  8. My Book Release at the Curious Crow Company

The official book release party and reading for my new book The Unnamed: A Collection of Short Stories from the Greenland Diaries is this Sunday (the 25th) from 3pm – 4pm at the Curious Crow.

If you haven’t been to the Curious Crow before, it is an awesome establishment. I have done multiple events there through the last few years and I’ve loved their venue and business. There are geeky things to buy, a bar, and an enduring whimsy atmosphere.

You can learn more about the Curious Crow right here

The book I’ll be reading from is brand new. The Unnamed: A Collection of Stories from the Greenland Diaries. It is a large collection of short stories from a variety of eras in this apocalyptic storyline. Some happened before the Drum. Others during it. Some directly after. Then a few decades later. It is a diverse group of stories.

I’ve always been fascinated by monsters, and as a writer I’ve always wanted to look at them long term. This collection of short stories really explores how they might live, survive, and consolidate their trauma far into time. It is absolutely worth the $15 to be along for this ride.

So on Sunday October 22nd from 3 – 4 pm you can find me at the Curious Crow Company reading my work and selling my books. It is an awesome place, with booze and snacks a plenty.

Again, you learn more about them right here.

    Hope to see you then!

  10. 🚨 PoC published for a critical unauthenticated Fortinet FortiSIEM remote code execution vulnerability; CVE-2026-106173

    PoC: github.com/horizon3ai/CVE-2026

The flaw affects FortiSIEM's gRPC QueryResultReq handler. Improper validation of attacker-controlled metadata allows path traversal and arbitrary file writes, which can be chained into remote code execution by overwriting files that are later executed by the system.

    CVSS: 9.4 Critical
Affected: FortiSIEM 7.0.0 through 7.5.0 across multiple release branches
Fixed: FortiSIEM 7.5.1 or 7.6.0 and later

The PoC targets the exposed gRPC service on TCP/27918 and demonstrates blind command execution through the arbitrary file-write chain.

  21. You are not alone

The following text is a copy of one I wrote up over at the OnTableTop forums. But I feel like more people need to read and talk about it. So please feel free to add your comments here, there over in the fediverse.

In the last few days I have seen an influx of people in my immediate (virtual) surrounding that are (in one way or another) fighting the Black Dog. I’m not going to name names here even if one or to where very public about it but there is no point in doing so.

I feel that with all the “festive stuff” (Christmas decorations, candy and crap in stores) coming earlier and earlier, people burn out much more quicker. Especially if the Christmas days are not days to them that brings them joy. And there is multiple ways of how Christmas can not be fun to one person. Maybe they are alone and all by themselves? Maybe they are financially in a bad spot and are not able to buy presents for loved ones or even some kind of special food. And for some it’s the first Christmas without a parent that has deceased in the last 10 months.

There are multiple reasons of why someone might really not enjoy Christmas and all the forced happiness. And all of them are valid.

So if you feel overwhelmed and alone and depressed please know: you’re not alone. Reach out to people in your community, look for others in a similar mood or call emergency numbers if it gets too bad.

I’ve been on record for having had bad times a few years back and sometime it still growls in the background. But thanks to friends, family and just talking about it, it stays in the back room.

And if you’re in need of some more help, look for people like https://metality.org/ A German heavy metal registered non-profit organisation that is building a network to catch everyone. They also have the slogan “you are not alone”. I’m pretty sure there are more organisations around the world that can help. So I ask you, the reader, to put down here links and addresses to such organisations that are local to your country. That way we can curate a list that hopefully has one entry for every OTTer.

Again: you’re not alone. And remember: when you’re up to your neck in shit, don’t hang your head!

  22. Governance Attack Surface Review: Spark Liquidity Layer

Target Protocol: Spark Liquidity Layer (TVL: $2739.3M)

Spark Liquidity Layer – Governance Attack‑Surface Review

    Date: 24 Oct 2026

Prepared by: [Your Name], Senior DeFi Security Researcher & Smart‑Contract Auditor

Scope: Technical review of the on‑chain governance architecture (including tokenomics, voting, timelock, upgradeability, and cross‑chain interaction) of the Spark Liquidity Layer (SLL) – a high‑value liquidity‑routing protocol with ≈ $2.74 B TVL across Ethereum L1 and multiple L2 roll‑ups.

