The answer to how to prep a #burner #android phone for #China
is mostly:

1. Start with a factory reset Android phone
2. Create a new Gmail account (only add contacts and emergency contacts you need)
3. Install only a few new things on it; WeChat, Alipay, Didi, Amap, Dianqing
4. Install a VPN; NordVPN (use the obfuscated servers)
5. Update and download all the things, security updates, Google Translate language
6. Put your physical SIM in it, disable roaming
7. Buy an eSIM for data, budget 1.5GB of data per day in China (I'm going for Nomad)
8. Set up as much as you can, but especially all of the payment things... The only way you can pay for most things are QR codes via WeChat and Alipay so make sure those are setup, if you bank allows a virtual card to be generated use that for this purpose.

Whole process is about 5 hours.

When the trip is done, remove the payment methods and factory reset the device. Don't take your primary phone to China.

PS: what I do for trips to the USA is even more severe. US trips is all the above, minus Chinese apps, plus Signal, plus an offline copy of the whole of Wikipedia (time is my canary as to whether they are cloning the device in Secondary security when they take it away from me... So far, no).
