  1. A groundbreaking work introducing Civilizational Pragmatism Theory (CPT) — a powerful new framework for understanding Chinese international relations, strategic behavior, and global power dynamics. Dr. Naim Tahir Baig presents a modern paradigm that reshapes how nations interact in a rapidly shifting world.

  2. Mark Harrison on the decline of China Studies in Australian universities

"This success for both commercial international education and China partnerships in the sciences suggests that while Australian Chinese Studies programs have indeed declined, other forms of institutional knowledge of China in universities have actually developed enormously."

  3. China Studies in Australia is in a state of crisis with reduced funding and fearful attitudes. A recently released report mentioned the need to address Australia's "systematic failure" in China expertise

  7. Teaching a new course today - #China #DigitalGeographies - and for lecture one am giving 2nd year #Humanities students a crash course in #humangeography. Happy because I get to fan-boy over #DoreenMassey and re-read A Global Sense of Place 🥹 aughty.org/pdf/global_sense_pl

Next session we consider some of these ideas, and others, from a more digital perspective.

  9. #Wanghong #Urbanism (internet celebrity urbanism): Me and my geographic pals (Amy and Asa) have written a small (5k) piece for the open access Mediapolis Journal on the idea of wanghong urbanism. It's something we've been playing with in our DMs for a while.

    mediapolisjournal.com/2022/11/

We discuss urban-digital spectacles, relevant in relation to recent events maybe.

It was aa nice experience publishing with Mediapolis, you should do it too #China #ChinaStudies #DigitalGeography #HumanGeography

  10. In Copenhagen tomorrow discussing researching #China #ChinaStudies #urban and #digital phenomena and navigating China's #DigitalGeographies

I will reflect on recent and not-so-recent events, and do a Xiaohongshu application walkthrough.

I'm happy to talk, but would also really like to listen to people in #Copenhagen and #Denmark including about #ChinaProtests #A4Revolution

  11. Fun with slides. This week we're discussing #geeks and subcultural scenes in #China by using texts from chaoyang.substack.com/ to explore different #publics, #counterpublics, #cultures, #subcultures, and #affectivepublics. I appreciate when books have malleable and distinctive covers to play with -journal articles need better art (see again, Chaoyang Trap).

  12. After a long discussion about #propaganda #softpower and #communication in China, as well as the difficulties in being a critical #journalist in #China, my students decided they would all choose to publish semi-critical or cultural pieces on sites such as Sixth Tone or The Paper 澎湃 if they were asked. They understand their role in the propaganda machine, but see more benefit in engaging critically even when it supports the machine. I wrongly assumed they'd be more against it #ChinaStudies

  13. My good friends from #ChaoyangTrap have another great piece of communal cultural commentary on China's digital society, out today. This time on #Chinese online #basketball #subcultures and the #toxicmasculinity within one of the big ones, Hupu.

I actually use Chaoyang Trap for #teaching and #lecturing, particularly my week on subcultures in #China. They have an amazing set of articles on #geekdoms, subcultures, and trends in China #ChinaStudies

  14. I guess an #introduction : I research the #geography - #humangeography and #digitalgeography - of #China and am working at Leiden university in #Chinastudies .

I'm currently teaching digital society in contemporary china, china's digital geographies, and strategic communication and china.

I look at things like #migration, #wechat, #food economies, #wanghong (internet celebrity) urbanism, and broader politics of digital social life.

Currently confused by Mastodon :3 I also like #boardgames
