  1. Nature's Sculptures

    The wind near sea shore is relentless, peeling away layer upon layer of rock, giving shape and form the most beautiful sculptures.

  3. I’ve been thinking lately about how since very young we are tuned to learn rules, do this, do that. We spend our whole life listening to those older, wiser, opinionated folks sharing with us what you should be or not be doing.

    As a parent myself, I sometimes regurgitate the same type of remarks I used to hear. My oldest, getting close to his teens called me out a few days ago: “Dad, that is great advice for 20 years ago. Today, you can read and be online on your phone. Things are different!” He is right. Things have changed drastically. A whole new generation of thinkers, creatives, rule breakers are growing up. Learn with them. Listen to them. If we all did what our elders did, we would still all be in caves.

    Anyway, I’m proud that my kid is able to communicate his thoughts so eloquently and I’m proud of him.

  7. It's things like this that made me let go of Netflix. Spinning off a show in an attempt to lure yet another side line story is diluted attention. If I have 30-40 minutes to watch something together with my wife, I sure won't waste it on a spin off.

  8. Some weird phenomenon where lights pointing up in the sky are causing UFO beams. It is not foggy by any measure, but it is very cold -20C so the air humidity is frozen into particles and causes this. Apparently!

  9. So, Google is flexing to create the largest e-waste problem. In name of security (aka, force people to upgrade to new phones and trash a perfectly working device), Google is blocking anyone using custom ROMs on their smartphones, even if these ROMs bring latest OS and security patches, long abandoned by the original manufacturer. Apps refuse to work if the device is not seen as “certified” on the Play Store. Apps refuse to work if they are sideloaded. So that leaves you with a device that can run Android, but you can’t use apps that depend on Google Services. Things like push notifications, payments, banking, gone. GrapheneOS has called them out for this move. There is a way to manually add your device to Google Play devices and then you need to use Aurora Store instead of Play Store to install restricted apps. But for how long will this work?

    Time to port postmarketOS and Linux to my Hisense A9.

  12. TIL that audio/video encoders and decoders licenses are a PITA. If you create an app that uses a file format, you must pay the license per install if the format is proprietary. This cost is usually passed on to you, the consumer of a streaming service. I get that proprietary codecs may have come with significant R&D and offer value due to their network or compute minimal impact. That is why we use them. We often confuse open-source with free software, but they are not the same. You can have open-source and still pay for a service that is built on top of said open-source.

    Flathub, elementaryOS are moving towards building a pay the developer model. If successful, we should see Linux adoption for services increase.

  19. I've modded my Thinkpad T495 by installing an NVME on the WWAN M.2 2248 slot. I used an M.2 2230 nvme WD Black SN770M + an 2230 to 2248 adapter. It is rare and difficult to get 2248 nvme's, but due to Steam Deck, it is now easy to get 2230 nvme drives. I have now 2TB, 1 TB on the 2280 slot, 1 TB on the 2248 slot.

    For Linux to detect it, I had to boot with these kernel params:
    "pcie_aspm=off nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0"

    I also now have upgraded the factory nvme firmware following this guide: community.wd.com/t/firmware-up

    Here is the link to download the latest firmware: wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/w

    It's not the fastest drive, but I'll take it over having an external USB powered solution.

  24. Been three weeks coffee free. First week was hard, but now I can feel the difference. I don't feel tired anymore after lunch, or afternoon. In the evening, I feel it's time to go sleep (around 11pm). I wake up without alarm at 6h30 and not sluggish. I found my circadian rhythm!!!
