My good friends from #ChaoyangTrap have another great piece of communal cultural commentary on China's digital society, out today. This time on #Chinese online #basketball #subcultures and the #toxicmasculinity within one of the big ones, Hupu.

I actually use Chaoyang Trap for #teaching and #lecturing, particularly my week on subcultures in #China. They have an amazing set of articles on #geekdoms, subcultures, and trends in China #ChinaStudies

I guess an #introduction : I research the #geography - #humangeography and #digitalgeography - of #China and am working at Leiden university in #Chinastudies .
I'm currently teaching digital society in contemporary china, china's digital geographies, and strategic communication and china.
I look at things like #migration, #wechat, #food economies, #wanghong (internet celebrity) urbanism, and broader politics of digital social life.
Currently confused by Mastodon :3 I also like #boardgames

#ExploreMastodon #Fieldwork #Fieldnotes Try and chronichle your early Mastodon experiences. Perhaps this is also a diary of #TwitterMigration.
You could do this through posts, screenshots, private fieldnotes, or a diary. Maybe a #psychogeography of Masoton hashtags and #fediverse
Also see the "walkthrough method" -> https://doi.org/10.1177/1461444816675438
Perhaps some collaborative writing on this is possible #collaboration #research #autoethnography

To discuss #InternetCelebrity / #WangHong and #Influencers in China, I also ask the students to read this piee on beauty influencers:
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19392397.2020.1737154
And this piee by myself and two friends on #wanghongurbanism in China which we wrote for #ChaoyangTrap:

Starting "Make-A-#Wanghong Company" (#internetcelebrity) #teaching activity in seminars. The students role play running an #influencer management company in #China and make a strategy document.
One of the readings I ask them to do is, "Historicising Wanghong economy" by Xiaofei Han:
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19392397.2020.1737196
The activity is inspired by Crystal Abidin's teaching and extended to be a multi-week project:

Co-authorship practices: Just about to submit a co-authored paper with two friends, we're examining the idea of 网红城市 wanghong chengshi, or internet celebrity cities, in China. The paper develops the term #wanghong #urbanism (internet celebrity urbanism) and the idea of "urban-digital spectacle" through three case studies. We all did equal work, so what to do about naming order?
We drew the names out of a bag ☺️

Spending too much time making silly #slides for a lecture this week called, #Disinformation #China and #Covid19. It's part of the course, Strategic Communication and China.
I would appreciate any examples of the idea of China being used in #misinformation #disinformation or #strategiccommunication outside of China, i.e. "China virus" narratives, Steve Bannon's show.
