  7. Paddentrek weer in aantocht

  9. Third batch of Chibi-Primarchs: Vulkan and Curze.

I was undecided whether to give Curze to Vulkan and not to the Lion (Thramas and the like) but firstly it always seemed to me that the Lion didn't really take Curze seriously even when the latter almost parked the Nightfall on his head, and secondly no one else pissed Vulkan off so completely that he lost his mind. This is a solid performance and must earn Konrad the "Vulkan's Nemesis" title.

  10. New #preprint: How well is the Lacey Act doing at protecting the U.S. from imports of #Bsal, an invasive disease decimating #salamander populations? Host species banned in 2016 are being kept out, but trade in amphibians since discovered to be likely hosts continues. From Patrick Connelly, Oliver Stringham, Evan Eskew, and myself.

  11. Very intetesting session of #HonorAndIntrigue #TTRPG on #HotSpringsIsland. The PCs met a pair of double-dealing salamanders who gave them valuable information, but had a few difficult encounters with local wildlife. The cenatur (literally) stepped in a hornet's nest, which let me try out the swarm rules. While this buggy encounter offered surprising challenge to a party who've slain a dragon, they were horrified by the much deadlier swarm of stinging scarab-like insects that attacked at night.

  12. Cracking open a fossil bone reveals rapid juvenile growth in early tetrapods
    phys.org/news/2022-11-fossil-b

It was long thought that these early animals (ancestors of #amphibians, #reptiles, #birds, and #mammals) grew very slowly throughout their lifetime, gradually getting bigger and bigger, similar to a modern #salamander... #Whatcheeria's elevated growth rates as a juvenile shows us that maybe slow and steady growth is not actually the ancestral condition for all #tetrapods.

  22. Herpetologists are calling for greater inclusion of amphibians in African conservation planning, in a recent letter published in the journal Science. The researchers note that amphibians — frogs, salamanders and caecilians — are especially important as early-warning detectors of ecological disruption, given their sensitivity to pathogens, thermal stress, pollution and hydrological changes in their wetland habitats.

  27. 🥾 We hiked past a water impoundment that is usually disruptive to a mountaintop environment, but this one was full of salamanders!

🦎 These amphibians prefer cold, clean, running water as in pristine streams. This pond had to be relatively undisturbed.

📷 I stayed still and got a pic of a Spotted Salamander as it floated into a sunny spot. Love the orange spots!