    1. Executive Summary

The Spark Liquidity Layer (SLL) is a permissionless, composable liquidity‑aggregation protocol that relies on a token‑governed DAO to manage fee parameters, pool incentives, contract upgrades, and cross‑chain bridge configurations. The DAO’s power is concentrated in the SPARK governance token (≈ 150 M supply) and a 2‑step timelock (48 h delay) that executes approved proposals via an Upgradeable Proxy pattern.

Our attack‑surface review focused on the governance stack (token, voting, proposal lifecycle, timelock, upgradeability, and cross‑chain messaging) and its interaction with the core liquidity contracts. The analysis identified nine distinct attack vectors, ranging from low‑complexity voting‑power accumulation to high‑impact upgrade‑proxy hijacking.

Overall, the governance system presents a moderate‑to‑high risk profile: Risk Score = 7 / 10. The most critical issues stem from insufficient quorum enforcement, unrestricted delegate call execution, and cross‑chain bridge governance coupling. Mitigations exist but require immediate implementation and rigorous testing.

    2. Identified Attack Vectors

#VectorDescriptionPotential ImpactLikelihood*Current Mitigations1Concentrated Token Ownership & Delegation Loophole> 30 % of SPARK supply is held by a single entity (the “Founders’ Vault”). Delegation contracts allow unlimited delegation without a cap on voting power per address.Ability to push any proposal through with < 20 % quorum, potentially upgrading contracts or draining fees.High (ownership is public)Timelock delay, but no secondary safeguard.2Insufficient Quorum & Early‑Execution VulnerabilityQuorum is set at 15 % of total supply, and proposals become executable after 48 h regardless of whether the quorum is still met.An attacker can front‑run a proposal, meet quorum, then sell delegated tokens before execution, leaving the proposal still executable.Medium‑HighTimelock only; no “snapshot‑at‑execution” check.3Unrestricted execute(address, bytes) on TimelockThe timelock’s execute function permits arbitrary target contracts and calldata, including calls to delegatecall.Malicious upgrade of core contracts, arbitrary token minting, or re‑entrancy into liquidity pools.MediumOnly timelock delay; no role‑based restriction on target contracts.4Upgradeable Proxy Admin OwnershipProxy admin is a single‑key EOA (the “Governor”) that can call upgradeToAndCall. No multi‑sig or DAO‑controlled admin.Direct upgrade to malicious implementation, bypassing DAO voting entirely.High (single point of failure)None – admin is hard‑coded.5Cross‑Chain Bridge Governance CouplingBridge parameters (e.g., L2 fee caps) are governed by the same DAO. Bridge contracts accept governance‑signed messages from L1 without additional verification. An attacker who compromises L1 governance can lock or release assets on L2, causing massive liquidity loss.MediumTimelock delay, but no L2‑specific safety checks.6Flash‑Loan‑Based Vote‑BuyingNo anti‑flash‑loan guard on token balance snapshots. An attacker can borrow a large amount of SPARK, delegate, vote, and return the loan before the proposal execution.Temporary quorum attainment for malicious proposals.MediumNone.7Proposal Spam & Gas‑DoSProposal creation cost is limited to a flat 0.5 % of TVL in fees, which is low relative to TVL. Attackers can flood the DAO with low‑value proposals, clogging the queue and raising gas costs for honest participants.Governance paralysis, increased transaction costs, potential for “censorship” attacks.MediumFee schedule; no rate‑limiting.8Insufficient Event Logging for Critical State ChangesCertain state changes (e.g., fee parameter updates) are emitted only via internal events that are not indexed by major explorers.Difficulty in on‑chain monitoring, delayed detection of malicious upgrades.LowNone.9Re‑entrancy via onERC1155Received Hooks in Liquidity PoolsLiquidity pools accept ERC‑1155 tokens (representing LP shares) and call external contracts on receipt. No re‑entrancy guard on the pool’s deposit/withdraw functions. An attacker could craft a malicious ERC‑1155 that re‑enters the pool during a governance‑triggered fee redistribution, siphoning funds.Low‑MediumUses OpenZeppelin’s ReentrancyGuard on most functions, but not on ERC‑1155 hooks.

