Part of my entry ‘drop’ zone & my living room. I have some beautiful Edwardian beaded purses from my grandmother I will be adding somewhere. They will hold my kn95s, makeup and clear off the tray clutter. I may need to move the propagation thing.
I have a working theory that purposeful, individual, vignette maximalism is how ADHDers need to live to bring less friction & more beauty in their life. It’s been a real solution for me.

PYLONS: Labour warns Plaid’s plan to bury power lines could push up bills
Putting new power lines underground could push up electricity bills, Welsh Labour has warned.
Vikki Howells, Labour MS for Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr and the party’s energy spokesperson, said: “Burying cables can cost five times as much as overhead lines, making electric more expensive and decarbonisation more difficult.”
The Welsh Government wants new lines of up to 132kV buried by default, and two other opposition parties are behind it. Still unanswered: whether the rule would cover the two lines planned down the Towy Valley.
Underground cables should stay an option, says Labour, just not the default
Howells is not against buried cables altogether. Going underground should “absolutely remain available” where the landscape, the environment or other circumstances justify it, she said.
Her objection is to making it the default. She warned: “But a blanket presumption risks increasing the cost of delivering clean energy, damaging the very habitats it is intended to protect and placing additional pressure on agricultural land.”
The Welsh Government accepts that buried cables generally cost more to install and maintain. It says the cost of the network is “ultimately met through utility bills”.
On the plus side, the Government says, buried lines are less exposed to some severe weather and can reduce harm to birds and other wildlife.
For Plaid Cymru, the plan keeps an election promise. Adam Price, Plaid MS for Sir Gaerfyrddin and Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, has said the Government is “delivering on our manifesto commitment to end the use of steel lattice pylons”.
Howells saved her sharpest words for the other parties: “This is yet another issue on which Plaid Cymru, Reform and the Tories are united, putting our economy and environment at grave risk.”
Towy Valley power lines: Reform wants to know if the new rules will apply
Reform UK wants new power lines underground “wherever possible”. Its deputy leader in Wales, Laura Anne Jones, MS for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, said: “Welsh Government must make clear whether its undergrounding policy will apply to projects already in the pipeline.”
She said Green GEN Cymru was pushing ahead with plans for “60 miles of overhead lines” in the valley.
She added: “We’ve visited affected farmers and landowners and seen what this would mean for their livelihoods and the picturesque landscape of that valley that heavily relies on tourism.”
Green GEN has already swapped steel towers for single poles around 22 metres tall on both of its routes. It says burying the lines in full is not economically viable.
Andrew RT Davies backs underground cables to keep ‘eyesores’ off Welsh landscapes
The Welsh Conservatives are on the same side as Reform. Andrew RT Davies, Conservative MS for Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg and shadow minister for farming and the environment, said: “We welcome this consultation and the move towards making underground cables the default for new electricity lines in Wales.”
Wales needed a modern electricity network, he said, “but communities should not have to accept eyesores across our beautiful natural landscapes, which must be conserved”.
The Welsh Government’s consultation on the plan closes on 15 January 2027.

For sale: Spacious, gracious, accessible one-level family home in Haller Lake, Seattle
Do you know anyone who’s in the market for a large, bright, 3+ bedroom 2+ bathroom house in Haller Lake, a very walkable half a mile (0.6m to be exact) from the brand new Pinehurst light rail station? List price $795,000.
A few years ago the owners put in a wheelchair ramp for my use (and because, being sensible, realised that if they were lucky enough to live long enough they might eventually need it too—and in fact they did) plus a huge, ramped deck in the garden, as well as AC so I could visit even during the increasingly frequent summer heatwaves of summer. So we’re talking about a house that would be ideal for families with toddlers still in strollers, for wheelchair users, for a multigenerational family, or for a mixed friend group.
