If you've been following the Donut Labs Solid State battery claims, you may already know they're hard to believe.
With the new test results from independent VTT labs, there is reason to believe it's a fraud and the cell is simply Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) being charged at an extreme 11C rate causing all the heat you would expect from that.

We know these kinds of leaps in #Engineering/ #Technology are rare. We also know they’re likely to become more frequent. And instantly copied. So no one will blame #DonutLabs for protecting a niche until they get off the ground. I’ll leave the sleuthing to others…but I’d start with a patent search -

L’article qui suit est assez superficiel mais il semble que les acteurs majeurs du marché aient des doutes sur la réalité du produit. J’espère que leur batterie existe et tient ses promesses, pour la suite du #VehiculeElectrique. -

Here the Nordic Nano boss seems to be stating that the battery being discussed is not a super capacitor.

The #DonutLabs CEO posted on one Facebook conversation to say that third party tests of their #solidStateBattery will be published in a few weeks.
I still can’t make head or tails of this announcement. There is some speculation it’s a capacitor. I mean, more power to them if it is (kind of weird some say that as criticism), but capacitors have had substantially lower energy density.
Also capacity drain energy quite quickly.

One spec that is curiously different is energy density. In #DonutLabs marketing they state 400Wh/kg. This is a remarkable figure as it would enable battery operated planes. It is significantly better than current batteries. However HBP’s site states their #solidStateBattery at 150Wh/kg. This is in line with current Li-Ion batteries (though their battery has other benefits).

I’ve done some investigation into the big claims by #DonutLabs and their first use of a #solidStateBattery (in the #Verge #EV motorbike). In an old interview on Finnish public broadcaster Yle, #NordicNano (Donut portfolio company) stated to be working with a German ‘innovator’ on a battery. I think I may have found them:

All the specs match what Donut is claiming. We don’t yet know what power output it has and how (likely small scale) production will work.

Donut Labs from Finland announced at CES 2026 a new solid state battery with the following claims;
"400 Wh/kg. Full charge in five minutes. Designed for 100,000 cycles. Lower cost than lithium ion."

Finnish #DonutLabs is promising the first in-production #solidStateBattery and to be used in the #EV motorcycle #Verge. Claims are that this can be done at a smaller cost, with high energy density, with very rapid charge times, safer and with a longer lifespan (100,000 cycles) than existing batteries.
Very big claims. Revolutionary even. We wait and see.