*Likelihood is assessed qualitatively based on public data, code review, and known attack precedents.

    3. Prioritized Technical Recommendations

PriorityRecommendationRationaleImplementation SketchCritical (P1)Migrate Proxy Admin to a DAO‑controlled Multi‑Sig (≥3‑of‑5)Removes single‑key upgrade authority, aligning upgrade path with governance decisions.Deploy a new ProxyAdmin contract owned by a Gnosis Safe (or similar) with the DAO as the sole executor. Transfer ownership via changeAdmin.Critical (P1)Add “Snapshot‑At‑Execution” Quorum CheckPrevents front‑running after quorum is met and tokens are sold.Extend timelock execute to read the voting snapshot stored at proposal creation and reject execution if current voting power < required quorum.High (P2)Cap Delegated Voting Power per Address (e.g., 5 % of total supply)Limits concentration of voting power and mitigates token‑whale dominance.Modify delegation contract to enforce a per‑address cap; add a governance‑controlled parameter to adjust the cap.High (P2)Restrict Timelock execute to a whitelist of approved target contractsPrevents arbitrary delegatecalls that could upgrade core contracts without DAO oversight.Introduce a targetWhitelist mapping in the timelock; only allow execution if target ∈ whitelist. Governance can add/remove entries via a dedicated proposal.High (P2)Introduce Flash‑Loan Guard on Voting SnapshotsStops temporary vote‑buying via flash loans.Record the block number of each snapshot; reject votes from addresses whose balance changed within the last N blocks (e.g., 10).Medium (P3)Raise Governance Quorum to ≥ 25 %Increases the cost of collusion and reduces risk of low‑participation attacks.Update the DAO’s quorum parameter; enforce via the same snapshot‑at‑execution check.Medium (P3)Increase Proposal Creation Fee to ≥ 1 % of TVL (or a fixed $10k minimum)Discourages spam proposals and raises the economic barrier for DoS attacks.Add a fee‑validation step in the proposal‑creation function; fee sent to a burn address or DAO treasury.Medium (P3)Add Explicit Event Emission for All Governance‑Sensitive State ChangesImproves on‑chain observability and enables third‑party monitoring bots.Emit FeeParametersUpdated, BridgeConfigChanged, etc., with full parameter payloads.Low (P4)Apply nonReentrant Guard to ERC‑1155 Hooks in Liquidity PoolsEliminates a niche re‑entrancy vector without affecting performance.Wrap onERC1155Received and onERC1155BatchReceived with OpenZeppelin’s ReentrancyGuard.Low (P4)Separate Bridge Governance from Core DAOReduces blast‑radius if L1 governance is compromised.Deploy a dedicated “Bridge DAO” with its own timelock (e.g., 72 h) and a subset of voting power; require cross‑DAO approval for critical bridge actions.

    Implementation Timeline (Suggested)

WeekMilestone1‑2Deploy Multi‑Sig ProxyAdmin; transfer admin rights.2‑3Add snapshot‑at‑execution check & quorum increase.3‑4Deploy updated delegation contract with voting‑power caps.4‑5Introduce timelock target whitelist and flash‑loan guard.5‑6Adjust proposal fee schedule and emit new events.6‑8Conduct a full governance‑upgrade rehearsal on a testnet (e.g., Sepolia + Arbitrum Sepolia).8‑10Deploy Bridge‑DAO separation (if deemed necessary).OngoingContinuous monitoring, bug‑bounty integration, and community education.

    4. Risk Score

DimensionScore (1‑10)CommentsGovernance Token Concentration8Large holder + unlimited delegation creates a “single‑point‑of‑failure”.Upgradeability & Timelock Controls7Admin key is single‑sig; timelock permits arbitrary calls.Cross‑Chain Bridge Coupling6Bridge parameters governed by same DAO; no L2‑specific safety.Economic Attack Vectors (Flash‑Loan, Spam)5Low barriers to vote‑buying and proposal spam.Overall Composite Risk7 / 10Moderate‑to‑high risk; mitigations can reduce to ≤ 4 with timely execution.

