Easily overlooked among end-of-year album releases is this new live record from The Roots, doing the bulk of their DYWM album (as part of its anniversary).
Super solid. It was recorded live shortly after Roy Ayers passing and they include an instrumental tribute + a live version of Proceed 2, which Ayers guested on (and which I've never heard a live version of, I don't think)
The real white whale here is a live Distortion to Static!!! And it's excellent, along with a Rahzel-supported, Dice-featuring "The Lesson" that is slamming.
But we also get live versions of a good number of tunes from Illadelph Half life, including Section and Respond/React.
Great release all around. Not a lot of contenders for "best live hip hop album ever" but this is a strong contender.

#HipHop folks -- there's a new #Raekwon album out today.
Halfway through and it's really solid so far. Lots of different folks handling production, from big names (Justice League, Swizz) to less-known, but seems pretty cohesive.
Features from much of a good chunk of the Wu, Griselda (Conway, Westside, Benny), and Nas.
Definitely a priority listen.

I love Giddens and like how diverse her musical perspective is, but it's really nice to hear her playing here, doubly so as she's with one of her early musical partners. They're so comfortable together.
The whole set feels like a homecoming in the speakers, an afternoon with friends. And of course the music itself is just like a big warm hug of the best sort.

Listening to this Annahstasia record and WOW. Was on my to-listen list based on what I'd heard so far, saw it got BNM'd on Pitchfork and so thought I'd throw it on this morning.
Superb, YES, more of this please.
Quieter, almost folk-ish record with some strikingly sparse passages. Her voice is just beautiful --- I'm having trouble thinking of a 'sounds like X' reference. (Almost a bit of Tracy Chapman?)
Working with folks who work with #MosesSumney, #CassandraJenkins, and that comes through here in a good way.
Beautiful performance from #Obongjayar.
Again, her voice!!!

The first half of "Immigrant Song" by #Deerhoof might be the most accessible thing they've ever done, and it's kind of a bop.
And then it descends into several minutes of straight noise-chaos, amazing.

Only just getting around to checking out the recent solo debut album from Yukimi (of #LittleDragon).
It's great -- which is not surprising! -- but I was really thrilled to see that all but two tracks include collaboration with Lianne La Havas.
Almost all tracks include La Havas as a co-lyricist; several include composition credits for her, and two or three have her on guitar or a feature in some way.
New #LianneLaHavas is *always* welcome!

#TodaysListening includes this recent release from Sam Gendel and Nate Mercereau, "digi-squires," which finds the two doing what they do best: playing at the boundaries of the acoustic and electronic, making sounds from their saxophone and guitar that often sound very unlike a saxophone or guitar, lol.
I don't try to keep up 100% with either of these excellent artists,, as both are prolific, but this one is keeping me very intrigued. At times it borders on ambient, other times settles into something like a groove, like the song linked below.
The album cover suggests something medieval/baroque -- and it's fitting here, somehow.

New #Destroyer record was pretty good on first (and second) listen but my surprise lp of the week might be this new #ButcherBrown record, Letters from the Atlantic.
They're mining that downtempo/silky deep house vibe -- #TallBlackGuy comes to mind. They can be a bit hit or miss for me but I'm going to be playing this for a while.