The listing has many fine photos, but, as is usual with these things, it downplays the accessibility features. I understand the commercial reasoning (Eeew, Crip Cooties!) and so had no quarrel with it but as you’re reading this here on my website you’re not scared off by the acknowledgement that humans beings are not all Olympic athletes. You probably also know I tend towards the idea of Universal Design—design that is both beautiful and functional, for everybody—and perhaps you know someone in Seattle who might appreciate that.
There are two entrances:
- The front door, not currently accessible but it could very easily—and seamlessly—be made so: it’s wide, with a single shallow step up to the door, and then a foyer, and then a single step up to the house proper.
- Through the oversized double garage. When I say ‘oversized’ I mean it: there’s room for two cars as well as the ramp.
The garage has a new secure automatic rollup mechanisms fitted. Here’s what it looks like from the outside (there’s room in the driveway to park two or three vehicles, depending on size), and here’s the inside—the purpose-built ramp runs up the left hand side of the garage to a small platform before a lockable door into the house.
Early evening, outsideInside the garage—ramp on leftThe garden is accessible in two ways—along the side of the house; not wheelchair friendly but easy for most people showing up, say, for a party—or through French doors in the primary suite to a deck that was purpose-built with an integrated ramp. It’s beautiful—as is the garden, which goes back a long way from the deck (the lot is close to 7,500 sq ft).
Primary suiteFrench doors to the deckDeck designed around accessibilityThe rest of the house would eventually need some adaptations—proper grab bars in the bathrooms; lowered counters in the kitchen—for full-time occupation by a wheelchair user, but you could move in tomorrow and get all that done gradually. If we didn’t already have a home, we would be seriously thinking about this one. It’s five minutes or less from I-5, Northgate Mall, and UW’s Northwest Hospital, yet the house is very peaceful: set back from the road and surrounded by greenery.
As I say, for the full spiel, go visit the listing at Windermere (preferred—please tell Kate or Amber I sent you), Redfin, or (if you really must) Zillow.
But I can’t resist including here a link to the 3-D tour. Go take a look! Here’s a floorplan to go with it.
If you’re interested, there’ll be several open houses starting tomorrow (or if you want to send your broker sooner than that, today there are two sets of Brokers’ Open House, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, and from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm).
It’s a lovely house where I’ve spent many happy hours. I’d like to think the right people would enjoy it.

Maymont Mansion: Amazing Gilded Age Historic Home
Maymont, a mansion in Richmond, Virginia, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Virginia Landmark. Dating to 1893, the Gilded Age mansion was the lavish home built for James and Sallie May (Maymont) Dooley.
Maymont Mansion in Richmond, Virginia. Photo by Linda Aksomitis.Linda’s Pick of the Exhibits
First of all, the mansion is spectacular! It’s probably one of the most lavish historic buildings I’ve ever visited, including some European palaces and castles. It definitely rivals the Hearst Castle in California.
So, picking a favorite room was tough. However, I have to say it was the dining room that “spoke” the loudest to me in the end.
Why? Probably because the room and place settings do an amazing job of showcasing the lifestyles of the era’s high society.
Formal dining room at Maymont Mansion. Photo by Linda Aksomitis.Of course, the room is filled with paintings and sculptures and ornate furnishings. But it was the place settings that really amazed me.
I was used to the forks, knives, and spoons for each course. What I wasn’t familiar with was the range of glassware.
Place setting in the dining room of the Maymont Mansion. Photo by Linda Aksomitis. It was obvious that each type of glass, like each piece of silverware, was designed for a specific purpose. So this table was set for four different types of wine or sherry or champagne.
What types of glasses were used in late 1800s?Research showed me that I was correct!
- Claret glass: A larger stemmed glass designed for serving Bordeaux red wine (claret).
- Wine hock: A tall, often green or amber, stemmed glass used for German Rhine wines or hock.
- Sherry / Port glass: Often called cordials, these smaller, narrow-bowled stemmed glasses served fortified wines like sherry or port.
- Champagne glass: A glass that was broad, shallow and saucer-like or a tall fluted glass.
