The open source software produced in #highered is a "by-project" [by-product] of their primary work (research, teaching and learning, academic/administrative computing); the #OpenSource software produced by companies--and many "projects" waiting for investors--is a "product."
The sustainability, support, and contributor models (and motivations) are thus all different... very different.

I am struck by how outside the "norm" education-derived #opensource projects are, related to funding.
Everyone so far has a commercial orientation, aligned with typical corporate business and revenue models. As such they are emphasizing investors, customers, start-ups, etc.
Also of note is a, perhaps European, emphasis on goverment funding.
I don't think the education sector and the #OSS institutions that produce it, can take advantage of these approaches.

I've been following and supporting #smArtHistory (https://smarthistory.org/) for years.
The project is the premier resource for Art History in education, run and created by dedicated faculty cultivating understanding across cultures though art.
The project is also an EXCELLENT example of how an #OER initiative can succeed, true to the values of openness, access, and equity.

I suppose my frustration with, and disdain for, faculty and institutions promoting #AdobeExpress #AdobeCreativeSuite, #GoogleEducation, #GoogleSites, #GoogleClassoom, #GoogleDocs, #MicrosoftEDU, #MSWindows, #iPads, #Chromebooks, etc., etc., etc., is such enthusiastic #edtech engaement (well-meaning as it is) ultimately serves corporate interests--creating lifelong and locked-in customers--rather than education or their schools.

And... after being told by the Apple Genius that the power port was corroded and even the wireless chargeing would not work, and "the only option" was to buy a new one," it turns out charging through the iPad keyboard does charge the old iPad.
So in fact the only option was not buying a new iPad.
