Ice Cream Man (2026) - slop
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) - it's fine as a sequel but standalone it's meh
Animal Protector (1988) - nonsensical lo-fi swedish action
In the Mouth of Madness (1994) - CINEMA -

Happy #LetterboxdFriday ! My #LastFourWatched for last week:
Eyes Wide Shut - Such an exquisitely-made film for such a boring story
Jazz On a Summer's Day - 4.5/5, beautiful, should have been half an hour longer
Motel Destino - 2.5/5, no likeable characters
The Jericho Mile - 4/5, early Michael Mann and great Peter Strauss performance
Happy viewing!

Only really watched two movies this week -- first I was busy, then I was sleepy. I actually watched most of What Happened to Dorothy Bell? but I slept through the ending so I didn't count it. (What I saw was interesting!) I also fell asleep during Ponyo, but I've seen it so many times that I figure that's okay. Evil Dead Burn was a bit meh in my opinion, and the opposite of Ponyo.

A Most Wanted Man - A rewatch of Anton Corbijn’s excellent slow-cinema Le Carré adaptation. Amazing cast (PSH, Krieps, Dafoe, Rachel MacAdams, Ursina Larbi, Daniel Bruhl, Robin Wright). Slow, tense. The colour yellow is strangely prominent, like a warning running through the film.
Porto of my Childhood - Manoel de Oliviera made this film about childhood memories when he was 93, evoking a world long gone. Scenes in which he talks about shops and cafes of his youth, then shows the modern-day buildings, are particularly moving.
L’Engloutie/The Girl in the Snow - Galatea Bellugi plays a visiting teacher to a remote community in the Alps in 1900. The locals are suspicious of her big-city ways, especially when men start dying… One of those films that could be better, pacing is off, bit flat, but I’ve been thinking about it all week.
Project Hail Mary - I know loads of people loved this but bloody hell it is bad. Gosling pratfalls his way through this like Norman Wisdom in space. I managed an hour before giving up. Stupid dancing stone crab thing didn’t help matters. I hope Sandra Hüller got paid loads of money for doing this nonsense.

HOLIDAY FOR HENRIETTA 🇫🇷
Two squabbling writers try to write a screenplay. We see the film they're coming up with on the fly, with all its detours, revisions and lapses into sensationalism and gratuitous sexy scenes. ('You're an adolescent!). Flirts with genius
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐CHRONICLE OF THE YEARS OF FIRE 🇩🇿
'The French, Hitler, or the Americans? What difference does it make to us?' Three hour epic about the rise of the Algerian independence movement.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE 🇬🇧
(Again). Just about serviceable Hammer sequel. But Christopher Lee wasn't as good as Peter Cushing at disguising his boredom
⭐ ⭐ ⭐
ROCKERS 🇯🇲
A man is trying to make a living selling records when his motorbike gets nicked. The plot is basically an excuse to tour us through the late-70s Jamaican music scene. Would make a perfect double-bill with the better-known The Harder They Come

Yes, the children still have summer holidays.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010): Far from perfect, but well-paced, has a great cast, and made me laugh out loud many times. 3.5/5
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2011): Less episodic than part one but also less funny. 3/5
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012): See part two. 3/5
Work it (2020): Good choreography and likeable characters in an unimaginative, clichéd story. 3/5 (maybe rated too high)
