Great advice not only for devs but for early career scientists.
"That means that you can take risks. You can ignore the prior art. You can push further and discover what your tastes are and how you might make better software, and differently shaped software. Use those new powers to build the future, not to another piece of the past."
Too many find a niche early on where they can publish lots of papers and get grants and then never leave or stray too far.

Hey #AcademicFedi I need your opinion on something 🙏
I was recently asked to review on a platform I did not know: https://www.qeios.com
Anyone knows about it? It did not seem too fishy at a glance but their economic model and who is behind it is not entirely clear to me so I'm a bit wary of potential link with people with an agenda (almost got bitten before).
So I'm not sure I want to encourage people to use that can of platform instead of, say, @PeerCommunityIn until I know more about them and the guarantees that all the content will not be lost five years from now...All opinions, feedbacks, or boosts are welcome 🙂

Phew, managed to read through the proofs of an article today. Was a bit tight, only had 15 mins of working time left. It always tends to take longer than expected.

From a recent post looking for PhD theses databases across Europe, I got lots of boosts (thanks) but only returns from very few European countries. So I wonder : how many active scientists (lets say having published one peer-reviewed paper in the last five years) are on mastodon from the different EU countries ?
Pools only have 10 choices, so more countries are in the next post 🙂
please boost mainly on servers with a science theme
And if I have missed any hashtags that are followed by many scientists, please add

RE: https://mstdn.social/@junesim63/115849070993758165
I find appalling that West universities are so silent about this, and many still cooperating with Israeli universities, while schools of arts and humanities like the one I'm doing my PhD fill their mouth of "class struggle, decoloniality and [insert your favourite academic leftwing jargon].

Quick question for the #AcademicFedi: I was recently reminded that I have a #ResearchGate account that I haven't updated in such a long time that I was still supposed to be doing a postdoc in Germany...
So I try to log in, discover that it's using my old German address, switch to the backup address, log in, update the affiliation, and then think "wait, but why am I keeping this"?So I ask you: is there any good reason why I should not delete this account?
Opinion or boosts welcome 😉

Remember the academic dogma: decolonisation, politics, systemic analysis...all are for an intellectual entertainment to produce papers, not to be applied in real life.

Hey academic Fedi,
I'm regularly thinking that it would be useful to have a tool that helps me find articles that cite a paper to contradict (or at least "contrast") its result. It seems that scite [1] does this but they requires a pretty steep subscription given that I'm not sure how reliable their tool is and that they also advertise a chatbot...
[1]: https://scite.ai
Does anyone know of something similar, or a workaround to achieve something similar using standard scientific search engines?
If you don't know, boosts are also appreciated to help the person who might know see this post 😉

Hello #Fediverse @academicchatter
I need your help for a privacy-focused local-host (run offline from my computer) transcription software.I am (luckily?) collecting more interviews than I planned and transcribing manually is becoming a giant task, so it would really be helpful to have an automatic assistance.
Any suggestions?

I'm looking for fellow #scholars , departments or groups from #UniversityOfWarwick
#academicFedi, can you do your magic and help me to find them?
-
And a related question: Do you know of any #UK universities/departments/research centres that have an active presence on the #fediverse?
-
Which #mastodon instance would you recommend to host the institutional account for an interdisciplinary academic department in the UK?
scholar.social would be great, but it's not admitting more users. Other alternatives I've considered: https://sciences.social/ (although not all of us are social scientists), https://h-net.social (not all of us from humanities) or https://datasci.social (not all of us are data scientists)

Now, a different university I worked got very crossed for an illustration of comic-style characters for a recruitment flyer, as they worried about (mis)representation and that they illustration could be offensive (though I had large discussion with the investigators and it was shown to some representative of the community for feedback).
Now in the case of my graphic ethnography, I think an comic-style document is nice

ok, #Illustrators and #Researchers that work with children, I need your advice.
I am preparing some research material for an ethnographic project with children and young people. To make the participant information sheet more accessible, I though of it as an illustrated little booklet for children and/or a comic for teenagers.
Here is my problem:--->

"Trump’s false confidence in the essentialized either/or nature of identity leads him to believe that once he knows what you are, he’ll also know how you’ll think and act.

Acknowledging the existence of multiracial identities completely scrambles this perspective and upsets the stereotypes that Trump holds close to his heart." -
Have to say, the new ASA Career Center is exponentially better than the previous job bank system. No login required to search, nice interface that rivals other job sites, and email alerts that take you straight to the job ad.
Kudos to whoever got this done!

"The real deficit that workers from lower social-class origins suffer in school is not intellectual but cultural: They know less than those from higher class origins about what the pathways to education are and how to make the most of them. Evidence from elite colleges indicates that cultural capital matters more than financial capital in predicting which students will succeed."