Scoring methodology follows the standard DeFi risk matrix (Impact × Likelihood, normalized to 1‑10).

    5. Conclusion

The Spark Liquidity Layer’s governance framework is functional but exposes a sizable attack surface due to centralized token holdings, unrestricted upgrade pathways, and insufficient quorum enforcement. While the protocol’s core liquidity contracts are relatively well‑engineered, the governance layer is the weakest link and could be leveraged to compromise the entire $2.7 B TVL.

By migrating upgrade authority to a DAO‑controlled multi‑sig, hardening the timelock execution path, capping delegated voting power, and raising quorum and proposal‑creation costs, the protocol can significantly lower its risk profile (target composite score ≤ 4). These changes are technically straightforward, have minimal impact on user experience, and align with best practices observed in leading DeFi projects (e.g., MakerDAO, Aave, Uniswap).

We recommend immediate execution of the Critical (P1) recommendations followed by a staged rollout of the remaining mitigations. A post‑implementation audit should be performed to verify that the governance attack surface has been reduced to an acceptable level before any further TVL growth or L2 expansion.

Prepared for the Spark Liquidity Layer DAO. All findings are based on publicly available contracts (Etherscan, Sourcify) and the latest audited source code (v2.3.1, 2026‑09‑15). The reviewer remains available for a walkthrough, Q&A session, or deeper code‑level audit upon request.

  24. I do not like the recent push for investment in & deployment of US "tactical" nuclear weapons given the senile fool in the white house who has said "nobody could have known" that Iran would retaliate to his & Israel's attacks by closing the strait of Hormuz etc, despite the fact that it had been known to be the likely outcome long before his presidency.

Giving someone that erratic & irrational a "reasonable" way to escalate to a nuclear exchange is incredibly dangerous. He's already threatened their use on multiple occasions, and does not understand or care about the consequences of such an action. He's even indicated a nuclear strike against LA would be a small and worthwhile price to pay for his corruption in the middle east, at the same time that Israeli defense personnel like Beni Sabti has indicated that the US may need to suffer another 911 to be reminded of who our allies really are. I'll add that this 2nd war over fake WMDs is to defend a country who ALREADY HAS NUKES (Israel)

  25. Aaron Rodgers on making more NFL History from Dublin to Paris with the Steelers: “Well, we talked about it. I remember at the last CBA, there was talk about doing something like an international week where every team played out of the country. We're getting close to that, I think, because obviously London has a lot of games, and last year we had a great experience out in Ireland—a lot of fun, a lot of fun. But it's nice to be a part of the first game here in France. There was a game in Spain, Brazil, Mexico, and Germany. So I think there could be 16 sites around the world at some point: Canada, Mexico, probably another South American country, and multiple European countries. There was a game in Australia this year, so the league has a pretty far reach. If there's more coin to be made, you know they're going to look into it.” #Steelers #NFL

  26. Capcom Confirms Data Breach Affecting Nearly 11.8 Million CAPCOM ID Records

Another week, another company announcing a huge data breach that may have resulted in your personal data being spewed across the Internet.

This time, it’s Capcom. The company has announced a substantial data breach effecting 11,774,247 Capcom ID records containing account creation date/time, last login date/time, number of logins, and the IP address used for the last login.

    Advertisements

Note, that is “records” and not 11,774,247 accounts. Accounts can have multiple records tied to them, and Capcom does not make it clearly how many actual accounts and people were effected, which is frustrating.

An account is someone’s Capcom ID login. A record is an entry in a database containing information.

What we do know is that 43 of those records also contained “additional personal information: including things like date of birth, gender, country/region and nickname.

196 accounts within the total number have had unauthorised password changes.

Given the information Capcom is supplying, though, it does seem highly likely that each “record” can be attributed to an individual account. If true, that does mean nearly 12 million accounts have been affected.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oncaa_fMsyw&t=1s

Capcom’s notice also only specifies that the information was accessed, but not specifically say it if was stolen.

