  1. RE: hachyderm.io/@davidculley/1172

Winter is coming. Toddlers will freeze to death. Rain will flood tents and soak/destroy all personal belongings.

Palestinians need to buy warm clothing, ideally ahead of time. They need to replace tents. At the prices dictated by genocide-profiteers.

Over the coming months, Palestinians will need our support the most. Don't grow tired of supporting, don't grow indifferent to suffering, don't give in to feelings of powerlessness. If you need a break, that's okay, but do come back from your break.

If you don't have money to donate, you can send them words of emotional support. Listen to their stories and sorrows. It matters, more than you know.

  4. RE: mastodon.social/@dennishorn/11

Genau das, was Dennis hier schreibt. Firmen setzen Open Source ein. Firmen verdienen Milliarden.

  13. How to Write a Donor Thank You Letter That Retains Donors

How often do you really read a thank you letter you receive? Do you open it gladly, looking forward to the good feeling that comes when you’re thanked? Or is it just a tax receipt to go in your files? That thank you letter really ought to be more than a tax receipt. But while the receipt is needed, it ought to be wrapped in the kind of gratitude and affirmation that makes the reader stop and smile.

  21. 【Brazil Re-Elects Lula for Historic Fourth Term, Bolsonaro Refuses to Concede】

    https://time.com/article/2026/10/26/brazil-lula-bolsonaro-presidential-election-trump/

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been re-elected to a historic fourth term as Brazil’s President after a tight race with far-right opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President and Donald Trump ally Jair Bolsonaro.Lula won with 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court announced. Sunday’s vote was a rematch after neither reached an outright majority in the first round on Oct. 4. Lula had trailed then, becoming now the first presidential candidate since Brazil’s return to democracy in 1985 to finish second in the initial vote and win the run-off.
While Lula is hardly the super-leftist the media makes him out to be, his opponent Flavio is an obvious Trump puppet who would outright hand Brazil to the US, so this is a definite win for Brazil. Though we can't be complacent--it's very clear that the US has been willing to take by force what it can't take through deception.

  22. Early 3D adventure games on 80s tech: The Freescape games

As I look more into old computer gaming, everything that turns up from the British computer market seems to just be the coolest thing I've ever seen. Many are probably familiar with Elite, which was already revolutionary with its early 3D spacetrader gameplay. But one British company, Incentive Software, released a string of fully 3D, first person adventure puzzle games in the late 80s, for both 8-bit and 16-bit computers, and I don't know how I hadn't heard of it sooner.

It was done using their specially-made "Freescape" engine, one of the earliest examples of such in the field, and a name proudly flaunted on the box of each game. There were 6 such Freescape games released between 1987 and 1990, each made of rooms filled with simple 3D shapes and interactive puzzles, and they're all quite a trip to play.

Here are some screencaps of the third and fourth, "Total Eclipse" from 1988, and its 1989 sequel "Sphinx Jinx". Chosen simply just because you're an archaeologist in the 1930s exploring a pyramid to stop a pharaoh's curse, and I love temples and deserts.

You're equipped with a pistol and a constantly-draining bottle of water (and in the 16-bit versions, a flashlight as well), and your health is represented by a heartbeat-ometer. You have to face mummies, illusory rooms, and a limited amount of total keys, so multiple playthroughs and mapping the pyramid out on paper are required to find the correct path.

Because the IBM PCs hadn't caught on in the UK as much as they had in the US at this time, the DOS versions of these games was on par with the 8-bit ports, limited to only 16-color EGA graphics. So, for completion's sake, I got an Amiga emulator running to experience the game for a second time.

The sequel, Sphinx Jinx, was only available bundled with the first as part of a "Special Pack" that was only released for the 8-bit computers, and never saw the PC, Atari ST, or Amiga. So, I set up a Commodore 64 emulator, too.

However, it runs pretty damn slowly, and it's supposed to be the hardest of all the Freescape games, so it's a bit of a slough. Luckily, ScummVM recently added support for all the Freescape releases, so they all can be ran natively with higher resolution and WASD+mouse controls.

For a lot more information and screenshots of each Freescape game, here's a set of great blog posts: https://hg101.kontek.net/freescape/freescape.htm

This auto-generates the full list. I've added this to the docs, replacing the old list. It should be more intuitive now, finding what Chromebooks are supported.

Generative AI has only been around a few years, there's no way actual are actually reliant on it. If one more 25+ year old describes how they can't function without it, I'll scream. What did you do in school for 12 years?

For the record I did terribly in school and barely paid attention. But I can write an email or summarise a document without any help. These are basic skills we're talking about.
