I grew up smack dab in the middle of Boston and Providence, so I was able to get 95.5 WBRU loud and clear, which at the time, was THE station for cool and alternative music (until it went to complete shit around 1998).
I distinctly remember listening to (and taping) this Pumpkins concert on the radio the night it aired, and am beyond pumped there’s a vinyl representation of it.
Recorded at the height of Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, it’s a great setlist with the perfect blend of that album and the hits from Siamese Dream, with a few extra surprises, including three songs with Cheap Trick.

I didn’t give this album a chance until well after I’d gotten deeply into Tom Waits and his lore. It’s crazy how big of a hit “Chuck E.’s in Love” was with this sassy “little girl” laying down hipster jive with the best of them. “Easy Money” would’ve fit on Nighthawks at the Diner. “Danny’s All-Star Joint” is fun as hell. Here comes Rickie with the girdle on tight!

1974 Canada pressingAnother one I unearthed from the boxes in my basement, and another I forgot I had.
A glam rock record from Bowie’s guitarist in The Spiders From Mars, with orchestral arrangements; mixed with originals, covers and instrumentals. It’s the same lush sounding arrangements deployed on the early 70s Bowie albums.
The true gem here is “Only After Dark”, Ronson’s best known song about evening behaviours and desires.
There’s also a cool Bruce Springsteen cover of “Growing Up And I’m Fine”, a very obscure choice at the time by a then little-known artist from New Jersey.Fun record.

David Johansen: Here Comes the Night (Blue Sky FZ 36589, 1981)
Back to alpha order after the brief diversion for RSD. Found this in the dollar bin and it’s a little weird that this is his only solo album I have on #vinyl, but I couldn’t pass it up. Features Blondie Chaplin on guitar/vocals and the Modern Lovers’ Ernie Brooks on bass. Not quite as 1981 as you might expect.

This is a compilation of live tracks from 1979-80 and two studio tracks from the Stay Hungry sessions that were completed by the classic lineup for this release. This is one of my favorite releases from the band.

A great soundtrack to a very weird movie.
As a songwriter myself, I adore Paul Williams.
As a kid, it started with “Rainbow Connection”, but as I got into my teens, I discovered this batshit fucking movie that not only STARS Paul, but was scored by him as well. The film sent me into a deep dive of Paul’s songwriting, and exposed me to just how brilliant he is.It’s a very odd movie, and so are the songs, and not everybody is a fan. I can’t explain why it made such an impression on me as a teenager, or why it’s stayed with me all these years, but it’s essentially MY Rocky Horror Picture Show.
But I fully understand why people hate it. 😂
I’m just not one of those people.