According to Capcom, they detected suspicious activity on October 19 and confirmed that it was not authorised. They began blocking it and implementing emergecy protocols. By October 20, they had established an incidence response headquarters, confirmed customer information had been accessed and managed to identify the unauthorised password changes. On October 21, Capcom report the incident to Osaka Prefectural Police and Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commision.

Capcom says services remain online and its games can still be played. They say they will reach out to effected customers, and their only warning it so be wary of Emails or messages impersonating Capcom.

Capcom ID is basically the company’s online account used for any online play, so like Street Fighter 6 if you want to go fight online, whereas something like Pragmata doesn’t require it.

  27. Marjorie's
Starters: £3-£7.5; Smaller Plates: £13-£15; Larger Plates: £17-£29; Wines from £46

A wine bar tucked around the corner of Carnaby Street. The restaurant is narrow, and although they have a few tables for small groups, many of the tables are larger and are seating multiple parties. It was a bit of a surprise when we got seated downstairs at a large round table, with space for 8 people. When we arrived, 6 other diners (all couples) were enjoying their meals.

Because it is a wine bar, the wines are on the expensive side. We picked a lovely claret for just under £50 to go with our meal.

To start we ordered some bread, and brown butter, and a saucisson with some cournichons, and a slice of the squash tart. The tart looked almost like a slice of pizza, but had nice sweet squash flavoured layers interspersed with cream and cheese, on a slightly crunchy base.

For my main, I picked the Mackerel, with pumpkin, pickles, and herbs. The combination was a little on the sour side for me, but the fish was well cooked and prepared. My wife chose the Bavette steak which was served with an egg york emulsion — a similar idea to the egg yolk that often sits atop a steak tartare. It was well seasoned, but slightly under for the medium that she'd ordered.

Curiously, we did have to ask for the bread and saucisson a few times, and these only arrived after our mains were served. This was disappointing, but overall the meal, and the ambience were both lovely. There was definitely more legroom than at the Barbary.

  28. FairShare — Making Shared Living Simpler 🤝💰
    What I Built
FairShare is a shared-living expense management application built for friends, roommates, and people living together in hostels, PGs, apartments, or shared rooms.

The idea came from a simple problem: when multiple people share expenses, it becomes annoying to remember who paid, who owes whom, how much everyone owes, and how to settle everything fairly.

    FairShare follows a simple flow:

    Record → Split → Track → Settle

    Users can:

    Create and join shared groups
    Record group expenses
Split expenses equally or using custom amounts
    Track individual balances
    View settlement suggestions
    Record and complete settlements
Ask questions about their group using natural language through the AI assistant
The AI assistant makes the experience even simpler. Instead of navigating through multiple screens, users can say things like:

"I paid ₹1000 for both of us for lunch."

FairShare understands the request and records the expense while keeping the actual financial calculations and validation inside the backend.

The project was built around the idea of making everyday shared expenses less complicated for the people you live with.

The most important part of the architecture is the separation between AI interpretation and application logic.

    The flow is:

User → React → Spring Boot → Gemma → Structured Intent → Validation → Domain Service → Database

Gemma is responsible for understanding what the user is asking for and converting natural-language requests into structured intents.

    For example:

"I paid ₹1000 for both of us for lunch."

The AI can identify the intent as creating an expense, identify the description and participants, and extract the monetary amount.

However, the AI does not directly access the database or perform critical financial operations.

The Spring Boot backend remains responsible for:

    Authentication and authorization
    Group membership validation
    Expense validation
    Participant validation
    Monetary conversion and precision
    Expense calculations
    Balance calculations
    Settlement calculations
    Database operations
Money is stored as integer paise to avoid floating-point precision problems.

This means the AI acts as an interface for the application rather than becoming the source of truth for financial data.

    Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation made it possible to build the AI layer around a model that can run locally instead of making the core functionality dependent on a closed external AI API.

FairShare uses Gemma 3 4B through Ollama, allowing the AI assistant to run locally on the developer's machine.

