  15. Cory Doctorow, a fellow #Canadian, writes a lot of interesting stuff. I agree with his positions on many things, but not all. For example, I'm about ten thousand percent behind his opposition to anti-circumvention laws; I was one of the thousands of Canadians who wrote to the government opposing the introduction of the law many years ago.

However, his blog on Thursday, staking out the position that opposition to "AI" (LLM) is just geeky #purity culture is somewhere between "flat-out wrong" and "disingenuous at best".

My position against #LLM #slop everywhere is both because of #ethical #concerns and practical ones. There does not exist an LLM right now that was built and trained ethically; they are all statistical plagiarism machines, and speaking as someone whose #prose and #code has been plagiarized by every single one of them, that pisses me off, royally.

That's a show-stopper for me, but even if it wasn't, the #practical concerns - that the output is #untrustworthy, that the #references can't be checked, that the #code is #insecure and #unmaintainable, that the #licensing status is unclear, that it's a #copyright violation - are *also* enough to rule out #LLMs at present.

He then presents a #strawman argument - all tech is fruit of the poisoned tree, the #transistor was invented by a racist, etc. But William Shockley is not designing or manufacturing any of the transistors / #ICs I use today.

    So, @doctorow - I gotta say I disagree. And that's fine.

  16. A quotation from Franklin Roosevelt

To accomplish almost anything worthwhile, it is necessary to compromise between the ideal and the practical.

  17. All young #CS and #IT practitioners should study, in-depth, at least the following #programming paradigms and pillar languages:

    Imperative:
    • Mechanical—Forth
    • Procedural—C
    • Objective—Smalltalk

    Declarative:
    • Functional—ML
    • Relational—SQL
    • Logical—Prolog

    Theoretic:
    • Computability—𝜆-Calculus
    • Polymorphic—Hindley-Milner
    • Dependent—Martin-Löf

The above is only "my" short-list. Every experienced programmer has "his" short-list of favourites. Regardless, dedicating oneself to the study of one such short-list would equip a young technologist with both practical and theoretical foundations for the rest of his career—provided he does not switch into the MBA lane, upon the first opportunity.

There is a caveat, though. Each of the above subjects stands atop decades of #theoretical research and #practical advances in #computing. For example, Forth, perhaps the simplest one of the lot, could be viewed as a programmer-readable summary of computing history, from von Neumann's seminal paper (1945) at least up to ANSI Forth (1994). And Martin-Löf intuitionistic type theory (1972), arguably the most complex of the lot, was created with the aim to serve as a new foundation of mathematics, possibly reaching back to Euclid. Dependent type theory, even after more than half-a-century, is still a vibrant (HoTT, as it were) research area.

It is plain to see that "mastery" of computing is an endeavour that demands more than life-and-a-half of dedication. So, none of us are true masters thereof. Indeed, for most of us, just to become barely competent in this field requires a careerlong dedication. Hence, the admonition against switching lanes.

Oh and, #practice maybe careerlong, but #learning is lifelong.

  18. We respect builds prioritizing function over form. Reliable starting, confident handling, sufficient range - practical considerations matter when civilization fades behind you.
Share this reminder when cosmetic perfection tempts over mechanical reliability. Beauty means nothing without capability.
Do you build for the garage or the highway? Different purposes require completely different approaches.

  19. On the Benefit of Using Trains Instead of Cars

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

On Sunday I took the car rather than the train. This allowed me to wake up slightly later, and to drive up to the meeting point within an hour. By train I would have had a half hour walk, followed by a two hour train ride. On the way back it was meant to take an hour and ten minutes but didn't, because of a crash on the A1. I didn't see any news about it so I don't think it was a bad crash. It did however block the motorway. A drive that should have taken an hour then took two hours.

I like to take the train. It's intuitive. It's comfortable. It's social. It's relaxing. I took the car because I thought it would be more convenient. It was, but for the person that had to get back as fast as possible to catch a plane.

Without the car that person would have had to wait an extra half hour to an hour, and then another two hours on trains. By having the car I could drive spontaneously with most of the hiking group. The plan was to head to Nyon, to drop everyone off, in order for them to get to Geneva. In the end, due to the traffic jam we re-routed via Allaman, and then Rolle, and they took the train from Rolle. With a car you can leap frog segments of a train journey.

I think the person made it back with time to pack, shower, and get to the airport comfortably. I don't know because there was no follow up. It doesn't bother me in the least. The person seemed worried about getting home in town so I offered to drive her part of the way. If I had had that option on Saturday I probably would not have rushed for the train. I would have been happy to hitch a ride to Gland, and the train from there.

Travel time + Interval Between Trains

Saturday, and Sunday the journeys were two hours, but the train wait could be three hours. From the moment you finish a hike to the moment you get home can be three and a half hours, if I include my half hour walk.

If it wasn't for the car crash and traffic jams then the car would have taken an hour ten rather than almost two hours. With the car crash, and traffic jam, with Sunday afternoon congestion the car was not faster, for me. It was faster for those that had the freedom to catch a train from a convenient train station. The moral, for me, is that on a Sunday afternoon, with congestion, trains are faster.

The paradox is that if a train is empty, or full, it goes at the same speed, but when an empty, or full, makes a huge difference. It makes sense to fill trains to capacity. It's absurd to fill motorways to capacity. That's why using trains when hiking is fantastic. It also provides us with the flexibility to do point to point hikes, rather than loops.

    Some Exceptions

Nyon to Ste-Croix is convenient train. So is Nyon to Les Paccots, and Gruyères to Nyon. Nyon to Jaun too is very convenient. In contrast Nyon to Auberge communale de Pont-de-Nant, Route du Pont-de-Nant 10, 1880 Plans-sur-Bex is not convenient by train and bus, unless you start the hike at the bus stop, rather than the restaurant.