- Rummer: A heavy short-stemmed glass used to serve wines, punches, or grog.
- Bohemian glass: A gold-bodied glass with dark, geometric “inserts” or windows known as panels or cabochons used to serve post-dinner liqueurs or cordials.
- Goblet: A general term for formal stemmed glasses.
Hmm, so if I was to guess, I’d say:
- The clear glass on the left was a claret glass. The hosts would have served the Bordeaux red wine in it with first courses.
- The red glass with designs is a wine hock glass. The stem with the two triangular shapes meeting in the middle is described as a waisted hexagon/facet cut. Its deep red bowl is ruby or cranberry glass with detailed gold etching, making the glass late 1800s Victorian Bohemian crystal. Hosts would have served German Rhine wines in it for middle courses.
- The glass with the deeper bowl was a classic British rummer. Hosts would have served a table wine, flip, or mulled punch for last courses.
- The last glass is a cute little Bohemian glass. It would have been used for a final dessert-type drink of a liqueur or cordial.
What’s at the Maymont Mansion?
The Maymont Mansion was a bequest to the city of Richmon from Sallie Dooley, fulfilling her husband’s wishes in 1925. What was in the bequest? One hundred acres to be used as a free park for city residents to enjoy. The mansion and its furnishings.
Eventually, of course, the mansion deteriorated without a cash fund to maintain it. A restoration began, and in 1975 the Maymont Foundation was established to care for the estate that’s still owned by the city. In 2025, the Foundation also did an additional 11.75 million restoration.
Maymont Mansion
The Maymont Mansion is built in a Romanesque Revival style. It has 33 rooms, with a number of the formal rooms included in the house tour. While 33 rooms sounds like the Mansion should be enormous, a number of the rooms are actually quite small. Twelve of the rooms are restored and open to the public.
Sallie Dooley’s room, with its magnificent swan bed, Louis Vuitton trunk and Tiffany dressing table crafted with sterling silver and narwhal tusks. Photo by Linda Aksomitis.Of course, the furnishings are amazing, being all original. In total, Maymont says the bequeathed collection totals 949 objects and the library has 1226 volumes from the Dooley’s library.
Ever dreamt of owning a collection of Tiffany pieces? A Style Weekly article indicated that the Maymont collection is the most complete, intact historic site from the period when Tiffany’s was the country’s most prestigious source of luxury goods!
While the guided tour ends with the formal rooms, visitors also have access to the domestic service rooms.
Butler’s room in the Maymont Mansion with the cast iron bed, simple furnishings and black work suit. Photo by Linda Aksomitis. This area provides an interesting contrast between the lifestyles of the rich and the servants who made their lives easier.
Fast Fact: During the Guilded Age, the employment of an English butler became the ultimate status symbol in the North. In the South, menservants were hired more often than in other regions. However, men made up a small percentage of household workers overall. By 1893, less than 10% of Richmond’s domestic labor force was male. As domestic staff, men received higher wages and served in more visible positions than women. Butlers were valued not only for their skills but also for a polished demeanor.
~ Maymont Mansion signageThe Grounds
The areas near the mansion include historic lawns and gardens, the Carriage House and water tower, and the barn and welcome center.
Highlights include:
- The Japanese Garden with its waterfall, bridge, lanterns and pavilions.
- The Via Florum and Italian Garden walkway of flowers between the terraced garden and the mansion.
- The three-story brick and granite barn that serves as a welcome center.
- The Dooley mausoleum where the couple is buried.
More on the Estate
The park, like the rest of the estate, is a beautiful greenspace. You’ll find:
- Robins Nature Center: A building with nearly 30,000 gallons of aquaria showcasing animals native to the James River and Chesapeake Bay.
- Virginia Wildlife Trail: Outdoor habitats for black bears, bison, a bobcat, deer, foxes, coyotes, porcupines, and raptors.
- Maymont Farm: A children’s farm with hands-on animal encounters.