Today, I'll be presenting a second paper at #ASEEannual. This paper summarizes lessons shared through The Grainger College of Engineering Lab & Design Community of Practice over the past three years. We hope it will help other instructors teaching undergraduate engineering laboratory courses. Stop by the @asee_nee Technical Session at 1:30 pm in E144 to learn more. If you can't make it check out the details here: https://go.engineering.illinois.edu/CoP24Paper

#Mapping is as frequently used by #researchers as it is polysemic.
For some #academics or #practitioners, mapping is simply identifying actors/concepts, for others is to assign values to variables, and for others, it means to situate something in their geographical coordinates (usually, but not always, accompanied by a visualisation in the form of a #map
What does #mapping mean for you? What's your discipline?

@bryanalexandee There used to be far more of a Web ecosystem surrounding podcasts when they were first popular and my journal article in 2005 was one of the first academic and technical analyses of educational podcasting: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/237544289_Spoken_Internet_to_Go_Popularization_through_Podcasting
The faddish ephemerality is exasperating when there will always be a market for listening, even if limited to drivers, joggers, strap-hanging students and commuters like us in Japan, and so forth. In 2022 I covered some of the changed terrain in https://www.researchgate.net/publication/366399918_Podcasting_Reconsidered#podcasting #podcasts #listening #technology #education #academia #OnlineLearning #OnlineEducation #EducationalTechnology #EdTech #openedtech #OpenEducation #OpenAccess #OER #HigherEducation #HigherEd #AcademicMastodon #AcademicFedi #Japan

Things I didn't realize about the #AcademicJobMarket
17) After a campus visit, don't underestimate the value of... laying around all day in sweatpants.
You might experience a wide range of emotions. You'll have tons of experiences & interactions to process.
But at last, at least for a day, there's no one you have to impress. Revel in it.
Eat comfort food. Watch trash tv. Get yourself a treat. It's part of the process.

Hello #AcademicFedi and #AcademicMastodon
I have a question for you (which might sound a bit provocative, but it's an actual genuine question). What is really the value of Auto-ethnography?
I notice a new trend in some PhD group chat (Humanities) of students resorting to this method for their research. I'm personally puzzled, because beyond some reflexivity, how can a n=1 sample being any representative? Also, isn't it a very individualistic take on research?

Things I didn't realize about the #AcademicJobMarket
13) It's more confusing than I expected to decide how much to share abt your progress. Interviews, rejections, etc.
I'm on the market w/a good friend (see no. 8). We share pretty openly w/ea other.
Beyond close friends, it's trickier. Some people are discreet & respectful. Others are nosy & even judgmental.
You have to figure out your own comfort level.

@mguhlin @Bilingualism @edutooter @linguistics
2/2 Among the limitations are that the English is too much and too difficult for L2 learners in most academic sources, such as journals. When students use automatic translation, they have probably thought about the content in Japanese, but they can paste auto-translated English into papers without fulfilling the language-driven mandate to balance the content-driven approach. I do not believe in content-based EFL as a pretext to mask a language-driven agenda, since the students are enriched by the transferable knowledge they gain in L1 as well as in L2.
Writing reflects thinking, so I discourage writing and speaking that relies on machine translation or AI. The result might be obvious, but we cannot accuse and police students.
How can we promote authenticity in such an age?

@mguhlin In Bilingualism classes in Japan, I can require students to show what they have learned from this class, which is based on reliable research, and to discuss their own experiences in summary, reflection, and response papers. In such ways I can discern how much of students' writing is their own thinking and analyzing. Findings from the discipline of bilingualism are dwarfed by the amount of common misconceptions about bilingualism, which would presumably be reflected in AI databases, from blogs and such sources in Japanese, where students find mostly stereotypical, anecdotal, or prejudiced information for papers, despite my warnings to use reliable sources. I am wondering how applicable this approach could be for other subject matter areas.

@Loukas asked: "Is there some kind of open platform where teachers share lesson plans and resources?" Greetings from Japan, and hope this helps:
At Humanities Commons you can set up a free Profile and site that is principally a blog or a Website - like I have at https://japanned.hcommons.org - and they have a repository called CORE to upload all sorts of publications and deliverables, in categories including "Course material or learning objects" (each assigned a DOI and connected to Google Scholar), an example of which you can see under "Work Shared in CORE" at https://hcommons.org/members/stevemccartyinjapan
In their guide for educators to get started, the first categories they mention are Syllabus and Course Material collections: https://team.hcommons.org/2019/08/20/the-educators-guide-to-humanities-commons
Humanities Commons has a Mastodon instance as well, at https://hcommons.social/home