When I was looking at logistics from the Vue Des Alpes I saw that it makes sense to walk down to the nearby train station, four kilometres away. By doing this you have a train every hour, rather than every two to three hours.

    Conclusion

If it wasn't for a van catching fire near Céligny the motorway would have been fluid. It's because of this accident that the advantage of taking the car was negated. Having said that, rush hour traffic on a Sunday evening is normal, so the gains you have in the morning are negated in the evening. This explains why the motorway, lake road and vineyard roads were blocked. This explains why it made sense to drop people off in Rolle, to catch their train. On Saturday I will almost certainly take the train as it's a linear hike and simplifies logistics.

  20. The Concept Of Indigenous GIS
    --
Reading a paper (alturl.com/8wte5), they used the specific term ‘Indigenous GIS’ – and I found this intriguing!
As I read it, spatial data collection and analysis was done with a focus on how a tribe or social group might ‘see’ the data, including spatiotemporal....
I look forward to finding out more about what others are working on! – so PLEASE feel free to share any examples that you might have…

  23. @djb (Daniel J. Bernstein) tooted about a new blog post[1] he published. It's here:
    blog.cr.yp.to/20250118-flight.

It's interesting. He's a #mathematician and software guy that in more recent years has been known mostly for his work in #cryptography, #theoretical and #practical. You're probably using his #Curve25519 every day in your #communications.

    I'm not a mathematician (by a long shot), but it's written in a pretty accessible manner - it's not #formulae and #turgid academic #prose.

The central point he's getting at, by my possibly-mistaken understanding of it, is that current "common sense" about when attacks against pre-quantum cryptography like #RSA (and therefore when post-quantum cryptography becomes critical) are badly mistaken - based on bad assumptions about how attacks work, how they're implemented, and on badly #extrapolating from those bad assumptions using logic that doesn't actually represent the way attacks are developed and become practical.

TL;DR is something along the lines of "#quantum cryptographic attacks against RSA will be practical sooner than most people think, and you should be deploying quantum-resistant cryptography now, not later".

It's worth reading if you're at all interested in #crypto and #security stuff.

He also mentions a project he's involved in that has been discussed separately, transparent post-quantum tunnelling for unmodified #server and #client #software. Link in post.

  24. CW: #Commercialisation ... of #TV 📺 #Internet 🌐 (Adverts in Everything)

    #Commercialisation ...of #TV 📺 #Internet 🌐 ...and Earth 🌎
    (and Adverts in Everything!)

Like the diluting of what was once pure, it then gets watered down or advert-packed to keep us watching... (... adverts).

That's what this is about mainly:

" #Maximising " things and cashing it in towards their death (inevitably pushing and killing things after helping feed or creat them - steady profiting more and more as time goes on).

THE REST BELOW EXPANDS ON THAT - ABOVE IS THE MAIN

    ⏺️ DISCLAIMER 1
While everything was "pure" before (or geeky or niche or even rarely practices) was always going to do bigger things the more interest there was building for it. So I accept even the Internet itself from modems and BBS Bulletin board system to broadband you people enjoy (I'm almost still on modems lol!) means that commercialisation was inevitable and mostly needed EVEN THOUGH the TONS of money and $tate infrastructure is charging planet and us PLENTY for the broadband-drug streaming to us per month which companies can increase price or adverts into our addiction-filled lives - so adverts are naturally with that... [shrug] ...especially as they test and find tolerance levels...

    ⏺️ ❓ What's your golden period? ❓
"THE" golden period I think of is the 2000's as we had the best of everything, early broadband or even just before with personally crafted crappy custom HTML sites, ecologic internet (telephone lines and modem) and less addiction (lower baud speeds) etc etc - 1 film a day MAX! Ok maybe a bit more on braodband but picking and choosing was good as naturally any human goes out of control with 'all you can eat' entertainment...

    ⏺️ BACK TO TODAY
Blogs becoming the same kind of advert rolls in between text (or is it text in between advert rolls), now each page is almost the same copy and pasted version or setup perfecting what was the SEO search engine with keywords and other tactics so everything now looks the same for anything non-Wikipedia or other than official pages. Now the system is too good and technical availability being taken advantage of at the cost of quality or even genuine interest (it's all just for money isn't it?)

⏺️ SOMEONE ELSE'S COMMENT JUST MENTIONED IN PASSING...
A comment by @GhostOnTheHalfShell / GhostOnTheHalfShell's affirms some of these types of things that happen to a TV series that "slowly was crushed by never increasing commercial schedule, which is to say that the show barely had any content"
    Post: masto.ai/@GhostOnTheHalfShell/

    ⏺️ DISCLAIMER 2:
I admit content being drawn out and advert-filled doesn't mean the quality or worth is always less (#NationalGeographic #Wildlife TV stuff I'm thinking of where you can get tea in between or really do something else and come back to it when it gets interesting again). Even if overall the enjoyment process is changed it doesn't make it instantly crap... And since TV back then, the downloading of episodes (TV had unavoidable adverts back then)... which was solved temporarily until streaming came along and it's like being back on TV but via internet with it's tracking engines and more!

    but anyway....

⏺️ OVERALL yes the feeling is that *feeding* #habits also becomes too much, too pure, too watered down or whatever too much... too much is bad, too much is too much... whoever is supplying it and we have to say no / I need less / I have to moderate it to only *this* part of my life which is hard with 'educational things' especially that turn out to be EVERYTHING!

⏺️ ❓ I hope it all amounts to something and we do get #wiser and more #ECOLOGICALLY #practical, more than #capitalist consuming and find ways to trap people to watch adverts or be tracked in our online habits...