Fast Fact: Before the Dooleys built the mansion the land had been a rural dairy farm overlooking the James River. The estate added Maymont Farm in 1903.
Linda’s Road Trip Tips
Richmond is an amazing city to visit! I found it friendly, both in terms of talking to local people and in city features such as free buses.
People were quick to help, without being asked, whenever I was confused walking or picking a bus route. Leaving the Amtrak station the staircase to the street is high, and while I was struggling to get my bags down them, a teen sitting on the other side just stood and carried them down for me.
But the gem to me was getting to the Mansion. My Uber had dropped me at the wrong entrance, so I was walking to get to my scheduled tour. I asked various people for help, which was always given. However, when I asked an older resident how far away I was, she simply got her car keys and gave me a ride! Now that’s A++ for a directionally challenged tourist!
I stayed at the very comfortable Omni Richmond Hotel downtown in the historic Shockoe Slip District. It was close, just a short walk, to the Greater Richmond Convention Center. On the way, I walked through the historic Capitol Square.
Bison meatloaf. Photo by Linda Aksomitis. And meals? While I had many tasty ones, the best one was at Southern Railway Taphouse in Shockoe Slip. It’s a restaurant and bar with a patio facing the canal. My dinner? An excellent bison meatloaf. It was served with caramelized shallot gravy, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed green beans. Delicious!
Who Should Visit Maymont Mansion?
Maymont Mansion is an amazing attraction for Gilded Age and architecture fans. With its luxury and opulence preserved for 135+ years, the mansion can’t help but impress even the most well-traveled visitor.
Pin me!Anyone who loves decorative arts or is a Tiffany enthusiast will also find lots of treasures to keep them fascinated. Since visitors see both the elite lifestyle and the worker lifestyle, there are great insights into what separated the classes.
I wouldn’t recommend the mansion for families with small children. Strollers aren’t permitted due to the size of rooms and walkways.
Likewise, due to the historic integrity of the well-preserved home, tours aren’t wheelchair accessible.
However, the Robins Nature Center is fully wheelchair and stroller accessible. The gardens have limited access in some portions.
When it comes to time, I spent an hour-and-a-half going through the mansion. I didn’t, however, go anywhere on the grounds other than the walkway from the parking area.
How Do You Visit Maymont Mansion?
There are three entrances to Maymont Mansion. Access the mansion at the Hampton Street Entrance (1700 Hampton Street), the Robins Nature Center through the Shields Lake Drive Entrance (2201 Shields Lake Drive in Byrd Park), and the Children’s Farm and Wildlife Exhibits at the Spottswood Entrance near the Boulevard Bridge.
Parking: The Hampton Street Entrance and Shields Drive Entrance both have free parking areas.
Street address: 1700 Hampton Street (Maymont Mansion), Richmond, Virginia.
Find hours and days open (typically just Thursday-Sundays) on the Maymont website.
Keep up to date with what’s happening on the Maymont Facebook page.

The Tour de France 2027 !!!
This is a special post on a special race the family on my dear late wife Martine used to followed dearly every year, They are gone now , but we try to continue the tradition and either go to Pau or watch on tv the race, Lately, lucky they have passed near us and allows to see them in person, Next year will be another opportunity! Let me tell you about it now to allow for planning by those afar, and be aware this is a wonderful time to visit my belle France ,Of course, this post will be in my black and white series, no pictures, Therefore, let me make this special post on the fabolous Tour de France 2027 !!! Hope you enjoy it as I,
The route for the 2027 Tour de France has been unveiled. Starting in Great Britain and concluding with the Pyrenees and Montmartre, the 114th edition of the Grande Boucle promises a spectacular show. Spanning 3,479 km (about 2 162 miles) across 21 stages, this 114th Tour will feature a Grand Départ in the United Kingdom. Edinburgh will serve as the 27th overseas starting point and only the third in Great Britain, following London in 2007 and Yorkshire in 2014 marking the northernmost start in the race’s long history. For the first time, Scotland and Wales will appear on the Tour map.
