I'm greatly a reader and writer. I'm also aging, and suffer dry eye/MGD, which make extended readng increasingly difficult. I don't expect this trend to reverse, though one can hope.
As reading gets progressively limited, I know I shall have to segue to audio sources to the extent they are available, and to the extent i can effectively and ethically (e.g. without feeding rapacious LLMs and gratuitously supporting big data centers) convert text to audio.
Meanwhile, I need to take more frequent and probably longer breaks. Unfortunately, physical exercise, e.g. walks in the woods, has grown far more difficult than it was a year ago. In this regard, I can hope for recovery over the next year, as I recover from medical treatments. Still, I will have to read less. Will this mean no more book projects? I haven't decided; that work, however, has been on hiatus. How about reading to learn, and reading for pleasure? reconnecting with old friends, written ones? This is important to me. How about going through the books, and the files, I inherited from my mentor Creighton Schwan? Many I've not yet cracked, even though he trusted me as his intellectual heir. Challenges. And i know, based on other surprises, that visual changes could hit suddenly. If this happens, I could painfully regret having punted these questions.

  12. 2/3 So I mentally created a secret third thing and called it 'hobby treated seriously.'

    For this, I:
    - Protect my writing time like a pro
    - Take writing retreats with my buddy
    - Invest in tools (like Scrivener)
    - Take days off work to write
    - It’s not a job, but it’s not just a pastime either

Do you have a hobby that demands this level of commitment?

The Trump-era Graham was another — a shape-shifting opportunistic politician barely recognizable to the first."

  23. "Lindsey Graham was an unprincipled man who betrayed his country for power and his decency for attention. He knew exactly what Donald Trump was from the very beginning, and chose him over his country. He chose Trump over his duty. He chose Trump over his oath. Now Lindsey Graham is dead, and Trump is his rotten legacy. The high court of history will pass a brutal judgement about a man who knew better, but chose worse":

Cancel EVERYTHING, put TVs and screens out EVERYWHERE, and let every human age 0 to 110 not only watch the entire game but enjoy a respectable recovery. #priorities 😄
