  3. Haven't been able to do as many movies lately but I've done a few, enough for a #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday this week. Worldbreaker I saw a week or two ago, it got criticism but it wasn't bad. Little Brother was hilarious, and I'm now over half done with Evil Dead Burn, I've had to watch it in pieces. Tons of gore, so nasty and gross. Great camera work, too. Digging it.

  7. I'm a sucker for Crispin Glover. I might have to rewatch A Cure For Wellness at some point because I was just really put off by the lead actor, which is totally a Me thing.

  9. Here we go! I very rarely give out a one star but I really didn’t love Over Your Dead Body. It was 100% different to what I was expecting and not in a good way!

I’m a proud member of the Quaid Army and really wanted to love it for Jorma Taccone.

  10. Happy #LetterboxdFriday ! My #LastFourWatched made for a good week:

Manhunter - 4/5, re-watched the original, waiting to see the Final Cut

A Man of No Importance - 4/5, peak Albert Finney

American Fiction - 5/5, excellent adaptation of an excellent novel

This Changes Everything - 4/5, irony alert: misogyny in Hollywood but directed by a dude

    Happy viewing!

  14. Interesting movie week!

A Mary Oliver documentary (3.5 stars) - best part: John Waters?! Way too many unrelated celebrities made appearances.
As Above So Below (4 stars) - I really liked this one! Watch it if you like the idea of spooky things happening in the catacombs.
Nightborn (3 stars) - Trigger warning if you've had postpartum depression or psychosis. I had PPD and this brought up a lot of feelings.
Leviticus (3 stars) - I just didn't like it much?

Vive le Cinema! - A segment of this film, to be honest, in which Jeanne Moreau interviews Orson Welles over dinner at the Ritz, Paris. It’s a joyful thing, watching Orson telling tall tales, including how he nearly killed himself aged six to get out of piano lessons, or when a film he was directing had no costumes so he filmed everyone in a sauna, then exploding into laughter like a little boy. Such an entertaining film. On Criterion Channel.

La Condition/The Arrangement - Swann Arlaud is a notaire who gets his maid pregnant. She and his wife form an alliance. Another great performance from Galatea Bellugi.

The Sacrifice - Big-screen 4K revival of Tarkovsky’s magnificent final film.

Private Life - Sub-Baumbach IVF dramedy that has a good performance from Kayli Carter.

    EVE'S BAYOU 🇺🇸

Legally-speaking, you can't comment on this film without using the term 'Southern Gothic'. So... Southern Gothic

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    FLOATING WEEDS 🇯🇵

Ozu doing his Ozu thing. I'm not saying his films are all the same. I'm just saying if you've already seen a couple, you know what to expect. They're good. They're really good. But I never have anything much to say about them

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐

THE END OF THE DAY 🇫🇷

Actors in an actors' retirement home doesn't sound like the most appealing premise for a film, does it? And yet....

Oh, there's an unlikely amorous relationship between a 17 year old (who looks 35) and one of the old men, but in fairness the film is using this device to make a point. And the point is 'ewww', so... OK.

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    ANNA KARENINA 🇬🇧

A Hungarian-born producer hires a dynamic French director to adapt a Russian literary classic and it still turns out stiffly British. Welcome to the 1940s

  24. @NoRestfortheWicked @MamaLake If you follow the tags #LastFourWatched and #LetterboxdFriday you’ll find some great recommendations.

From this year I’d recommend the French film Nino, Köln 75, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingos, Romería, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Colours of Time, Miroirs No. 3, and The Secret Agent.

Link to a free month of Mubi in my bio, should you want to have a go.
