Braid (3 stars) - Very strange but aesthetically cool.
I Love Boosters (4 stars) - Really fun movie!

All films this week are from Criterion Channel’s amazing Murderous Melodramas season.

The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing - Genuinely great Joan Collins performance as a young actress fought over by a millionaire and a star architect. The story this film is based on is wild.

Niagara - Marilyn is so good in this tense murder flick set at the falls. Jean Peters became Mrs Howard Hughes. Goofy Max Showalter appears to be acting in a different film.

Desert Fury - Lizabeth Scott is at the centre of a storm in this very queer-coded thriller melodrama.

Violent Saturday - Victor Mature caught up in a bank heist! Lee Marvin as a bad motherfucker! Ernest Borgnine as an Amish farmer! You won’t see any of that in The Odyssey next week.

    LULLABY [🇪🇸 ]

Frank, low-key domestic drama about the pressures of motherhood and family dynamics

    ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

    BAD BLACK [🇺🇬 ]

Narratively it's borderline incomprehensible, but held together by a narrator commenting on the film like he's watching It's a Knockout! (Jeux sans frontières) and always entertaining

    ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

    HELVETICA [🇬🇧 ]

If you only see one documentary this year about a popular font, &c...

    ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

    PEKING OPERA BLUES [🇭🇰 ]

    Fast-paced, colourful comedy-action-satire

    ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

    THELMA & LOUISE
First rewatch in ~30 years. So 90s, and so cool. One of the few occasions I find Brad Pitt attractive.

I’VE COME AND I AM GONE
Cute little Turkish short showing a long lost Istanbul from 15 years ago.

    NO GOOD MEN
    Afghan romance/drama through a woman’s lens, literally.

    SENTIMENTAL VALUE
Rewatched because why not. One of the best films of recent times.

  28. Good grief, apparently I only managed to watch one new movie over the last week! The rest of these I've already talked about here.

I Love Boosters gets 4 stars from me; it was very fun! I kind of want to watch Obsession again.

  30. Technically not all this week, because I've been mostly watching The Bear S5,

    1) Revisiting the indestructible dog-person Keanu franchise.

    2) Anna Kendrick's directorial debut, telling the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala from the perspective of several of the women who encountered him, with some fictionalised elements, which sometimes work and sometimes fall short. Overall good, and filmed in a way that never becomes voyeuristic or exploitative towards the victims, but leaves a lot of his horrific crimes out.

    3) Short horror film with some cursed-media/Ringu elements, that had potential but used way too much generative slop, even if it's presented as a critique of AI.

    4) Better Man, which Taylor Tomlinson was 1000% right about, and I am joining her on that hill because this film absolutely did *not* deserve to be "one of the biggest box office flops in history". Considering that I've never gone through a boy band phase, nor been a Take That fan, I'm not a fan of most biopics, and never really had any particular interest in Robbie Williams, beyond having a 'tattooed man with dimples' soft spot and thinking that he has made some solid music in his solo career, I had a blast watching it. The chimpanzee gimmick is weird, and original, and somehow works. And the way the "Rock DJ" Regent Street sequence was filmed, with 500 extras on location is *ridiculously* impressive.
