  1. Do laptops with SIM slots present them as smart card devices or are they only available to the modem?

I'm guessing smart cards as there appears to be support for eSIMs.

(Just thinking about WiFi with EAP-SIM)

  2. I've modded my Thinkpad T495 by installing an NVME on the WWAN M.2 2248 slot. I used an M.2 2230 nvme WD Black SN770M + an 2230 to 2248 adapter. It is rare and difficult to get 2248 nvme's, but due to Steam Deck, it is now easy to get 2230 nvme drives. I have now 2TB, 1 TB on the 2280 slot, 1 TB on the 2248 slot.

For Linux to detect it, I had to boot with these kernel params:
    "pcie_aspm=off nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0"

I also now have upgraded the factory nvme firmware following this guide: community.wd.com/t/firmware-up

Here is the link to download the latest firmware: wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/w

It's not the fastest drive, but I'll take it over having an external USB powered solution.

  3. Recent news about the ban of the sale of #Lenovo products with #WWAN support on #Germany due to a dispute on what is #FRAND in #SEPs should work as a wake-up call to the issues.

For too long, we have not been making enough to ensure that Open Standards matter, that Software Patents are wrong, that there is nothing fair on FRAND. And, now more than ever, we are paying the price - with things still moving in the wrong direction.

As it happens, now is also a momentous time, where (in #Europe) we can make a difference. Trilogues around the SEP regulation draft are expected to begin as soon as the new members of the European Parliament are elected.

Voting in the #europeanelections, and choosing wisely whom we want represent us, will be a decisive moment. And, until then we should raise awareness, demonstrate our interest in the issue, as the candidates for their positions on this matter.

    Now is the time.

  4. For etc. under does a/the (e.g. -EB LTE Modem) work without special measures i.e. does it "appear" in the GUI OS e.g. & become available for use automatically on installation or update of nixOS e.g. by running update of configuration in usual way? Are there special options in configuration.nix one has to set first? Even then, does it work? Anyone have LTE success here?

  5. My modem is not found by
    mmcli -L
Which returns 'No modems were found'
Any ideas how to get an recognised (see photo) and working i.e. providing internet when plugged in over ? My configuration.nix already has
modemmanager package installed. Aha.. checking if I have a WWAN card at all.... looks like I need one of these thinkstore24.de/ersatzteile-zu

  6. Hobby update: using my T530, w/16gb ram as a test bed. It has a 512gb ssd, a 480gb ngff in the slot and a 200gb sdxc in the slot. So far on the ssd, I have installed Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7 pro w/VMware capabilities (all for giggles). I’ve also put Arch w/icewm and Slackware on it so far. My next plan is to put Gentoo on the ngff. I have it all setup on and no issues so far. 1/2

  7. ich habs @luebbermann nachgemacht: Der Umbau war tatsächlich recht einfach und die das Modul hat out of the box funktioniert. Zwar nur 3g aber wenn gar nichts anders geht besser als nix.. #wwan #x220
