a clam in a shell,
So I'm thinking of throwing the battle--
Would you kindly direct me to hell?-- Dorothy Parker

ProfDJ's killer cuts for your streaming shuffle, No.95
Stretch. Why Did You Do It
Written in response to a music business 'betrayal' Stretch's only hit single is a great bit of rock-funk. Its a driving funk rhythm with a great sparse production including some great horn playing and backing its signature gravelly vocals. Its a bit like a sort of mutant Average White Band, which they never managed to repeat (perhaps they poured all the outrage into this one song?)

The Unequal Diffusion of Honesty and Dishonesty in Workplace Networks https://d.repec.org/n?u=RePEc:hal:journl:hal-05214954&r=&r=soc
"… dishonest behavior diffuses while honest behavior does not.
The diffusion of dishonest behavior is best explained by information transmission
… screening for #honesty can be effective in high-turnover environments with sparse networks. While high turnover has been shown to negatively affect firms, this finding contributes to a growing body of evidence suggesting that it may also have positive effects, preventing the #moralDecay that may occur with longer tenure."

Is anyone using #loadbalancers in their #homelab or is it all reverse proxies? Looking for something to do TLS termination and, ideally, make highly available. I tried doing this with #caddy and ehh it's not really working how I want to. I also think I didn't configure it correctly. Documentation is a little sparse.

C. Li et al., "SALSA PICANTE: a machine learning attack on LWE with binary secrets"¹
The Learning With Errors (LWE) problem is one of the major hard problems in post-quantum cryptography. For example, 1) the only Key Exchange Mechanism KEM standardized by NIST [14] is based on LWE; and 2) current publicly available Homomorphic Encryption (HE) libraries are based on LWE. NIST KEM schemes use random secrets, but homomorphic encryption schemes use binary or ternary secrets, for efficiency reasons. In particular, sparse binary secrets have been proposed, but not standardized [2], for HE.
Prior work SALSA [49] demonstrated a new machine learning attack on sparse binary secrets for the LWE problem in small dimensions (up to n = 128) and low Hamming weights (up to h = 4). However, this attack assumed access to millions of LWE samples, and was not scaled to higher Hamming weights or dimensions.
Our attack, PICANTE, reduces the number of samples required to just m = 4n samples. Moreover, it can recover secrets with much larger dimensions (up to 350) and Hamming weights (roughly n/10, or h = 33 for n = 300). To achieve this, we introduce a preprocessing step which allows us to generate the training data from a linear number of samples and changes the distribution of the training data to improve transformer training. We also improve the distinguisher/secret recovery methods of SALSA and introduce a novel cross-attention recovery mechanism which allows us to read-off the secret directly from the trained models.#ResearchPapers #IACR #LWE #Cryptanalysis

I just got an email from BookBrush this morning, and it contained a survey about interest in creating AI narrated #audiobooks with them if I would paid a one-time fee of $999 USD to join that service. Of course my first thought was what about the #narrators? What about quality? And a number of other things. I did some research and I’m even more concerned, and of course, the email was sparse in details. While it’s tempting as a #SelfPublished author, I still care about the people it effects. The narrators and the authors. Am I being too paranoid about this or is the appropriate reaction? Who wants to discuss? #WritersofMastodon #SelfPublishing

@enigmatico Today's browsers are application engines and effectively their own operating systems.
My view is that rather than declare a new start on the same goal, we need to change the goal.
A web browser that focuses specifically on content, rendering that to the user's interests, not the author's/publisher's, and hooking to content management tools for the user (supporting research and projects) would be a better goal.
Gemini is one such project, though I think it's a little too sparse. But it's the right general idea.

Can we please stop making these sorts of generalizations and categorical declarations, based on no experience?
Where I live, electric cars are simply not practical for many uses for half the year, simply because of the extreme climate and sparse population. There are trips I do or have done regularly which simply cannot be done in a BEV. Some of these trips aren't even practical when it's *not* -40C out.
I'm not against BEVs, but I'm also aware that there are use cases that they do not fit, because others' situations and environments are different from yours.

Listening to this Annahstasia record and WOW. Was on my to-listen list based on what I'd heard so far, saw it got BNM'd on Pitchfork and so thought I'd throw it on this morning.
Superb, YES, more of this please.
Quieter, almost folk-ish record with some strikingly sparse passages. Her voice is just beautiful --- I'm having trouble thinking of a 'sounds like X' reference. (Almost a bit of Tracy Chapman?)
Working with folks who work with #MosesSumney, #CassandraJenkins, and that comes through here in a good way.
Beautiful performance from #Obongjayar.
Again, her voice!!!
Here's the opening tune, definitely a stand-out and what a way to open a record:

E pensare che, a un certo punto della sua vita, andato pressoché fallito e quasi dimenticato dal cinema che stava prendendo una forma più narrativa, decise di distruggere tutte le sue opere. Così, quelle giunte sino a noi vengono dal recupero delle pellicole sparse nelle varie cineteche del mondo.

Not the first one talking about it, but yesterday #LetsEncrypt announced to end the #OCSP service - a proposed standard to check the revocation status of #TLS certificates. The service is terminated in favor of certificate revocation lists (#CRL). The latter one was taught during my university degree in #cybersecurity as the recommended solution - yet adoption was sparse back 2 years ago.
My take on this is that in practice few entities, services and software will be affected. The one's who will be affected are probably those with lesser-known and/or slightly exotic setups. Happy to be proven wrong by people who are more familiar with the matter than I am.
Read up on the announcement of Let's Encrypt.

OK, I have installed a self-hosted Wallabag instance. The install documentation is severely lacking, specifically for shared-hosting. Not sure if this is intentional, so you buy their paid plans. No detailed info on configs etc., very sparse. But I got through it. I can confirm it works, the extension setup is weird as well. Let's see if I will keep using it.

NOAA shows clear global warming trends over the past 58 years based on radiosonde data https://climatefeedback.org/claimreview/noaa-shows-clear-global-warming-trends-over-the-past-58-years-based-on-radiosonde-data/
Fact checker #ClimateFeedback asked me & 2 colleagues to review a conspiracy Facebook meme. Verdict: "inaccurate".
Even if weather balloons had not shown a trend that would be no biggy. #GlobalWarming is about surface warming, not upper air warming. The sparse radiosonde network using one-use instruments is a much less accurate way to estimate warming than the station record.
