This is not **News** per se, by which I mean this is not a new development. In one form or another, precarious agricultural workers have been take *to the cleaners* over the centuries (from Australia’s colonial past to the present #NeoLiberal #NeoColonialism). Wherever there’s a buck to be made by skipping around laws and regulations, there is sure to be some clever arsehole that comes up with a scheme to vaccum up easy cash. That, is the state our society has come down to and some of the worst perpetrators of this *financial fraud* are #LabourHire companies. They provide nothing that can’t be had by other more equitable schemes and skim the cream off the top for the privilege of screwing workers. ** A pox on all their houses.**
“Australia's growing reliance on temporary migrant labour has fuelled a booming labour hire industry, with contractors sitting between growers and workers, often recruiting, transporting and housing them.” (Source: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-04/australias-hidden-modern-slave-labour-workforce-exposed/106968610 )

President Trump's intensified deportation campaign is targeting agricultural and meatpacking communities, with recent arrests in Milan, Missouri, focusing on workers outside plants—near homes and roads. A 2025 Supreme Court ruling expanded "reasonable suspicion," allowing agents to consider race, language, and location, which critics argue encourages racial profiling. U.S. citizen and Maya descendant José Affholter, detained after questioning agents, described feeling dehumanized by the experience. This enforcement surge threatens immigrant labor forces and raises civil rights concerns, highlighting tensions between immigration policy and community safety. As someone that works outside in high heat, I'm very aware of the dangers of heat stroke. Fortunately, I determine my own safety and preparedness when it comes to protecting myself, but what about businesses that only respond to legislation and threats of fines?
I'm sure it's not only the US that is struggling with this question...