The first stage, from Edinburgh to Carlisle, is expected to favor the sprinters. The second stage, a hilly route, will begin in Keswick, a small town in northwest England that serves as a gateway for hikes in the Lake District National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site, home to stunning landscapes, even served as a filming location for Star Wars: The Force Awakens film. The stage will finish in Liverpool, where the statues of the Beatles unbeknownst to the band members themselves will be adorned with scarves in the colors of the Tour’s iconic jerseys. The third stage, a nod to the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic, will traverse the mining regions of Wales, featuring 3,000 meters of elevation gain before arriving in Cardiff. The route continues with Cherbourg (stage 4) and Pontorson (stage 5, heading toward Plumelec), a journey that effectively retraces the path of William the Conqueror, whose millennium is set to be celebrated. Meanwhile, Angers will return to the Tour map for the first time since 2016, hosting the finish of the sixth stage, which begins in Vannes (my capital city). An occasion to celebrate an anniversary. In 1967, the Tour introduced the first prologue in its history in Angers.
There will be the 38 km (Blois–Chambord; stage 7), 33 km (Toulouse–Toulouse; stage 16) a total of 71 km of individual time trials. Toulouse will host a time trial for the first time: a flat, out-and-back route along the Garonne river, with the exception of the Côte de Pech-David (800m at 12%, reaching 20% at the base). In 2027, the Grande Boucle will visit Sallanches (the finish of stage 10), featuring two ascents of the formidable Côte de Domancy, while the 21st and final stage will depart from Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (Yvelines 78). There will be two mountain stages in the Alps, two in the Pyrenees, one in the Jura, and in a previously unimaginable inclusion one in the Cévennes (Montpellier–Mende; stage 14), boasting 4,300 meters of elevation gain and very steep gradients, set against a backdrop reminiscent of a Western. Stage 18, running from Pau to Saint-Lary-Soulan with over 5,000 meters of elevation gain, will climb the Soulor, the Tourmalet, and the Hourquette d’Ancizan, before reaching the Col du Portet ,the highest point of the Tour, at 2,215 meters. The following day, the 160 km route from Hasparren to Laruns will feature the Basque climbs of Burdincurutcheta and Bagargui. There will be ,also, three passes over the Côte de la Butte (Montmartre) before the finish on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.As usual will give you my favorite stages for the Tour de France 2027 :
Stage 4 Tuesday July 6 Cherbourg-en-Cotentin – Cherbourg-en-Cotentin 171 km
Stage 5 Wednesday July 7 Pontorson – Plumelec 178 km
Stage 6 Thursday July 8 Vannes – Angers 193 km (will try to be here)
Stage 7 Friday July 9 Blois – Chambord 38 km ind time trials
Stage 15 Sunday July 18 Rodez – Albi 169 km
Stage 16 Tuesday July 20 (is my Dad bday!) Toulouse Toulouse 33 km ind time trial (will try to be here)
Stage 17 Wednesday July 21 Muret – Pau 186 km
Stage 19 Thursday July 23 Hasparren- Laruns 160 km
Stage 21 Sunday July 25 Saint Quentin en Yvelines -Paris Avenue des Champs Elysées 116 km
The official Tour de France 2027 route : https://www.letour.fr/en/overall-route

"Experts alarmed by ‘less transparent’ CDC as US measles deaths rise"
"The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added a third measles death to its dashboard on Wednesday, but the agency would not reveal whether the death occurred in Pennsylvania or another state – which is “notable” as the agency delays reporting other measles deaths, experts say."
"The CDC cited privacy laws in not sharing the name of the state, but experts say there are no privacy concerns in doing so – and this information is important for the public to have as the outbreak continues accelerating, growing by 8% in one week to 4,410 confirmed cases so far this year, nearly double last year’s count."