This was particularly useful for experimenting with natural-language expense commands while maintaining control over how the model interacts with the application.

The most important lesson was that an AI model does not need to control the application's business logic to be useful.

Gemma understands the user's intent, while the deterministic backend decides whether that intent is valid and performs the actual operation.

This architecture provides a clear boundary:

    AI interprets.

    Backend validates.

    Domain services calculate.

    Database stores.

Using an open-weight model also made local experimentation and development possible without requiring every AI interaction to depend on a remote proprietary API.

    My Agent Session
The project was developed with AI-assisted coding and debugging, including using GitHub Copilot Agent to implement, test, and refine parts of the application.

    Prize Categories
    🟢 Gemma
FairShare is entering the Gemma category.

The project uses Gemma 3 4B, running locally through Ollama, as the open-weight model powering the FairShare Assistant.

Gemma is integrated into the actual application workflow rather than being used as a standalone chatbot.

It interprets natural-language requests such as:

"I paid ₹1000 for both of us for lunch."

and produces structured information that the Spring Boot backend validates before performing the requested operation.

The backend remains authoritative for financial calculations, authorization, and database changes.

    Technical Highlights
    🔐 Authentication
FairShare uses JWT-based authentication with protected backend endpoints and group-level membership checks.

    👥 Groups
Users can create and join groups using secure join codes and manage their shared-living expenses within those groups.

    💰 Expense Splitting
Expenses support equal and custom splits.

Equal splits are calculated deterministically, including handling remainder paise so that the participant amounts always add up exactly to the original expense.

    📊 Balances
Balances are calculated from actual payments, amounts owed, and completed settlements.

    🤝 Settlements
FairShare generates deterministic settlement suggestions so group members can see how outstanding balances can be settled.

    🤖 AI Assistant
The AI assistant allows users to interact with their group's expenses using natural language while keeping AI-generated actions behind backend validation.

    What I Learned
The biggest lesson from building FairShare was that integrating AI into an application is not just about calling an LLM.

The difficult part is deciding where the AI should and should not have authority.

For financial operations, I wanted the model to understand the user's request but never become responsible for the final calculation.

This led to a design where:

Gemma understands the request → Spring Boot validates it → deterministic services execute it.

Building the project also helped me understand how authentication, database design, REST APIs, DTOs, validation, exception handling, deterministic financial calculations, and local AI inference can work together as one application.

    What's Next
FairShare currently focuses on the core shared-living expense workflow.

Future improvements could include deploying the application, adding richer spending analytics, improving the AI assistant, and expanding the experience based on feedback from actual users.

  29. By Applied Arts School of Thu Dau Mot/ Thanh Le Studio, A Landscape of North Vietnam, ca. 1950s, lacquer on wood, 91 x 170 cm, photo: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, December 2020. #art #arthistory #vietnam #asianart

From Sotheby’s: “One of Asia's oldest artistic traditions, lacquer is an improbably medium for modern painting, as working with the material is labor intensive and expensive. The resinous material is caustic and is usually applied in multiple layers as it hardens into a highly polished, protective coating for bowls, boxes or other objects. In Vietnam, lacquer had for centuries the practical purpose of weatherproofing wooden statues and parts of temples. The 20th century marked a turning point which saw Vietnamese lacquer art rise to the height of aesthetic expression, as artist would transform the medium from functional style to poetic articulation. Training in lacquer was mandatory at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine, and artists with a high level of sophistication with this material experimented and reinvented a centuries-old art form, just as the impressionists in France had done with paint. The height of Vietnamese lacquer art shows a masterful synthesis of French and Vietnamese approaches to painting, depicting picturesque scenes of the landscapes, villages and families of Vietnam.”

"The recent PHP vulnerabilities are yet another example of independent co-discovery by multiple researchers," Art said. "Co-discovery has always been a (frequently underestimated) concern, but the capabilities of current frontier models increase the chances of co-discovery."

As AI speeds up vulnerability discovery, Art notes this "leads us to reconsider the risk reduction value of long coordinated vulnerability disclosure embargoes and adds additional pressure to already stressed vulnerability management processes."
