  16. YES YES YES, Thank you @ow2

    I had a fantastic time and met soooo many folks working in and with open source to support academic and research institutions.

    was a great opportunity to introduce Apereo and for us to engage with the European community.

  18. Another interesting point is that the system outsources the bad stuff to individual humans because they have no way to communicate back to the system that things are bad. This brings me back to the discussion of funding open source maintenance at #OW2con. Software engineers in general are burned out because we have to do jobs that require maintenance work but are not allowed to do maintenance work on company time because of the short-sighted quarter-at-a-time planning horizon of business

  19. 📢We were happy to participate in this year's #OW2con and especially excited to support it as gold sponsors. It was great showcasing our integration with Pristy, developed by @jeci, which ensures secure document collaboration with a user-friendly, modern interface.

    OW2 is dedicated to creating new technology and fostering a vibrant community and business ecosystem. Sharing the same mission, we look forward to continuing our collaboration.

  20. Great to see all the @Apereo folks (Sakai UniTime, Xerte and the "Apereo office") at @ow2's .

    I hope next year we can grow both participation with the , , folks and project/community representation.

  21. Got some maintainers excited at #OW2con with my talk about reducing maintainer burnout by writing down how your project handles contributions!

    This is the argument I wanted to make in my LWN article on a contributions and credit policy but my editor was too chicken to let me say that. :) Slides here:

  22. I'm surprised how many commentors in the debate are emphasizing donations, government grants, corporate sponsorship, investments, etc. but no one has discissed the importance (necessity) of positioning the project/foundation to accept funds, i.e. the internal work and artifacts that coveys to potential supporters the project/foundation is worthy of a contribution.

    How do funders know the project/foundation is legitimate, reputable, and can be trusted to spend money responsibly?

    @ow2

  23. The open source software produced in is a "by-project" [by-product] of their primary work (research, teaching and learning, academic/administrative computing); the software produced by companies--and many "projects" waiting for investors--is a "product."

    The sustainability, support, and contributor models (and motivations) are thus all different... very different.

    @ow2

  24. I am struck by how outside the "norm" education-derived projects are, related to funding.

    Everyone so far has a commercial orientation, aligned with typical corporate business and revenue models. As such they are emphasizing investors, customers, start-ups, etc.

    Also of note is a, perhaps European, emphasis on goverment funding.

    I don't think the education sector and the institutions that produce it, can take advantage of these approaches.

    @ow2
