In the mean time, the FSF made a clear statement on the Onlyoffice – EuroOffice case: https://u.fsf.org/4b2
Indeed, one can not add arbitrary terms to the (A)GPL and claim that ones software is under that license. If an added term represents a "further restriction", anyone is allowed to remove that restriction.
(A)GPL licenses are made to preserve software freedom, not for actors to use them for open washing, claiming to be open yource while trying to take a way freedoms from users at the same time.

A fluff view of current tech we need to compost
You know, when people are heading over a cliff, I'm more than happy to be "left behind". This story is #openwashing, not innovation. “New European social network” is actually a fork of #Bluesky wrapped in sovereignty language, as Elena Rossini says with the same #dotcons logic - PR-first launch (Davos), reality comes later (or never). This tech mess illustrates, if people start with branding, funding, and media narrative instead of community and process, it’s not #openweb - it’s […]https://hamishcampbell.com/a-fluff-view-of-current-tech-we-need-to-compost/

Damn Israel and damn the war a thousand times! All the aid that entered was cigarettes 🚬, and hospitals and clinics lack medicine and disinfectants, as well as basic food supplies. If it had entered, prices would have decreased. 😡😡😡😡😡
This is their policy of genocide in all its forms; a state of evil and terrorism.

Do you remember the surprise announcement of a new social network in Davos this past January? Something that promised to be the "first" European social network?
Its name is #WSocial and it's a fork of #Bluesky. Its founders have ties with European politicians - but there is no official involvement by the EU.
You wouldn't know any of this from media reports because they all rehashed their talking points. So I wrote a post about it, dispelling some myths:

It didn't take very long...
Special thanks to @mactunag for giving me a heads-up about Bluesky's message on X from November 2025

What I find particularly egregious is that Bluesky already had a custom feed builder: #Graze was an independent project that had proved to be super popular. They had raised a million dollars just last year! They even sponsored the AtmosphereConf last week. Then Bluesky PBC steamrolled over them and announced their own project - Attie - powered by AI... at AtmosphereConf (the event where Graze was listed as a major sponsor - you can't make this up).
A developer for ATProto was horrified by this, writing:
"Why would anyone fund an Atmosphere project if Bluesky, with $100 million in the bank, might ship a competing feature at any moment? Why would a founder bet their career on this ecosystem? The presentation didn't just hurt Graze. It made the entire ecosystem look unfundable."

I am getting A LOT of heat for pointing out shady behaviors by Bluesky PBC. Even from Fedi friends. But I think it's important to be wide-eyed and consider all this mounting evidence of problematic behavior.

This product looks really cool. Too bad it's *not open source*. They claim they will distribute the design files under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, NC stands for noncommercial, so it's not open source. The design is also patented, which (AFAIK) means it's illegal to make this printer without their permission.
I would have much preferred CERN-OHL-S, which explicitly gives you patent rights.

"Open" LLM models are almost never Open Source.
They are "Open Weights." This means the company allows you to run the model, but you have no right to see how it was made or what data it was trained on.
We need to stop letting companies redefine "Open Source" to mean "available for download." Words have meanings.
If a company claims they are open source but plans to "someday" release the code, or hides the training data, they are a poser. This is "Open Washing." They are co-opting the term to earn the community's goodwill for marketing without actually respecting the four freedoms.

@kdnyhan @mike
Yes. I called this #openwashing because it used the halo of openness or transparency to block regulations that would protect the environment and climate. (Medical studies on the harms of airborne pollution could not fully open their data, for reasons of medical privacy.) Here are the #OATP items I tagged with that sort of openwashing during the first #Trump administration.
https://tagteam.harvard.edu/hubs/oatp/item_search?q=(%23oa.trump+OR+%23oa.epa)+AND+%23oa.trumpBut note that #Project2025 calls for both (1) this older kind of #EPA openwashing and (2) direct, unembargoed #OpenAccess (or #PublicAccess) to EPA-funded research, echoing the Biden-era #NelsonMemo. See p 439: "Add teeth to long-standing executive orders, memoranda, recommendations, and other policies to require that EPA regulations are based on transparent, reproducible science as well as that the data and publications resulting from taxpayer-funded activities are made immediately available to the public."

I'm starting a #Mastodon thread on the new #Trump administration's actions and positions on #OpenAccess to research.
I posted frequently about the actions of his first administration. But I did it on #Twitter / #X, which I no longer use.
Also see my separate Mastodon thread on outside efforts to capture and preserve research and data that the admin has taken down or might take down.

>Like I don't know what the fuck lawmakers are smoking honestly. If you take a copyrighted work and digest it through a neural network that (makes it) a derivative work. Are lawmakers actually considering allowing theft(*)? The micros(ha)ft-sponsored Open Source Initiative (#OSI) are #openwashing the theft, so its not as crazy a question as it sounds. thankfully there are people documenting the crime^ albeit with soft language.
People who resist have also liked Digital Feudalism Counter Action firewall for linux (#iptables).
* theft perpetrated by their state-sponsored corporate sponsors (yes is circular). Aside from the theft of intellectual property from the internet, all "ai" systems are served by the corporate state right now. That's goog, micros(ha)ft, scamazon, clodflare, falsebook, I've not seen a SINGLE one that isn't designed to invade a person's privacy on behalf of the digital slavers. Every time u use an "ai" system u are giving the #corporateState irrevocable power and control over u, your thought processes, and all the people u love and who love u.... well done
^ Why ‘open’ AI systems are actually closed, and why this matters (D.Widder et al, 5 December 2024)

It might be time for a broad (and thoughtful) conversation on the limits of openness, in the #OpenEcosystem? How do #OpenGovernment and #OpenData work within the #FreeSoftware framework? Do #OERs run the risk of promoting #fauxpen and #OpenWashing?

If anyone has a working scraper for "Open Archive" PDF content on the ScienceDirect platform, please let me know.
The PDFs there are only 'open' to humans doing clicks in web browsers. Security seems to have beefed-up a lot since I last did my scrapes! ☹️
